    The paper takes into account theoretical, speculative considerations to explain why villagers, especially highly educated young villagers, stay (relocate) to their village after completing their studies. Explanations are needed because the usual assumptions are that the village offers poorer job opportunities, lower earnings, poorer conditions of consumption, entertainment and education than cities - it seems useful and rational for young people to move to a city (or abroad) with a richer supply of facilities; if they are geographically and socially mobile. Against this often generalized assumption, there are circumstances in which both the interests of material utility and the prospect for gaining attractive social status make it a reasonable choice to stay in the village, to be ‚immobile’. These circumstances are considered as possible explanations for immobility.

    Migration for the purpose of employment is an important social phenomenon. The following
    study provides insight into the situation of labor migration in Szeklerland after the change of
    regime. It outlines the most important trends that define this social process from 1990 to the
    present and indicates the changes along which the different periods of labor migration can be
    separated. The study discusses the changing perceptions of the connection between migration
    and development. The last subchapter contains an analysis about the phenomenon of decisionmaking in the context of new lifestyle trends resulting from migration.

  • Community resilience and social support relationships – An analytical approach and research results based on long-term series analysis of communities affected by the red sludge disaster

    vOne of the most serious consequences of disasters is the disruption or even the loss of social
    support relationships. Hence, this paper analyses the social support relationships in the
    framework of community resilience based on face-to-face interviews with direct (180 people)
    and indirect (180 people) victims of the red sludge disaster, using data for 2013 and 2020.
    (Hungary, Devecser district).
    The focus was analysed according to four types of social support relationship: reciprocal,
    donor to recipient and incomplete/disintegrated. At the time of the disaster, we identified a high
    level of support activity and a strong reciprocal-donor type of aid model. In contrast, in 2013, we
    found an incomplete/disintegrated - reciprocal model with low support activity, and in 2020, a
    reciprocal- incomplete/disintegrated model with medium activity.
    Based on a detailed statistical analysis of different social support types among the red
    sludge disaster’s victims the paper explores and presents the social support activities and
    their various patterns with respect to their roles in the resilience of communities. The different
    patterns of social supports relationships that emerged in each period examined varied widely,
    though – with different intensity – they were primarily influenced by the fact how people were
    affected by disaster’s damages (directly and indirectly). Nevertheless, by 2020, other factors,
    such as residence, age, and economic activity had already an equally strong impact on different
    types of social support relationships as the affectedness by the disaster of 2010. We found that
    communities responded to the red sludge disaster in 2010 and to the Covid-19 epidemic in 2020
    in a reactive way by activating their social support relationship.

    The impact and influencing power of educators and teaching aids used in education systems is an internationally researched area as they play a key role in the development and study of students’ personality. According to the literature, the teacher is one of the most significant „tools” of the hidden curriculum behind the official curriculum, but the presentation of the phenomenon in teaching aids strengthens gender stereotypes and reduces the possibility of gender equality. In this study, we examine the role of a hidden curriculum in the development of gender horizontal segregation, with particular reference to the influence of teachers and textbooks. In the empirical part of the study, we did conduct a semi -structured interview with 18 elementary school teachers through a non-probability expert sampling, which was analyzed by categorization and interpretation. Our results show that traditional gender roles have prevailed in the family of educators. During their studies, they observed a difference depending on their educators in terms of behavior and expectations – but they believe that they themselves do not differentiate between students. According to their views, the personality of the teachers is of particular importance regarding the personality development and academic progress of the students, however, the career orientation of the children is mainly determined by the parents family patterns that appear in the family.

    For more than fifty years, the Tunisian political system has been considered as a so-called secular system that had provided women with many rights in education, healthcare and in economic and political sectors, besides that woman friendly family laws reforms After the overthrown of Ben Ali regime on 14th of January 2011, the Tunisian society witnessed an economic, social and political significant transformation. A new Islamic-secular discourse have been raised debates both in public and private sphere, women’s rights have been one of the incendiary topics of these debates. Therefore, with the participation of the Islamists in political life, the country has faced a new political dynamic which made the pollical scene complex and ambiguous. In this context, discourse analysis is a very important and crucial to be used as a method to approach to the research main question. Some leaders’ speeches, events which took place during the democratic transition are examined and analyzed in order to serve the research’s analytic interest through the relevant materials.

    The article gives a summary of the most relevant results of the sociological and sociopsychological special literature concerning the transition to market economy and political
    pluralism in Hungary. The transition affected the different regions and different social groups
    disproportionately. The article points out that the last three decades were not enough for the
    destruction of the legacy of state socialism resulting learned helplessness and paternalism.

  • The civil activity of higher education students and the correlation of their chances of dropping out

    Our research question is that volunteering and civil organization membership of higher education students are able to protect against dropping out from higher education or even divert from effective learning and hinder persistence. The positive or negative effect of civil activity of students is measured by quantitative multivariable method, and the question is whether there is there a clear effect of civil activity on persistence, after allowing the effect of other socio-demographic variables. The results show, that civil activity of students neither protect against dropping out nor hinder persistence in our sample. There were several variables which affected civil activity, and the good relationship with parents is protecting the most against dropping out from higher education, but the fact, that civil activity is neither divert from effective learning, and nor hinder persistence means that it is important to improve civil activity of higher education students due to its’ several positive effects.

    The idea of writing my essay comes from the book ‘Embert barátjáról – A barátság szociológiája’
    written by Fruzsina Albert and Beáta Dávid. I am especially interested in the appearance and
    significance of the typical social capital, i.e. friendship, among the students of the Sapientia
    University of Miercurea Ciuc (Csíkszereda) and that of the ELTE (Budapest). In order to
    investigate the phenomenon of friendship, I chose a qualitative strategy, namely focus group
    research.
    Although I have expected greater contrasts by comparing the students of these two distinct
    locations, I have found that friendship among the interviewed young people constitutes universal value with more common than different patterns.

    At the end of the first decade of the new millennium, several works on the Hungarian Roma, their history, their current exclusion and their unresolved social situation, based on the same approach, partly on social history and partly on sociological surveys, appeared. Gábor Kertesi in 2005 ("On the margins of society. Roma in the labour market and in school") and Csaba Dupcsik in 2009 ("The history of the Hungarian Roma. History in the light of Gypsy studies 1890-2008") were published by Osiris Publishing House, while Tünde Virág's 2010 book ("Kirekesztve. Falusi gettók az ország margemén") was published by Akadémiai Kiadó as a result of a successful OTKA grant.
    The most recently published work, presented at the 83rd Festive Book Week, is the first joint publication of Balázs Majtényi, a constitutional lawyer who is concerned with the protection of human rights, and György Majtényi, a historian who is particularly interested in the cultural and social history of the 20th century (including the Kádár era). The book, which can be ordered online with two different hardcover editions, was based on a 2003 study, which was later jointly expanded, combining the research results of several disciplines and "maturing" into a separate volume. However, it fails to provide the in-depth analysis of the subject of the title: it (also) fails to provide a factual social portrait of realities, of phenomena experienced and lived on a day-to-day basis, of phenomena examined from several perspectives, and of realistic alternatives to solutions.

  • The vision of young people living in villages

    According to the results of the youth research, young people are often pointless and find it difficult to plan for the future. Based on the results of a qualitative study conducted in 2018, this study presents the future plans of a special target group of young people aged 19–25 living in villages who have completed their education. We looked at how young people think about their career paths at school and in the labor market and also their future residence. Based on their ideas on their future, we classified young people into three types (conscious future builder, drifting, accumulator of failures) and, in the analysis, we present each vision indicator based on the types examined. We will also look at how the educational gap between young people and the current situation in life influence future plans.

  • Interpersonal relationships in Hungary – an overview

    Our paper aims to demonstrate that social structure has significant impact on the formation of
    interpersonal relations. We review and analyse the characteristics of ego-centric interpersonal
    networks of Hungarians based on data from nationally representative adult population surveys
    between the mid-1980’s up to 2015. We focus especially on core discussion networks, friendship
    ties and weak ties and analyse how the transition to market economy influenced interpersonal
    relationships. As expected, the large-scale social changes brought about by the transition
    changed interpersonal networks as well. During the first decade of the transition (in the 1990’s)
    one could not witness a significant change of personal networks, nonetheless the adaptation
    process was easier for people supported by strong, traditional family ties. Non-kin ties, especially
    friendships seem to gain significance at the expense of kin relationships. Overall, resources
    available through weak ties seem to be decreasing.

    In my adolescence, I noticed that in my small hometown village of Nógrád County, the majority
    of the Romani don’t attend mass and sever their ties with Roman Catholic religion. This tendency
    remains to this very day, and I continue to experience the same thing where I now live in Pest
    County. What could be the reason for this separation? I set out to find the answer with the help
    of twenty years of experience as a divinity teacher and my previous empirical sociology research.
    Is the clergy to be blamed for the large numbers of Gypsies and non-Gypsies leaving the fold?
    I wanted to personally find an answer to the question from the concerned parties. Therefore,
    at the permission of the bishop of the Diocese of Vác, as a Roman Catholic civilian theologian,
    I visited the pastors of the Historical Churches at the various offices and parishes to ask them
    questions about the Romani.

  • The characteristics of social contact intensity, contact frequency and contact structure in Hungary in 2006 and 2015

    The study aims at comparing the Hungarian results of the questions on the frequency of personal and distance contact with relatives and friends in the 2006 and 2015 ad hoc modules of EU-SILC. According to our results, in line with the findings of previous Hungarian research, compared to 2006, there were fewer contacts in Hungary in 2015. Relations with friends, especially those held in person, were less exposed to weakening compared to relations with relatives. Among the different social groups, the already disadvantaged were typically negatively affected by either the change in intensity or the structure of relationships. However, the situation of the elderly and the inhabitants of deprived households deteriorated in all three dimensions examined: their re­lations weakened more strongly, and those related to relatives and personal ones further narro­wed by 2015. This result indicates that the social disintegration of these groups has accelerated particularly between the two years, which poses a serious social policy challenge.

  • The effect of successfulness on family and friendly relationships

    The study examines the impact of leadership roles and success on family and friendship relationships between men and women. The literature on this topic typically focuses on the analysis of success and failure, but the impact of family and friendships on leadership success is a less published area. The questionnaire data collection (n = 437) was conducted among women and men using a snowball method, with separate questionnaires. The questionnaire data were analysed using ANOVA test and Chi-square test. Research findings suggest that female and male leaders differ in their perceptions of the impact of their own successful leadership roles. Male leaders perceived personal skills, unique ideas, reputation and spousal support as determinants of successful leadership, whereas female respondents did not perceive these factors as being important. More than half of men (51.8%) agreed with the statement that their leadership successes have led them to make new friends instead of old ones. This compares with only 4% of women. Almost half of female leaders (47.1%) believe that they have kept their old friends. Less than half (45.1%) of women feel that leadership has had a positive or negative impact on family and relationships.

  • Quality of life, disability of people living with psychiatric diagnosis

    The paper aims at demonstrating the quality of life of the people living with psychiatic diagnosis.
    I used the data stemming from the standard and specific module (Social Inequalities in Health
    Quality) of the European Social Survey to present the quality of life of the disabled persons. I
    applied qualtitative methodology to investigate specifities of life course in case of people living
    with psychiatric diagnosis. My results suggest that people defining themselves as ’disabled’
    differ from non-hampered population first of all in the indicators of emotional and physical
    subjective well-being. According to the narrative interviews the quality of life of people living
    with psychiatric diagnose is largely influenced by their adaptive and coping strategies aiming to
    preserve the balance of their mental status.

  • Similarities and Differences of Students’ Labour Market Paths Graduated in the Field of Social Science

    We study graduate trainees’ (short) paths of four „social courses” and their transition from higher education to the labour market. We have thought in cases of the chosen social courses, that differences can become perceivable besides similarities. It has also been assumed that sociologists of the four chosen professions can be characterized by a diverse labour market behaviour from the other ones. It can be partially explained by the objectives, the content of their courses and the flexibility of the prospective institutional system. Compared to the above in cases of other social courses a diverse picture has been experienced by us based on the socio-demographic background and experience in labour market, expectations and satisfaction. Social workers and socio-politicians’ socio-demographic indicators are quite similar just like the socio-politicians and sociologists’ indicators are. This may be due to the effect of the level of master/academic education. We analyse the results of Graduate Tracking System (GTS) 2015 data collection in our presentation. The research was carried out by the Educational Office in co-operation with higher education institutions in the form of an online questionnaire. We sorted the respondents of the four chosen courses (828) out of all graduated (20 579).

  • The challenges of supervised machine learning in sociological applications

    The sociological applications of supervised machine learning, already well proven in industrial/
    business applications, raise specific questions. The reason for this specificity is that in these applications, the algorithm is tasked with learning complex concepts (e.g. whether a tweet contains hate speech). Supervised learning consists of learning to classify previously annotated (hate
    speech/non-hate speech) texts by the algorithm, looking for characteristic text patterns. The
    questions that arise are: how to prepare annotation? How can a hermeneutic challenge such as
    hate speech recognition be performed by annotators? Are routinely applied, detailed annotation
    guidelines helpful? The article also discusses how large companies perform coding on crowdsourcing platforms, and describes AI bias, which in this case means that annotators themselves
    introduce bias into the data. I illustrate these issues with our own research experiences.

  • Forms of parental control in the case of postadolescent youth

    The present study addresses control factors that emerge during the detachment of young people in the post-adolescent age that may delay or hinder the detachment process of the young adult. It aims to highlight that childhood upbringing, the child-parent relationship, and the communication that takes place between them allow the creation of a new type of typology in which not only parental control tools can be identified but also social control mechanisms can be identified. Most post-adolescence research traces the success or extent of detachment mostly to the financial situation of young people. This paper, however, aims to briefly demonstrate that a deeper understanding of the dimensions of detachment as conceived by László Vaskovics is possible through the study of attachments and bonds.

  • Low-educated young people in the labour market in the Derecske sub-region

    The aim of my analysis is to explore the social background, capital endowment and labour market situation of low-educated young people and to compare it with the situation of the more highly educated. The research was carried out in the framework of the project "Rural Youthjobs" Facilitating the Integration of Rural Youth ont he Labour Market of Bihor - Hajdú-Bihar Euro-Region HURO/1001/081/2.3.2 in the Derecske sub-region in 2012. A stratified sample of 10% was used for the questionnaire survey. Young people aged 14-37 years participated in the survey and were interviewed in five municipalities, 228 in Derečke, 80 in Sáránd, 38 in Tépé, 91 in Hosszúpályi and 64 in Konyár, for a total of N=501.

    From these, in the present analysis, I have selected the employed (142 persons), the registered unemployed (81 persons) and the non-registered unemployed (24 persons), and excluded the rest of the inactive population, as the main aim of my work was to study the currently active population, thus the number of elements was N=247 persons.

  • Solidarity and autonomy in times of an epidemic

    The paper seeks to answer the question: what patterns of solidarity and autonomy can be identified in the Hungarian context of late modernity. The specific difficulty of answering this question is that it refers to social structures, which are naturalized interpretations of reality, thus exist mostly at an unreflective, preintentional level. In order to address this difficulty, our research has considered the COVID epidemic as a natural experimental situation: while the paradoxes and distortions of solidarity and autonomy, are usually naturalized by the actors, during the COVID they become reflected. The first section of the paper develops theoretical idealtypes of autonomy and solidarity specialised to the Hungarian social historical context. Then, after a brief methodological overview, I will present different patterns of solidarity and autonomy in the form of case studies. In the final section, the general conclusions are drawn from these cases, while an attempt is made to answer the question: how do the actors cope with modernisation structures that narrow the space of solidarity and autonomy and are characterized by fundamental paradoxes?

    The article aims at analysing the idealtypical paradoxes of solidarity in a Hungarian rural
    community. The case study focuses on helping processes embedded in various integration
    mechanisms (including conservatory, reflexive and cybernetical ones – Sik 2015), while
    reconstructing the perspectives of the helping and the supported actors. During the field work
    interviews (n=22), small surveys (n=95) and observations (1 week) were collected, which were
    interpreted in several turns. The results of the research reveal the idealtypical paradoxes of
    solidarity in various social spaces, and also the consequences of their accumulation. According to
    our conclusion, it is particularly important to reflect upon these latter, mostly latent paradoxes,
    as their treatment is indispensable for any spontaneous or expert social interventions.
