  • The Rethinking the public in Higher Education: Communitarian Engagement vs. Service-Based dependency

    There has been structural change in higher education due to the impact of institutions built or maintained in private public partnership. The aim of the paper is to give a deep insight into how these institutions could accomodate or shape the public higher education sector’s discouses, spaces, procedures. The research used mixed method to approach this complex question from a multidisciplinary perspective (sociology, education). Within this framework two residential halls were chosen and 17 interviews were carreid out with all relevant figure of the management. Due to the analytical tools of Maxqda 12 the qualitative results will be presented giving an insight into the differing discourses and practices of the public vs. private-public management. Based on the analysis of the managerial interviews it is safe to state that the public management struggles to balance a communitarian, democratic discourse and objectives with the requirements of efficiency and accountability. The presence of private-public management unintendedly shapes its public counterpart. The institutional analysis revealed that due to the swiftly changing institutional and policy environment residential halls are forced to be efficient leading to difficulties in managerial legitimacy and questions concepts such as community, conformity, commitment and action. Under the circumstances of increasingly growing institutional service-based dependency and control, academic consumers, institutions and students alike, paradoxically avoid integrating into macro groups. As a consequence, the institution encourage and educate student into a particular type of citizenship based on communication and consumerism rather than consensus.

    Maintaining competitiveness is one of the long-term strategic goals for companies. Beside
    tangible and intangible assets, the value of human capital is continuously growing, due to
    changes in the labour market. A loyal, highly skilled employee makes a significant contribution
    to organizational success through competencies, experience, and skills. The career management
    system of multinational companies became more attractive by the possibility of international
    assignments, which is a very complicated process requiring complex planning. This system is
    considered global for several reasons: its transnational nature, international experience gained
    by the employees and the achievable career on a global scale for the individual (as a part of a
    successful process).
    Creating a global career management system thus involves a number of HR functions.
    Emphasis should be placed on finding suitable employees, selecting, onboarding, mentoring, on
    methods and the evaluators in the performance appraisal process, providing feedback on a
    regular basis and in an appropriate manner, achieving and maintaining motivation, developing
    competencies and supporting the balance in mental health.

    Today, researchers and practitioners also interested in the questions of successful leadership of
    organizations as well as efficient and effective change management. In our paper, we combine
    these two areas of research and in the form of a literature review examine what kind of leadership
    style, role, behaviour is needed to successfully convert organizations through change processes.
    We emphasise the behaviour aspects of change implementation. After defining the concepts that
    are most relevant to our topic, we first collect models and research findings from the literature
    on change management, which deal with how to lead changes, and then explore the approaches
    associated with organizational changes from the leadership literature. Finally, we try to draw
    conclusions that according to the research we have studied, what are the characteristics of
    successful change leadership.

    Soft skills development workshops can serve multinational organizations towards the
    improvement of internal communication between employees of various language backgrounds
    attempting to collaborate on tasks and issues in performing their daily activities. Employer and
    management expectations of these workshops may not be consistent with those of employees
    and this gap can lead to employee pushback and even refusal to internalise and utilise the
    envisioned workshop key learning points that management wants them to develop. On the bases
    of years of professional experience as co-trainers holding soft skills development workshops and
    receiving employer and employee feedback on their work at dozens of multinational companies
    in Europe, the authors discuss critical milestones which must be met by management, in order to
    lay the groundwork for more successful soft skills workshops at their organisations.

  • The Earning and cash management characteristics of the roma communities living on the margins of society in Budapest

    In this essay, I aim to explore the income and cash management characteristics of the roma
    communities living on the margins of society in Budapest. In my research, my main focus was the
    way people are living in the segregated streets of “Magdolna district” reacted to the declining
    opportunities after the economical system change. Another question to be answered is what
    strategies these families and households use to provide the sufficient amount of income, and if
    there is any kind of economical or ’life-management’ community function between them beyond
    the segregation.
    After reviewing the job opportunities, I concentrated on the characteristics of the consumption
    structure. I interviewed them about their costs of living as well as the possible ways of reducing
    their expences. I also tried to examine how the cooperation of extended families effect the
    everyday life of the smaller parts of these families.

    How discipline the teachers in the primary schools in Hungary? How should they discipline to
    meet the expectations, values and norms of our society? According to my research, in today’s
    primary schools there are significant differences between discipline and conflict management.
    I analyse the differences and I set the behavior patterns of the teachers into three distinct types.
    These three characters are controlled from traditions, outside and inside. These three types are
    distinctly distinct in everyday life of schools, with different effects on students’ socialization. In
    this paper, I present this hypothetical model, its operation in the dimension of discipline. The
    interviews that underlie the analysis were prepared by village teachers teaching in the Vásárosnamény micro-region.

  • Public administration reforms in Central-Eastern-Europe

    The goal of this paper is in one hand to summarize how public administration reform trends
    have spread in Central-Eastern-Europe since the transition, on the other hand to overview the
    techno-economical paradigms which can determine the near future in the region. To analyse
    spreading and development of New Public Management to Post-NPM doctrines periodization of
    Drechsler and Randma-Liiv (2014) is being used. At the end threads and opportunities related
    to technological development are aimed to be found in relation with public administration and
    governance. Using entrepreneurial state’s concept shows that solving wicked issues needs active
    state’s involvement, which might have a strong effect on public administration’s reform as well.

    Globalisation is a complex and worldwide process overarching historical times and continents.
    It started with the great geographical discoveries, continued with the emergence of world trade
    and the development of a truly global market reaching its present status. Globalisation has both
    negative and positive effects. Out of the positive effects it has to be emphasised that more and
    more zones of our planet benefit from the advances in sciences and techniques, more and more people have better access to work, education and the necessary commodities to meet their basic
    needs. Globalisation has brought efficiency and new opportunities to companies, providing practically free access to raw materials, labour and knowledge. Out of the negative effects degradation of the biosphere, the greater social and economic inequality especially in the developing
    countries has to be pointed out. Some companies are operating worldwide and have acquired
    great economic power and influence. Governments have only limited possibilities to regulate
    their operation. The expenses of profit maximisation are high, which are often ‘paid’ by the social-natural environment (as externalities). The aim of our study is to overview how current
    business relations could be formed to be more human and environment friendly from the point
    of view of Christian philosophy. It has to be pointed out that our study is focusing on the Christian
    point of view, although in our globalised world when studying business relations we should not
    forget about the role of other world major religious groups.

  • Changes in family decision-making and division of labor among weekly families

    The study deals with the transformation of decisions and division of labor within the family by
    processing the results of a qualitative, interviewed study of the target group of weekly workers.
    The study shows how decisions are restructured according to roles within the family and how
    the roles of women and men change as a result of the regular absence of one family member.
    From the point of view of the approach to domestic work, the differences between weekdays and
    weekends, which can be considered as a consequence of weekend, come to the fore. In the course
    of the analysis, we examined whether there was a change in the decision-making processes
    within the family as a result of the weekly (and if so, what areas were affected by the change)
    and whether there was a radical change in the division of family responsibilities as a result of the
    weekend. I present the results on the basis of two dimensions, on the one hand, of the phenomena
    of disposition and decision-making over income, and, on the other hand, of the division of family
    responsibilities and problem-solving.

  • The effect of successfulness on family and friendly relationships

    The study examines the impact of leadership roles and success on family and friendship relationships between men and women. The literature on this topic typically focuses on the analysis of success and failure, but the impact of family and friendships on leadership success is a less published area. The questionnaire data collection (n = 437) was conducted among women and men using a snowball method, with separate questionnaires. The questionnaire data were analysed using ANOVA test and Chi-square test. Research findings suggest that female and male leaders differ in their perceptions of the impact of their own successful leadership roles. Male leaders perceived personal skills, unique ideas, reputation and spousal support as determinants of successful leadership, whereas female respondents did not perceive these factors as being important. More than half of men (51.8%) agreed with the statement that their leadership successes have led them to make new friends instead of old ones. This compares with only 4% of women. Almost half of female leaders (47.1%) believe that they have kept their old friends. Less than half (45.1%) of women feel that leadership has had a positive or negative impact on family and relationships.

    Planning a career cannot be started soon enough. The determination of following a
    career path preceded by significant decisions and aims. Several pieces of research are
    dedicated to the affiliation of young adults self-awareness and career paths in terms of
    seeking work. University students rarely have the appropriate amount of self-knowledge.
    Nowadays in the labour market beside the qualification, competencies are growing in importance. It is crucial to have certain communication, integration and strategic
    skills to successfully find a quality job. The University of Debrecen provides a wide
    variety of available services regarding individual job search support or consultation
    and the commitment of a career path. The surveyed university students valued the
    importance of these services and competencies related to improving the finding of a
    job after graduation. The conformity between the knowledge of the available services
    and the required and existing skills could be helpful in the labour market after getting
    the university degree. The questionnaire was filled out by students from the University
    of Debrecen and valued by the IBM SPSS Statistics programme.

    This study is part of a university programme that has been running for several years. At the University of Debrecen, in the academic year 2000/2001, the then Rector's administration initiated a new talent management programme, which was integrated into the existing forms - TDK, vocational colleges, demonstrator network. The novel features of this programme were the multi-stage assessment of the admission procedure and the different forms of support, in particular the tutoring system (Balogh - Fónai, 2003). Admission to the programme is in three stages, the first of which is a process in which faculties delegate the top fifth of full-time second-year students on the basis of their academic performance.

  • Hungarian Academics Working Abroad: Female and Male Career Paths

    Transnational mobility has not only become an integral part of the successful, internatonally driven career path of academics, but is emerging to a great extent as a major performance requirement. Similarly to academic careers in general, international mobility of researchers is also a gendered process to a great extent. This paper aims to assess the most important characteristics of Hungarian researchers working abroad with special attention put on the similarities and differences identified in the career path of female and male researchers. With an online self-administered questionnaire distributed through a snowball sampling methodology
    among Hungarian PhD-holders working abroad for more than one year, we investigated the motivation for international mobility, the career path, work contracts, work-life balance, future career plans and the perception of the value of the PhD degree. Our key findings indicate that male researchers’s labour market position is more advantageous abroad than female researchers’ and overall they are more convinved of the positive value of their PhD degree, while female academics were statisfied, but at a more moderate level.

  • The 2019 local elections in Szeged

    The 2019 local, municipal election outclasses the second-order elections in the given political constellation. This is especially true in the case of Szeged, where the opposition – unlike the situation at the national level – has the power for a long time. To change this situation, the governing parties, taking advantage of their dominant position – and using all means – conducted a very vigorous campaign, changing the city into a battlefield. According to the results, the governemt’s attempt was not successfull, it was rather contraproductive. The reigning mayor and city management won an unprecedented victory. The root cause of it is a special urban policy which extracted the local politics from the partyfights and overrode party interests, and which represented the interests of the city succesfully and with credibility even against cross-wind. Based on the cooperation of the entire opposition the implemented urban policy is symbolized by and embodied in the person of the mayor in office since 2002.

    Those development approaches that support social inclusion, exploitation of endogenous
    resources and community development may be an alternative, and can offer new opportunities
    for the economically and socially disadvantaged rural areas and for peripheral settlements
    that have missed the mainstream of development. The new rural paradigm, and the related
    regional development approaches, such as marketing-oriented settlement development, point to
    a new community-based trend, where places, local communities get a more important role, the
    function of local management changes and endogenous factors become the main resource. The
    communication activity and positioning practice becomes more important.

  • Leadership challenges in virtual environment: The importance of the synergism in ICT toolset and leadership development

    The companies connected to the global value chain inevitably and necessarily apply virtualized
    solutions in their work organization. As such, the appropriate implementation of the shoring
    strategies, the increasing competition and the supply-demand imbalance on the local market of
    the high-skilled workers, all puts the existing organizational and leadership practices to the test.
    The article aims to highlight the main challenges the virtual team leaders (VTL) are facing and
    some best practices that might widen the toolset of the modern VTL. The results are based on a
    case study of a multinational info-communication technology (ICT) service company in which
    experienced managers and leaders shared their strategies. The main takeaways of the empirical
    research are (i) the emphasis on the “early-adopter” behavior and the proper usage of the latest
    technology in the communication, (ii) the importance of the ability of building trust and setting
    common goals; (iii) despite that everyone is perfectly connected via the internet, the regular
    personal presence is still the most powerful leadership tool.

    Nowadays, numerous new automobiles are being developed by various companies and their
    suppliers around the globe. On account of the reduction of the product’s economic lifetime and
    effects of the global market, n the automotive segments the time factor plays a key role in the
    successful implementation of the project and consequently in the sale of the product. The current
    study, focusing on human conditions, scrutinizes the behaviour of the members engaged in the project. It’s primary focus is not to reveal the hindering factors due to time-losses arising from
    the shortage of resources or inadequate planning. These conspicuous reasons and the demonstration as well as treatment of risk, belong to the scope of the board of project portfolio management, which operates well among larger project organizations. Each project member is taking
    an individual approach towards meeting deadlines, and their motivation about the execution
    of the given tasks also vary. Beyond the results found both in the professional literature as well
    as general research, I study whether the unique features of the actual automotive organizational projects can be identified or not. The ongoing research observes, based on the experience
    acquired from the automobile development project, motivation and adherence to deadlines, the
    composition of the team impacting work efficiency.

  • The effect of Covid-19 epidemic on the industry of a Sub-Saharan Country: a perspective on sports industry in Nigeria

    Kutatásunk során a Covid-19 járvány Nigéria gazdaságára és sportiparára kifejtett hatását elemeztük, a kapcsolódó szakirodalom áttekintésével. Megvizsgáltuk a sportgazdaság Covid-19 járvány alatti helyzetét Európában és az Egyesült Államokban, majd kiemeltük a nigériai speciális viszonyokat. Bár a sportgazdaság nigériai vonatkozásában kevés szakirodalom áll rendelkezésre, több mint 60 tudományos közlemény elemzésére került sor. Ezek alapján megállapításra került, hogy a Covid-19 járvány nemcsak a globális, de a nigériai gazdaságot is negatívan érintette. Ez különösen jelentős volt a sporthoz kapcsolódó direkt és indirekt
    foglalkoztatás területén, tekintettel a nigériai gazdaság egy-szektorú jellegére. Vizsgálataik alapján szerzők javaslatként fogalmazzák meg, hogy figyelembe véve a nigériai társadalom korfáját, jelentős befektetések lennének szükségesek a sportiparba, mely a szektor átalakításával is együtt kellene, hogy járjon.

     

  • Social policy model change in Hungary in the light of post-2010 governance

    Hungarian social policy underwent a major shift in emphasis following the change of government in 2010. The aim of this study is to examine the direction of these changes of emphasis compared to the models used by Esping-Andersen to typify welfare states. The analysis uses the classical criteria of the models and analyses changes in social policy principles, goals and instruments in five areas. In the areas of employment, family policy, tax policy, housing policy and crisis management, we would like to show that in Hungary we cannot currently speak of a purely conservative social policy model as declared by the government. The conclusion of our study is that the Hungarian system currently uses mixed elements, although the declared values are conservative and the authorities try to preserve conservative structures and actors, there is a significant shift in emphasis in social policy, and the mixed model shows strong liberal elements.

  • Parents’ school volunteering in the interpretation of teachers in a disadvantaged region of Hungary

    In the international literature, there are many studies dealing with the voluntary work of parents at school, but there is little research on this in Hungary. In our study, we examine the volunteering of parents through the interpretation of teachers in three disadvantaged counties of Hungary, using a qualitative interview method. The research population was the teachers of primary and secondary schools, and the interviewed teachers were selected by multi-stage, stratified sampling. We included 38 interviews in the analysis, in which the voluntary work of the parents appeared. The interviews were analysed by manual and machine hybrid coding. According to our results, teachers also considered participation on request or under pressure as volunteering. “Real” volunteering is hardly present, and parents are less likely to initiate assistance on their own. Parents are typically occasional volunteers, and mostly the members of the parents’ work community participate in regular volunteer work. According to the teachers, the voluntary work of parents is indispensable in the life of the school, so in our opinion it would be important to promote it and to motivate parents to participate more in school life.
