  • Factor of wage satisfaction in the light of a satisfaction survey

    Present study reports about the survey results of an empirical research reflecting the wage satisfaction level of employees. The part of the empirical research done in 4 different administration bodies in 2019 with the help of an online questionnaire survey is presented, in which results are summarized concerning responses to competitiveness of the wage system, relation of wage and performance, and the satisfaction with wage and further allowances.

    The aim of my study is to examine the appearance of ecology and natural environment in the
    theory and practice of social work. By reviewing international literature, my aim is to review and
    systematize basic theories and professional directions. I also consider it important to look at the
    Hungarian aspects. Global environmental changes and social changes interact, and the social
    work profession evolves, and incudes new trends and approaches while reflecting ever-changing
    challenges. The relationship between the person and his/her environment has always been one
    of the central themes of social work, but the pursuit of sustainability and the focus on the natural
    environment may bring a new dimension to the interpretation of the person-in-environment
    approach. In my paper, I attempt to understand the values and motivations of ‘green social work’,‘environmental social work’ and ‘eco-social work’ and I attempt to understand the relationship
    between social work and the natural environment, and examine the roles social workers may
    carry on related to the global environmental changes.

    The present article analyses the touristic market in Covasna/Kovászna county, Transylvania, Romania. The basis of the paper are 30 semistructured deep interviews and one
    focus group interview which had 6 participants who are all representatives of organisations active in the field of tourism. As the result of our research we can clearly state
    that there are four different regulation levels: the level of governmental regulations,
    professional organisations, cooperation and level of informal economy. Through the
    presentation of these four levels we will also touch upon the issues related to professionalization, trust and quality.

    Clichéd as it may seem, it is undeniably true that the employment situation in Hungary is bad. The profound transformation of the economy and society in 1989-1990 brought about fundamental changes in the labour market. The main features of this were the disappearance of full employment and the emergence and persistence of unemployment. The economic activity of the Hungarian population declined significantly, due to, among other things, the disappearance or restructuring of enterprises and cooperatives, the fall in production and turnover, and the more intensive use of labour under new conditions, while the number of economically inactive increased.

    To avoid unemployment, people opted en masse for pensions or pension-like benefits, while young people stayed in school longer in the hope of better job prospects and, even with a much lower birth rate, the number of people still using home-based forms of childcare was essentially the same as before. After 1998, the number of inactive people fell slightly, but in 2009 the number of 15-64 year olds was still 2.6 million, about 7% (166,000) higher than in 1992. Employment fell significantly in the years following the change of regime, mainly as a result of the transformation of the economy. It reached its lowest point in 1996, when some 3.6 million people were in work, 1.3 million fewer than in the period of regime change.

    A Kádár-korszak gyári munkásaival foglalkozó történeti munkák leginkább egyes üzemeken vagy egy-egy településen keresztül mutatták be és elemezték a dolgozók hétköznapjait (Horváth 2004, Bartha 2009, Horváth et al. 2003). Az alábbi írásomban ugyanezt az utat kívánom követni, csak a Csepel Autógyár munkásairól kívánok beszélni. Egyfelől azért, mert a szakirodalom alapján igazolva látom Kemény István nézetét (Kozák, Kemény 1970, Kemény, Kozák 1971), miszerint korántsem egységes, hanem gyárak szerint elkülönült és változó képet adó „munkásságokról” beszélhetünk a korszakban. Másfelől témám, az üzemi munkások fusizása, habár országos szinten megfigyelhető volt, de országrészenként eltérő lehetőségekkel valósult meg.

    A Csepel Autógyár egykori dolgozóival készített interjúk és levéltári anyagok alapján arra keresem a választ, hogy a munkások a propaganda által gyakorta hangoztatott „tiéd a gyár, magadnak építed”4 jelszót miként valósították meg. Milyen fajta informális út volt alkalmas a törvényi vagy rendeleti szabályozás kikerülésére, vagyis a fusizás végrehajtására. Ennek kifejtése lehetőséget ad arra, hogy bemutathassam, az önös érdekét néző fusizó munkás képe valójában kritikátlanul megmaradt, miközben a fusizás társadalmi feladatban végzett, szintén önérdeket is szolgáló munkához is kapcsolódott.

  • “Can’t you see that we are in trouble?” – The environmental protection-related ignorance, its appearance in visual attentional patterns, and some possible explanation/interpretation

    The environmental crisis is an outstanding topic nowadays. Given that it is basically caused
    by human activity, this issue is worth examining at all levels of society. The present study
    investigated the individuals’ visual attentional patterns and the possible attentional biases related to pictures displaying environmental problems, in comparison to undisturbed nature
    and social scenes as control stimuli, within the framework of a reaction-time task. Changes
    in participants’ mood and their self-reported environmental awareness were also measured.
    However, only the negative social scenes resulted attentional bias, the environmental topics
    were not able to do that. Albeit the mood of the participants deteriorated during the experiment,
    it did not have any correlation with any other variables, and either did the environmental
    awareness. We displayed the stimuli during the task only for a short period of time, thereby we
    targeted to reach automatic attentional responses. Our results reflect to the fact, that the topic
    of the environmental crisis is not suitable to do this. This phenomenon propounds the demand of
    explanations behind this phenomenon (like the possible evolutionary background).

  • The Party System of the European Parliament between 2004–2019

    The paper examines the party system of the European Parliament (EP) between 2004–2019
    through European Parliamentary Groups. It applies party system typologies in an international
    case. The examined period starts from 2004, which marks the largest enlargement of the
    dominating the decision-making In addition to the widely used typologies developed by Blondel
    and Sartori, the present paper focuses on the relationship between the political groups in the
    EP and their role in decision-making. It draws conclusions about the nature of the party system
    and its changes over three cycles from the internal cohesion indices and coalition statistics of
    the political groups. The party system of the EP is a polarised pluralist system dominated by
    two political groups (bidominant). In the period under review, the party system of the EP can be
    characterized as balanced, showing only small changes.

  • Knowledge, power and discourses in Van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis

    Critical Discourse Analysis (or Critical Discourse Studies – CDA/CDS) examines the relationship between texts, discourses and power, dominance, power abuses and social inequalities. Critical discourse analysis is a multidisciplinary research perspective, which not only examines the interactions between the text, the micro level and its surroundings, the macro level, but its main goal is to uncover social inequalities, expose the forms and modalities of abuse of power. The representatives of CDA are committed to social equality and justice. Present paper presents the work of one of the outstanding representatives of Critical Discourse Analysis, Teun A. Van Dijk, by presenting the history and possibilities of CDA, and also the key elements of Van Dijk’s approach. This study aims to show how knowledge, power and discourse are connected in Van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis.

  • Processes of change in the Hungarian and Ukrainian Community in Izsnyéte, Transcarpathia

    I started my research in Izsnyéte, Transcarpathia, in 2012 with an anthropological research group. Initially, we were curious about the coexistence mechanisms of the local settlement, the cultural peculiarities of the ethnic groups living there, but due to the war situation, we had to stop our empirical research sooner before 2015. In 2017, as a doctoral student, I continued my empirical research in Izsnyéte, where Hungarians represent an absolute majority against the state-forming Ukrainian ethnic group. The basic research concept was to choose a local settlement close to the border where two or three different ethnicities have lived together for decades. In my study, I examine the process of ethnicity production and the processes of image and change of the living ethnicities of the settlement and their applicability to each other in comparison with the data of previous research, reflecting on the changes, mainly in the light of assimilation. Already the results of the 2012 research showed spatial isolation, in many cases dissimilation was experienced among coexisting ethnicities, but with many other factors and aspects several years later, it caused diverse processes.

    We investigate changes in the socio-economical, labor market, and educational situation of the
    Hungarian youngsters from Transylvania; the investigation is based on two large-scale (MOZAIK
    2001 and Youth 2016) surveys. The principal research question is the choice of the paradigm
    from the toolbox of social stratification that can describe the inequalities within this group.
    Our conclusions state that the influence traditional variables diminished, and that horizontal
    differences must be taken also into consideration to better describe stratification.

  • Closed institution inmates’ views about the family

    When researching the reasons for criminal behaviour, literature almost unequivocally emphasises the responsibility and role of the family, where as the number of studies analysing the functioning of families of inmates in closed institutions (reform schools, special children’s homes) is relatively low. The present pilot research (with the purpose of preparing a wider one) tries to fill this gap. Using semi-structured interviews, we attempted to explore the inmates’ family background, what methods were used during their upbringing, what they thought about the family and its role and importance in one’s life. Harassment had occurred in juvenile delinquents’ families in various forms: it had physical and emotional manifestations, and therefore its impact on the affected person’s personality is extremely complex. These young people did not/do not have a safe background, and thus they were more easily influenced to choose the wrong way; they did not have a real childhood, never had the experience of common games or hiking, and never felt an atmosphere of trust, love and security. It was apparent that in these young people’s families very little attention was paid to each family member’s personal sensitivity or opinion, and emotional ties were either missing or were strongly distorted. In such a family environment, the young people were unable to solve the crises of adolescence which are parts of normal development, the family did not ensure support in coping with the tension, and they were left alone with solving their problems. Consequently, it is not surprising that they had great difficulties in telling what the family meant to them and what ideas they had about their future family.

  • The Rethinking the public in Higher Education: Communitarian Engagement vs. Service-Based dependency

    There has been structural change in higher education due to the impact of institutions built or maintained in private public partnership. The aim of the paper is to give a deep insight into how these institutions could accomodate or shape the public higher education sector’s discouses, spaces, procedures. The research used mixed method to approach this complex question from a multidisciplinary perspective (sociology, education). Within this framework two residential halls were chosen and 17 interviews were carreid out with all relevant figure of the management. Due to the analytical tools of Maxqda 12 the qualitative results will be presented giving an insight into the differing discourses and practices of the public vs. private-public management. Based on the analysis of the managerial interviews it is safe to state that the public management struggles to balance a communitarian, democratic discourse and objectives with the requirements of efficiency and accountability. The presence of private-public management unintendedly shapes its public counterpart. The institutional analysis revealed that due to the swiftly changing institutional and policy environment residential halls are forced to be efficient leading to difficulties in managerial legitimacy and questions concepts such as community, conformity, commitment and action. Under the circumstances of increasingly growing institutional service-based dependency and control, academic consumers, institutions and students alike, paradoxically avoid integrating into macro groups. As a consequence, the institution encourage and educate student into a particular type of citizenship based on communication and consumerism rather than consensus.

  • Transition from higher education to the IT sector in Cluj-Napoca

    The present paper focuses on those factors that affect transition from higher education to the
    IT sector in Cluj-Napoca, in cases of entrants with informatics, automatization and computer
    technology degree. The results show that transition to the IT market in Cluj-Napoca is primarily
    influenced by the dependency of the local IT market on western IT markets with more central
    positions, followed by the competition for workforce. The first factor: dependency is due to skill
    shortages on the labour market in Cluj-Napoca. Launching new trainings with the involvement
    of other departments at universities, such as design, business, sales, marketing or business
    informatics can reduce dependency according to the representatives of the local institutions of higher education. Transition from higher education to the IT sector for entrants in ClujNapoca is smooth, due to the strong competition for workforce (second factor). Entrants select
    their potential workplace based on the reputation of a workplace, position/projects, team
    and remuneration. Labour shortage is present both in the IT sector and in higher education.
    A long-term solution for reducing labour shortage in both sectors could be provided by creating
    attractive career paths in the academy which would require stronger cooperation between
    companies, state and higher education institutions, according to the representatives of the
    institutions of higher education.

  • The effect of Covid-19 epidemic on the industry of a Sub-Saharan Country: a perspective on sports industry in Nigeria

    Kutatásunk során a Covid-19 járvány Nigéria gazdaságára és sportiparára kifejtett hatását elemeztük, a kapcsolódó szakirodalom áttekintésével. Megvizsgáltuk a sportgazdaság Covid-19 járvány alatti helyzetét Európában és az Egyesült Államokban, majd kiemeltük a nigériai speciális viszonyokat. Bár a sportgazdaság nigériai vonatkozásában kevés szakirodalom áll rendelkezésre, több mint 60 tudományos közlemény elemzésére került sor. Ezek alapján megállapításra került, hogy a Covid-19 járvány nemcsak a globális, de a nigériai gazdaságot is negatívan érintette. Ez különösen jelentős volt a sporthoz kapcsolódó direkt és indirekt
    foglalkoztatás területén, tekintettel a nigériai gazdaság egy-szektorú jellegére. Vizsgálataik alapján szerzők javaslatként fogalmazzák meg, hogy figyelembe véve a nigériai társadalom korfáját, jelentős befektetések lennének szükségesek a sportiparba, mely a szektor átalakításával is együtt kellene, hogy járjon.

     

  • Participatory research of social issues: practical experience from a research project on homelessness

    This article is an account of our practical research and cooperation experience from a
    participatory research project on homelessness and psychosocial disability carried out in a
    Hungarian university context, by a student and two experts by experience in a researcher role.
    We argue for the involvement of disadvantaged people using social services in research related
    to disadvantaged people and social services, highlighting the advantages and challenges of this
    kind of research based on our experience. Finally, we formulate practical recommendations that
    migh be useful for beginners – like we used to be – in participatory research in this field.
