  • Political development: what, why, how? A comparative framework for Hungarian history

    The essay focuses on the comparative analysis of Hungarian political development before 1989–90. Instead of dealing with the 32 years since the change of regime, the author is interested in how many different interpretations of political development can be identified. The author singles out examples of political development in developed countries (for example the United States) as well as developing countries (those countries which have become decolonized in the 1960s). The starting point of the analysis is that Hungary cannot be described by either the categories used for developed countries or those that are used for developing ones. While the essay recognizes that the measure of progress at all times for Hungarian development is the example of Western development, it does not accept the approach according to which Hungarian development is a “dead-end” because it differs from Western development in many ways. The essay puts forward the hypothesis of the “normality” of Hungarian political development.

    Several international and national organisations are concerned with the aspect of children. This
    essay examines a special group of children and youth who live in fostercare. Their future aspects
    are basically determined by the break away from their families. Even they area way from their
    familiesf or a short or a long time, becoming an adult is a complex process and many factors
    define their lives. Among these factors the environment of the fosterhome and the relationship
    with the biological family is essential. The essay focuses on two fundamental dimensions of
    becoming an adult: familyplanning and working. Although the desires about their future lives
    are quite diverse, the implementation is similarly difficult for each of them. Those who haven’t got the supportive background are hadicapped in many dimensions. In these cases the
    childprotection has a leading role. The essay attempt stogive an insight to these young adults’
    futureplans while it highlights the dimensions of familyplanning and working.

    The new challenges of rural areas support expansion of the range of professional research and
    analysis focusing on local or regional identity structures as a quality factor of development.
    These new approaches are particularly important in the rural areas of the post-socialist
    countries, which are in the initial stages of the recognition of the potential inherent in the
    endogenous development paradigm. In Szeklerland, according to the new rural development
    paradigm, place-based identity could be a potential for the sustainable development. The aim
    of my paper is to present the major dimensions of the place-based identity structure in a microregion of Szeklerland.

  • Reflecions on the society of control – Footnotes to the Delezoguattarian machine

    The present study revolves around the concept of the Deleuzean machine. It undertakes to
    introduce the machine from Deleuze’s concept of the societies of control. Thus this paper is not
    a presentation of the critique of the Freudian and Lacanian notions of desire that the machine
    is introduced as a late capitalist abstract agent, but a genalogy of the machinic mechanism – as
    a logic of operation – is outlined from a new perspective. The emphasis of the study is not on
    psychoanalises and capitalism, and on schizoanalysis as a critique of them, but ont he operational
    logic of the societies of control: the articulation of controlling freedom. Fort he latter, concepcts
    such as territory, de- and reterritorialization, as well as the operating principles of cybernetic systems are shed light on. By examining this concept, therefore, the ways of understanding the
    social, economic and political processes of ourt time can be shed new light.

  • From Sunday lunch to the ballot box: Political socialisation and political homophily in Hungarian society

    Political socialisation is the process of forming an individual’s political identity, in the course of which the individual’s attitude to politics and political worldview is formed. Political socialisation takes place in different spheres, of which the family and parents are of particular importance. Previous research in Hungary has confirmed that the family is an “incubator” of citizenship. However, there is little data available in Hungary that would allow for a more precise understanding of the transmission of political attitudes. This study investigates political homophily within the family (between parent and child) and the effects of parental political characteristics on the individual in Hungary. Our data are drawn from a nationally representative telephone survey of 2000 respondents sampled in 2023. The results show that in nearly two-thirds of Hungarian families, family members held the same political views during the respondent’s childhood, with the highest proportions of homophily indicators, fathers’ and respondents’ voting activity, and mothers’ and respondents’ conservative-liberal attitudes. The effect of parental characteristics was tested using structural equation modelling (SEM). Parents’ political interests and ideological positions had a strong direct effect on the same child characteristics, but the individual’s political participation and party preference were only indirectly influenced by parents. The success of attitudinal transmission was strongly enhanced if the parents were themselves, homophiles, along with the trait in question. Our results point to the important role of the family as a primary agent in political socialisation and suggest new research directions.

  • The situation of Roma education in Harghita county – attitudes of pedagogues

    The study presents the attitudes and behaviours of pedagogues, based on interviews with
    teachers working with Roma children which constitute the quotidian educational practice. In
    absence of institutional programs, infrastructural and personal conditions, the teachers need
    to find solutions for the given difficulties. They become the key figures of the integration process
    and hence their attitudes and approaches are determining from the point of view of Roma
    children’s school efficiency. The target audience of the research are composed by pedagogues,
    who teach in elementary schools in the Csiki Basin in Harghita county, where the rate of Roma
    learners exceeds 25 percents. Signalling the main directions of the national policy and the
    presentation of literature examining the Hungarian-Roma relationship in Szeklerland offer a
    broader framework for the interpretation of the subject.

  • The Gypsy card: Manifestations of the Anti-Gypsism in the Parliamentary speeches

    The present paper aims to investigate the rhetoric of the Hungarian far right about Roma by the Parliamentary speeches of far right politicians. It unfolds the topics, discourses how the MPs of MIÉP and Jobbik talked about Roma. Within these topics it examines the different represen-tations, images of Roma used by far right politicians during those Parliamentary terms during which they entered the Parliament. The paper identifies when and how the far right has talked about Roma and unfolds how the far right rhetoric has contributed to maintaining, reproducing or even strengthening the anti-Roma attitudes in the Hungarian society.

  • Fighting child poverty. Family day care centres in Debrecen

    One of today's biggest challenges, present in every country in the world in some form or another, is child poverty. Vulnerable groups include children of unemployed parents, families with three or more children and single parents (Ferge and Darvas 2012).
    In the EU-27, children and working-age people are at higher risk of poverty and social exclusion than older people. The extent of child poverty is also influenced by the labour market status of parents, the household in which they grow up, and government interventions (Antuofermo and Di Meglio 2012). Since child poverty and the labour market status of parents are inseparable, in my study I also examine employment and unemployment indicators in our country.

  • Structure and communitas: Subcultural problemsolving knowledge in an alternative high school

    The paper describes the relationship between subcultural and school/institutional interpretations
    in the inner discourse of an alternative school (the ’Diákház’) in Budapest. Interpretations and
    practices, that belonging two different interpretive frameworks, appear simultaneously and
    intertwined in the Diákház communication scene. This contributes to problem-solving
    capacities/knowledge that individually do not appear in either of the two. In this discourse, the
    subcultural manifestations of difference, deviance, marginality, resistance or communitas, and
    the manifestations of knowledge, autonomy, responsibility and the hierarchical structure of the
    school sometimes appear in opposition, sometimes in reinforcement to each other. The knowledge
    formed in the discourse can be used by the Diákház to keep (formerly drop-out) students within
    the institution, and by the students to reduce their own feeling of invalidity. In this way, the
    Diákház is able to use the two opposite social states, communitas and structure, to its own
    benefit

    The study examines the effects of the spatial mobility of the family. The family’s influence in many areas of people’s lives, so the socio-spatial movements. The people in the family will inherit the bulk of their resources, provides for standards, values, skills, behavior patterns of transmission, all have an impact on the social and geographical movement-related efforts and opportunities. A study of rural young people in interviews to examine the family and the relationship between mobility, immobility. The interviewees aged between 19 and 25 have in common is that they have already completed their studies, and their parents live in the same village. An analysis of how these young people are present in the családtörténetében mobility, we are characterized by their family members, relatives, and family resources spatial movement, kötődéseik, what impact does the site less costly.
