  • Hungarian Academics Working Abroad: Female and Male Career Paths

    Transnational mobility has not only become an integral part of the successful, internatonally driven career path of academics, but is emerging to a great extent as a major performance requirement. Similarly to academic careers in general, international mobility of researchers is also a gendered process to a great extent. This paper aims to assess the most important characteristics of Hungarian researchers working abroad with special attention put on the similarities and differences identified in the career path of female and male researchers. With an online self-administered questionnaire distributed through a snowball sampling methodology
    among Hungarian PhD-holders working abroad for more than one year, we investigated the motivation for international mobility, the career path, work contracts, work-life balance, future career plans and the perception of the value of the PhD degree. Our key findings indicate that male researchers’s labour market position is more advantageous abroad than female researchers’ and overall they are more convinved of the positive value of their PhD degree, while female academics were statisfied, but at a more moderate level.

  • Foreign students of the medical faculties in Pécs and Debrecen: the choice of the university and acculturation process

    With the headway of globalization and knowledge-based economy, international student mobility is promoted as the main indicator of the internationalization of higher education. In Hungary the number of foreign students – similarly to global trends – shows an increase, representing a significant economic interest. Besides this, the international students make a growing impact
    on the development and the economic and cultural life of the cities where the universities are based. In our empirical research, we analyzed international students at the Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy foreign language programs of the University of Debrecen and the University of Pécs with the help of personally requested anonymous, self-completed questionnaires (n=602). The
    self-developed questionnaire focused on three issues: the motivation of the students, their satisfaction with the university and the process of their integration. The research was conducted in the spring semester of the academic year 2015/2016 at both universities.
    Based on the results it can be stated that from the perspective of medium- and long-term policy development of the university and the city, it is indispensable to survey the motivations and satisfaction of the students arriving to Hungary due to international student mobility as well as to facilitate their integration. The general medicine major of the University of Pécs and
    that of the University of Debrecen are very popular among foreign students but there are significant differences in their choices behind which we can discover the different cultural background of the matriculated students and this factor determines their personal choices and their later plans. Concerning the difficulties at the beginning we can state based on the results that for the
    students of the German programme the different language medium and the local bureaucracy mean a bigger challenge, while for the heterogeneous community of the English programme contact building with the tutors and the integration into the socio-cultural medium mean more difficulties. Concerning the integration we can state that from the point of country of origin the integration means a little less challenge for the more homogenies student community of the German programme than for the heterogeneous community of the English programme behind which most probably the stabilization of the acculturation process can be trailed.

  • Perceptions of families with children and the social professionals working with them on services promoting the well-being and social mobility of families

    In our study, we investigate how families with children living in a disadvantaged sub-region of Northern Hungary, in areas of different settlement size and in settlements belonging to the Budapest agglomeration, perceive the available educational,
    education, childcare, health and social services, whether they have any information about them, and what professionals working with families with children think about the education, childcare, health and social services and services available to them.

  • Polarization and heterogenization of social strata, with the conservation of „the big structure” : Dilemmas on the basis of researches made in the late two decades

    Recently the investigations were focused rather the polarization, so the questions connected
    with the inner structure of the different strata got less interesting, The most important aim of
    our study to give an empirically founded picture about the heterogenity of the different strata,
    and paralelly about the conservation of „the big structure” of the society. The study was based on
    the survey of stratification carried out by The Hugarian Statistical Office, in 2016. Observations
    showed, that the revealing of the attributes of the heterogenity can be solved only by developing
    the different modells and schemes. The key question was, that by the modification of Andorka
    scheme could we gather more punctual informations about the formation of the inequality? Our
    results mirrored, that by the help of the revised schemes we could show bigger inequality, than
    with the originel ones.

  • The Tertiary education plans of disadvantaged secondary grammar school students in Hungary

    My study focuses on tertiary education chances and opportunities of disadvantaged and multiply disadvantaged children and youngsters. The target group of the research consisted of disadvantaged full-time secondary grammar school students who aim to get out of their position and status with the help of further education. Via the interviews I tried to examine the difficult topic of further education from the perspective of the disadvantaged and the multiply disadvantaged students, also aspiring to reveal their notions and fears about the topic. The main goal of my research was to get an insight into the perspective and mentality of disadvantaged and multiply disadvantaged students.

  • The impact of recent migration flows on the number of Hungarians in Transcarpathia, Ukraine

    According to the last Ukrainian census in 2001, 152 thousand people declared Hungarian
    ethnicity in Transcarpathia. Since that time, there is no reliable and up-to-date data on the
    ethno-demographic development of the region’s population. It is especially hard to register the
    migration flows particularly salient since the outbreak of the armed conflict in East Ukraine
    in 2014. Based on four data sources (official Ukrainian and Hungarian statistics and two
    representative surveys), the present study aims at revealing the volume of the permanent and
    temporary migration of Hungarians in Transcarpathia and its impact on their number. We
    found that the same migration flow is associated with various figures by each of the data sources
    conducted with different methods and by different actors. According to the more reliable surveys,
    9 to 14 thousand ethnic Hungarians emigrated from Transcarpathia since 2001; consequently,
    the number of Hungarians is estimated at approximately 130 thousand people in the beginning
    of 2017.

    The study examines the effects of the spatial mobility of the family. The family’s influence in many areas of people’s lives, so the socio-spatial movements. The people in the family will inherit the bulk of their resources, provides for standards, values, skills, behavior patterns of transmission, all have an impact on the social and geographical movement-related efforts and opportunities. A study of rural young people in interviews to examine the family and the relationship between mobility, immobility. The interviewees aged between 19 and 25 have in common is that they have already completed their studies, and their parents live in the same village. An analysis of how these young people are present in the családtörténetében mobility, we are characterized by their family members, relatives, and family resources spatial movement, kötődéseik, what impact does the site less costly.
