  • Mobilization incongruence in the Hungarian local electioms

    In local elections, national voting patterns are often not repeated as results show significant incongruence in terms of turnout, party performance and seat shares. Political science explains these various differences with several distinct theoretical frameworks that approach this incongruence from the aspect of voter behavior. The aim of this study is not to provide an alternative for these conventional explanations but to complement them with the detailed analysis of mobilization in an attempt to clear up certain gaps in the models. My main proposition is that parties can mobilize their supporters for the local elections with differing effectiveness producing incongruence in voter turnout and seat shares. In the capital and in the larger cities there is a mobilization gap mainly affecting left-wing voters that causes lower turnout and weaker electoral performance by these parties. This gap can most probably be explained by a combination of social and institutional factors and has a profound effect on election outcomes.

    Maintaining competitiveness is one of the long-term strategic goals for companies. Beside
    tangible and intangible assets, the value of human capital is continuously growing, due to
    changes in the labour market. A loyal, highly skilled employee makes a significant contribution
    to organizational success through competencies, experience, and skills. The career management
    system of multinational companies became more attractive by the possibility of international
    assignments, which is a very complicated process requiring complex planning. This system is
    considered global for several reasons: its transnational nature, international experience gained
    by the employees and the achievable career on a global scale for the individual (as a part of a
    successful process).
    Creating a global career management system thus involves a number of HR functions.
    Emphasis should be placed on finding suitable employees, selecting, onboarding, mentoring, on
    methods and the evaluators in the performance appraisal process, providing feedback on a
    regular basis and in an appropriate manner, achieving and maintaining motivation, developing
    competencies and supporting the balance in mental health.

  • Factor of wage satisfaction in the light of a satisfaction survey

    Present study reports about the survey results of an empirical research reflecting the wage satisfaction level of employees. The part of the empirical research done in 4 different administration bodies in 2019 with the help of an online questionnaire survey is presented, in which results are summarized concerning responses to competitiveness of the wage system, relation of wage and performance, and the satisfaction with wage and further allowances.

    This study is part of a university programme that has been running for several years. At the University of Debrecen, in the academic year 2000/2001, the then Rector's administration initiated a new talent management programme, which was integrated into the existing forms - TDK, vocational colleges, demonstrator network. The novel features of this programme were the multi-stage assessment of the admission procedure and the different forms of support, in particular the tutoring system (Balogh - Fónai, 2003). Admission to the programme is in three stages, the first of which is a process in which faculties delegate the top fifth of full-time second-year students on the basis of their academic performance.

  • „Beyond the school...”: The role of Study Halls in the social integration of disadvantaged children

    Extracurricular activities have a significant role in increasing the disadvantaged Roma children’s school performance and compensate their socialization disadvantages. In the recent years, the study hall program becomes widely known in Hungary. Based on the literature and previous researches the study examines the needs, milestones, goals and target groups of the study hall program. This paper also demonstrates the economic and social conditions of the Integration Program, which has been in operation for 20 years, and supports effectively the development of social competences of disadvantaged social groups.

  • Social vulnerability and interpersonal support in disaster experienced Hungarian settlements

    Natural disasters unequally affect poor and wealthy populations, which can be observed everywhere regardless of the economic performance of the respective country. Paradigms focusing on physical hazards and response can not be considered, while social, political and cultural causes are rarely mentioned in the discussions around particular disaster events. Marginalized households and communities, and populations with less income are more affected by disasters. A significant proportion of Hungary’s settlements are deprived or otherwise marginalized, which makes it necessary to raise social and economic questions related to disasters, and investigate them from a spatial aspect. This study is based on case studies of five disaster-affected settlements and encompasses a social vulnerability approach. The research is based on interviews with key informants involved in response to the respective disasters and broadened with an experiment to use the Interpersonal Support Evaluation List as an instrument to investigate community resilience. The ISEL is capable of observing the individuals’ self-perception of themselves in their communities and how they can rely on others in their environment. The survey, with the participation of 103 people, discovered discrepancies in the level and structure of interpersonal support, which is tangible based on the interviews.

  • Hungarian Academics Working Abroad: Female and Male Career Paths

    Transnational mobility has not only become an integral part of the successful, internatonally driven career path of academics, but is emerging to a great extent as a major performance requirement. Similarly to academic careers in general, international mobility of researchers is also a gendered process to a great extent. This paper aims to assess the most important characteristics of Hungarian researchers working abroad with special attention put on the similarities and differences identified in the career path of female and male researchers. With an online self-administered questionnaire distributed through a snowball sampling methodology
    among Hungarian PhD-holders working abroad for more than one year, we investigated the motivation for international mobility, the career path, work contracts, work-life balance, future career plans and the perception of the value of the PhD degree. Our key findings indicate that male researchers’s labour market position is more advantageous abroad than female researchers’ and overall they are more convinved of the positive value of their PhD degree, while female academics were statisfied, but at a more moderate level.

  • Basic income: Sugar-coating over a bitter pill?

    Current and future evolutions in labour markets may be blurring lines between traditional
    employment and new types of atypical employment, making it harder to reliably assess whether
    someone is receiving any benefits at all. The basic income should be seen as a serious option in
    the future, given the changing labor market and the findings from existing cash transfer schemes.BI is not means-tested, so the amount received does not depend on individual or family income or
    assets and does not require any work performance, or the willingness to accept a job if offered.
    In this study I examine the created image by the media through the method of content
    analysis, in relation to basic income. Furthermore, it is analyzed to what extent this effect creates
    a negative image of basic income among the students of the University of Debrecen, strengthening
    the fear towards this social policy tool. Particular attention is paid to the value choices of young
    people focusing on their individualization, motivation of working and willingness to take risks.

  • Understanding Aspects to the Ethnospecific Researches on the Gypsy Jazz

    The early “research of Gypsies”, romology, then the visible and the hidden processes of
    “tziganology” in anthropology included a shift in the state of understanding between the
    hillside of critical interpretation studies and that of local group psychology. They also involved
    the research of folk tales, dancing, poverty, examining segregation and participatory action
    methodology as well as innovation and rebirth of the musicological research of Gypsy music.
    The terminological aspect of “us” and “others”, expressing alterity and identity, points towards
    the more complex study of (ethnic) “minorities”, moreover knowledge and field studies, and
    results of examining narratives (such as tales, dances, visual worksof art, publicity, religion and
    community), bring us closer (by way of political and scientific pragmatism) to signalling a new
    era of empathic understanding. The aim of the paper is to highlight the ways leading to that
    goal, putting the musical aspects of the shift in focus, consisting of stylistic inventions, a worldmusic-based openness towards instruments and performance cultures, which nevertheless still
    carries the signs of a new era of projection and knowledge contents, first-person-narrative and
    narrative identities. Finding answers to the question “where did it come from” might be aided
    by contemplating “where does it go”. This would be both the aim and partially the structure of
    my thematic essay.
