  • Drawn Commuters: Caricature as a visual historical resource

    Despite of the fact that during the time of state socialism commuters meant a continuously
    growing social group both in proportion and in size, writing about their social history has
    been pushed into the background so far. The author’s aim is to fill this gap by trying to discover
    the most of the available sources of different genres. The present study shows part of this
    larger volume work, it shows what it can add to our knowledge about a social group through
    traditional sources if we include caricatures of a given social group as visual historical sources
    in the analysis.
    In this paper, the author analyses sixteen caricatures of commuters, published in “Ludas
    Matyi,” comparing written and audio visual sources. In the study, she tries, among other things,
    to find out if there was a definite commuter picture of “Ludas Matyi”, and if so, to what extent
    did this commuter’s image differ from that of other products in the press? To what extent did the
    satirical portrayal of commuters refer to long-distance commuters and to what extent to daily
    commuters? Were the real anomalies of commuting in the era reflected in Ludas Matyi?
    The analysis discusses the economic and social processes that characterize the time of
    publishing the caricatures, and denominates the external and internal characteristics and
    emotions commuters were endowed with.The aim of the author is to present the method of
    caricature analysis, which emphasizes the comparability of resources.

  • Trust, distrust, self-trust

    The current paper attempts to embrace trust and distrust as emotions, as well as showing trust or distrust as cognitively justified decisions in one coherent theoretical framework. It links these emotional and action-like domains together by the notion of self-trust which is interpreted as a form of rationale. The argument claims that self-trust of those people who are able to trust others functions in a completely different way in compare to the one of distrusting subjects.

  • About the ideological dimensions of fear

    The main goal of of my research is to explore the right and left dimensions of the phenomenon of fear. I would like to argue that the categories of left and right continue to be defining aspects of political identities, and by mapping their emotional structure we can better understand the current relevance of these ideologies. The studies that have examined political fears have mostly linked fear to conservativism and right wing-populism, while the fears of the left have generated far less scientific interest. A study also wants to respond to this research gap. In this paper, I would like to present the potential connection points between fear and ideological identity. The structure of the study is as follows: first, I outline the relationship between ideology and moral emotions, and then I analyze fear as a moral emotion. After that I present how fear is connected to conservatism and right-wing populism, and then I try to illustrate the ideological differences with two types of politically relevant fear, i.e. climate anxiety and migration-related fear. Finally, I add context to these specific political fears that is I also interpret them in the Hungarian political system. The study ends with drawing conclusions and outlining future research directions.

  • My healthy life: a health and skill developing program in the child care services

    We present a health education and skill development program for two groups (N=30) of 7-14 years old children in this paper. The target group of our program were children in the family care system. In their case, primer prevention regarding a healthy lifestyle is an important goal. Their families often have difficult life circumstances thus the “social culture” of their (Wessely 2003) may endanger their healthy personality development. The program aimed the development of their physical, psychic and mental health, focusing on the holistic understanding of the concept of health according to the bio-psychosocial health paradigm. As a result of the program, we experienced positive outcomes among the children like higher level cooperation skills, more cognitive knowledge about health, development of their communication, improved self expression and expression of emotions. In the group of adolescent children we experienced the improvement of tolerance, empathy, adaptation and problem solving skills. We consider their wish for further education, the forming of their future plans and life goals as a great result.

  • A Hidden Stream in Medical Education

    The general aim of medical education is the same as in the case of any other ones: creating a professional person from a lay one. A special characteristic of this education is a deep rift between the lay and the professional perspective. One of the main trends of this trait is the discrepancy between the open and the hidden curricula. The contents of the hidden curricula, in many cases, cannot support the main messages of the formal one, on the contrary, they provide a different or even contradictory set of norms, values,
    attitudes. One of the main consequences of these discrepancies is that some medical students have been becoming more cynical since their entrance into medical education. The open curricula emphasize empathy, alleviating pain and suffering, the importance of trust and fidelity, and that the well-being of patients is one of the most important priorities. The hidden curricula at the same time emphasize objectivity, detachment, caution, and being suspicious against emotions. One of the outcomes of these eventually contradictory tendencies is that the ’wounded healer’ is not a precondition for becoming a healer, like in archaic times, but a by-product of medical education.
