  • Processes of change in the Hungarian and Ukrainian Community in Izsnyéte, Transcarpathia

    I started my research in Izsnyéte, Transcarpathia, in 2012 with an anthropological research group. Initially, we were curious about the coexistence mechanisms of the local settlement, the cultural peculiarities of the ethnic groups living there, but due to the war situation, we had to stop our empirical research sooner before 2015. In 2017, as a doctoral student, I continued my empirical research in Izsnyéte, where Hungarians represent an absolute majority against the state-forming Ukrainian ethnic group. The basic research concept was to choose a local settlement close to the border where two or three different ethnicities have lived together for decades. In my study, I examine the process of ethnicity production and the processes of image and change of the living ethnicities of the settlement and their applicability to each other in comparison with the data of previous research, reflecting on the changes, mainly in the light of assimilation. Already the results of the 2012 research showed spatial isolation, in many cases dissimilation was experienced among coexisting ethnicities, but with many other factors and aspects several years later, it caused diverse processes.

  • Factor of wage satisfaction in the light of a satisfaction survey

    Present study reports about the survey results of an empirical research reflecting the wage satisfaction level of employees. The part of the empirical research done in 4 different administration bodies in 2019 with the help of an online questionnaire survey is presented, in which results are summarized concerning responses to competitiveness of the wage system, relation of wage and performance, and the satisfaction with wage and further allowances.

  • Foreign students of the medical faculties in Pécs and Debrecen: the choice of the university and acculturation process

    With the headway of globalization and knowledge-based economy, international student mobility is promoted as the main indicator of the internationalization of higher education. In Hungary the number of foreign students – similarly to global trends – shows an increase, representing a significant economic interest. Besides this, the international students make a growing impact
    on the development and the economic and cultural life of the cities where the universities are based. In our empirical research, we analyzed international students at the Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy foreign language programs of the University of Debrecen and the University of Pécs with the help of personally requested anonymous, self-completed questionnaires (n=602). The
    self-developed questionnaire focused on three issues: the motivation of the students, their satisfaction with the university and the process of their integration. The research was conducted in the spring semester of the academic year 2015/2016 at both universities.
    Based on the results it can be stated that from the perspective of medium- and long-term policy development of the university and the city, it is indispensable to survey the motivations and satisfaction of the students arriving to Hungary due to international student mobility as well as to facilitate their integration. The general medicine major of the University of Pécs and
    that of the University of Debrecen are very popular among foreign students but there are significant differences in their choices behind which we can discover the different cultural background of the matriculated students and this factor determines their personal choices and their later plans. Concerning the difficulties at the beginning we can state based on the results that for the
    students of the German programme the different language medium and the local bureaucracy mean a bigger challenge, while for the heterogeneous community of the English programme contact building with the tutors and the integration into the socio-cultural medium mean more difficulties. Concerning the integration we can state that from the point of country of origin the integration means a little less challenge for the more homogenies student community of the German programme than for the heterogeneous community of the English programme behind which most probably the stabilization of the acculturation process can be trailed.

  • A Comparative Study on the Characteristics of Rural Tourism in Transcarpathia and in the Highland

    The article, after a short historical presentation of those Slovakian (the Highland) and Ukrainian
    (Transcarpathia) regions where Hungarians still play a major role in the population, focuses
    on the perspectives of rural tourism development in the mentioned areas. The research was conducted
    in more phases: 1) review of the relevant literature; 2) searching for the eligible hosts;
    3) evaluation of the questionnaires distributed among the hosts involved in rural tourism in
    Transcarpathia and in the Highland; 4) processing and evaluation of data.
    The main aim of this empirical research was to compare the Highland questionnaire survey
    findings with the Transcarpathian data to identify the similarities and differences in rural tourism
    of these areas that have been developing at different pace and under different socioeconomic
    conditions in the two countries.

  • Politics and media - Structure of the Hungarian media network in autumn 2018

    This article focusing on the changes within the Hungarian media sphere after the Orban–
    Simicska conflict. After the conflict the Hungarian media sphere has changed radically. Those of
    the media outlets which belonged to Lajos Simicska had cease their operation. Business persons
    who have close ties to Fidesz has founded new media outlets. In my article I analyzed three
    political case which happened during the Fall 2018. I assumed that the media sphere in Hungary
    had become more polarized than before. In order to prove it, I created two groups of the media
    outlets. The first one, which have close ties to the governing party, and the second one which has
    not got ties to Fidesz. During my research I used three different methods. First, I
    recorded astatistics about the articles. According to this, the media agenda shows large difference between
    the groups. I did content analysis on the articles, which shows us a huge polarization between
    the groups. The third one, was network analysis. The network analysis did not confirmed the
    polarization hypothesis.

  • Types of fathers’ home-based and school-based involvement based on an interview study

    In this study, we examine fathers’ home-based and school-based involvement to assist the development and achievement of their children. The international literature suggests that fathers are less involved than mothers, and the form of their involvement is also different. However, their home-based and school-based involvement has been shown to have similar positive effects on children’s educational outcomes. We examine the forms of parental involvement based on the typology created by Epstein and Sanders. In our empirical work, we conducted 14 semi-structured interviews with fathers with young children and aimed to delineate father types based on the forms of involvement by conducting a classification of the interviews. Our results show that the first group of fathers are only involved at home; they do not participate in school-related events with their child but report being actively involved in their child’s education and school-related activities at home. Fathers in the second group, on the other hand, are involved not only at home but also in school life. The third type is made up of divorced fathers who, with one exception, are involved at school and at home, which is consistent with the findings in the literature on single fathers with children. In this study, we also attempt to answer the question of how to increase fathers’ school-based involvement. According to the interviewees’ answers, their activity could be encouraged through support from their wife, greater self-confidence, and events organised by schools which are more suited to fathers (sports events, cooking together).

  • Empirical analysis of the judgment of unconditional basic income through YouTube comments

    One of the world’s largest video-sharing platforms is YouTube, where viewers can comment on
    the videos and their topics. The aim of this study is to examine the values and opinions about
    unconditional basic income according to the comment sections of several Youtube’s videos which
    topic is the previously mentioned UBI which is receiving increasing attention in parallel with
    today’s economic and social changes. Our research works with a mixed method, data collection,
    storage, sentiment analysis and the bag of words method which were implemented using IT
    procedures, while categorization was done through manual coding. The results of the sentiment
    analysis show that positive arguments appear to a lesser extent in the comments. Positive
    arguments have value characteristics such as inclusion, the principle of the right to exist, justice
    and freedom. Among the positive arguments feasibility enjoys the highest support. Negative
    category values arise more frequently, so the emphasis on the values of injustice, exclusion,
    unaffordability, and performance-orientation is dominant in the analyzed comments.

  • The role of the hidden curriculum in the development of horizontal gender segregation, as a result of an interview research with teachers

    The impact and influencing power of educators and teaching aids used in education systems is an internationally researched area as they play a key role in the development and study of students’ personality. According to the literature, the teacher is one of the most significant „tools” of the hidden curriculum behind the official curriculum, but the presentation of the phenomenon in teaching aids strengthens gender stereotypes and reduces the possibility of gender equality. In this study, we examine the role of a hidden curriculum in the development of gender horizontal segregation, with particular reference to the influence of teachers and textbooks. In the empirical part of the study, we did conduct a semi -structured interview with 18 elementary school teachers through a non-probability expert sampling, which was analyzed by categorization and interpretation. Our results show that traditional gender roles have prevailed in the family of educators. During their studies, they observed a difference depending on their educators in terms of behavior and expectations – but they believe that they themselves do not differentiate between students. According to their views, the personality of the teachers is of particular importance regarding the personality development and academic progress of the students, however, the career orientation of the children is mainly determined by the parents family patterns that appear in the family.

  • The social representation of radicalism among young people

    In the study, using data from an international research (Myplace), relying on the theory of
    social representations, we examined the understanding of radicalism of young people aged 15
    to 26 and living in two towns in Hungary (Ózd and Sopron) which differ significantly regarding
    their political socialization. In accordance with an empirical method based on the theory,
    we analyzed the relationship between young people’s attitudes towards nationalism and the
    democratic principles and the representation of radicalism, following the structural and content
    characterization of the representation of radicalism through the quantification of associational
    responses received in the questionnaire survey conducted in 2012.

  • Leadership challenges in virtual environment: The importance of the synergism in ICT toolset and leadership development

    The companies connected to the global value chain inevitably and necessarily apply virtualized
    solutions in their work organization. As such, the appropriate implementation of the shoring
    strategies, the increasing competition and the supply-demand imbalance on the local market of
    the high-skilled workers, all puts the existing organizational and leadership practices to the test.
    The article aims to highlight the main challenges the virtual team leaders (VTL) are facing and
    some best practices that might widen the toolset of the modern VTL. The results are based on a
    case study of a multinational info-communication technology (ICT) service company in which
    experienced managers and leaders shared their strategies. The main takeaways of the empirical
    research are (i) the emphasis on the “early-adopter” behavior and the proper usage of the latest
    technology in the communication, (ii) the importance of the ability of building trust and setting
    common goals; (iii) despite that everyone is perfectly connected via the internet, the regular
    personal presence is still the most powerful leadership tool.

  • Pastoral care for the Gypsies/Romas: Societal engagement of the Churches

    In my adolescence, I noticed that in my small hometown village of Nógrád County, the majority
    of the Romani don’t attend mass and sever their ties with Roman Catholic religion. This tendency
    remains to this very day, and I continue to experience the same thing where I now live in Pest
    County. What could be the reason for this separation? I set out to find the answer with the help
    of twenty years of experience as a divinity teacher and my previous empirical sociology research.
    Is the clergy to be blamed for the large numbers of Gypsies and non-Gypsies leaving the fold?
    I wanted to personally find an answer to the question from the concerned parties. Therefore,
    at the permission of the bishop of the Diocese of Vác, as a Roman Catholic civilian theologian,
    I visited the pastors of the Historical Churches at the various offices and parishes to ask them
    questions about the Romani.

  • The Patterns of free time in secondary schools

    The aim of this study is analyse the free time allocation in different types of secondary schools in Hungary. The use of free time is connected with social inequalities and the agglomeration of cultural capital so these patterns are rooted most of all in the social background. Besides, educational sociology involves an institutional effect in this field as well. Hungary has got a selective educational system and the different types of secondary schools refermainly to specific social groups so the differences in the use of free time can be significant. The database of HungarianYouth Research has been used during this analysis. This database is representative for regions, types of settlement, age and gender (N = 8000) and the subsample of secondary school students can be separated. Quantity of free time, places of free time, features of „screen time activites” and cultural activities have been analysed. Means, chi-sqare statistic, ANOVA-test, factor analysis and linear regression model were used. Our empirical finding scan show the different free time patterns of the subsamples (grammar school, secondary vocational school and vocational school).

  • Certain issues of reliability and validity in the case of generalized trust survey measurement in light of the Hungarian data

    Trust is a field of research in social sciences that has complex, well-developed theoretical
    approaches, but its empirical tools are less precisely grounded. The most common survey tool
    for measuring generalized trust is a formula often referred to in the literature as “standard”
    trust question, which reads as follows: “Generally speaking, would you say that most people can
    be trusted or that you need to be very careful in dealing with people?” The aim of the paper is to
    examine this standard survey item along the dimensions of reliability and validity. In our analysis,
    we use Hungarian data obtained from various international surveys. Our results indicate serious
    validity problems, as the standard question shows only weak linkage with additional variables,
    which, based on the conceptual background, should be in a close relationship with trust.
