  • Self-Concept as a Correlate of Academic Achievement of Special Needs Students in Kwara State

    Special education has shifted from a position of delivering professional services to students with disabilities to a system that seeks to encompass the broad concept of promoting quality education for students. This study examined the self-concept as correlate of academic achievement of special needs students in Kwara State. The study adopted a descriptive survey research type. Special needs students in the three local government areas in Ilorin, Ilorin South, East and West Local Governments Area constituted the total population for this research.  The researchers designed a questionnaire entitled: self-concept as a correlate of academic achievement of special needs students’ questionnaire” (SCCASNSQ). 200 questionnaire forms were administered. Research questions were answered using mean score, while inferential statistics of mean, standard deviation and Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) were used to test the formulated hypotheses. The finding of the study revealed that academic ability, physical ability, social ability, emotional ability, general self-worth ability and scholastic ability influence self-concept as correlate of academic achievement of special needs students in Kwara State. More so, there was no significant relationship between self-concept and academic achievement of special needs students in Kwara state in Kwara state. There was significant relationship between religion, school type, age and self-concept and academic achievement of special needs students in Kwara State. The findings concluded that while self-concept may not directly influence academic achievement among special needs students in Kwara State, factors such as religion, school type, and age significantly impact both self-concept and academic performance. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended among others that parents and other stakeholders in the education sector should enhance adolescents’ interpersonal relationship by strengthening their physical, social and emotional self-concepts through relevant social skills training.

    Students with special educational needs (SEN) are participants of the Hungarian educational system. The goal of this study is to compare the body type indexes and motoric abilities of SEN students and mainstream students. Sample: n = 160 persons (80 SEN students and 80 mainstream students) from 1-8 grades of elementary school. Method: the survey of body type indexes and motoric abilities physical skills was based on the Hungarian NETFIT system (NETFIT is a Hungarian acronym of the National Unitary Student Fitness Test). Results: much more emphasis should be given to physical education lessons of SEN students because their physique indicators and motoric performances are significantly worse than mainstream pupils’.

  • CHANGING THE NUMBER OF CHILDREN AND STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS IN SCHOOL YEARS 2009/2010 AND 2019/2020

    The goal of the present study is to analyze the changing number of children and students with special educational needs in the 2009/2010 and 2019/2020 school years. Sample: 77 844 children/students in the 2009/2010 school year, and 91 331 children/students in the 2019/2020 school year. Method: Secondary data collection was applied with the data of the Hungarian Central Statistic Office. Descriptive statistics and a chi-square test was used for data analysis. Results: the number of children and students with special educational needs increased: the difference was more than ten thousand people. The results can be used from the teaching of special educators to the support of children with special needs and their teachers, special educators, and families.

  • Effect of Two Instructional (Project And Inquiry ) Strategies on Students’ Achievement in Selected Biological Abstract Concepts

    The purpose of this study was to ascertain how two instructional strategies—project and inquiry—affect students' mastery of particular abstract biological concepts. The study used a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design. 120 SS II Biology students were chosen at random from six coeducational schools located in two Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the state of Kwara. Treatment groups were assigned to participants at random. The Biology Student Achievement Test (r=0.88) and the Teachers' Instructional Guide on Project and Inquiry Strategies were the instruments utilised. Two theories were developed and put to the test at the significance level of 0.05. The intervention had a significant main effect on students' achievement on a subset of selected biological abstract concepts (F(2, 107) =12.061; p<0.05, partial η2 = 0.184), according to an analysis of covariance conducted on the gathered data. The students in the Conventional Strategy (CS) control group have the lowest adjusted mean achievement values (x ̅ = 17.20), whereas the students in the Project Strategy (PS) treatment group 1 have the highest adjusted mean achievement values (x ̅ = 23.21). It is indicated that PS > IS > CS is the order. The mean growth in accomplishment values for male students was higher at 21.94, compared to 17.13 for female students. Project and inquiry methodologies should be implemented in order to raise students' accomplishment in biology's abstract concepts, according to the findings.

  • INVESTIGATING THE WILLINGNESS TO USE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN EDUCATION AMONG STUDENTS OF SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS

    Goal: Artificial intelligence-based systems, tools, and services have penetrated all areas of life, including education. The aim of this study is to find out the views of future special education teachers on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education. Method: In research, we surveyed n= 157 students in special education teachers with a questionnaire survey. The results were evaluated by mathematical statistical analysis using SPSS software.  Within the software, cross-tabulation analysis, χ2 test, and frequency analysis were used. Results: only a very small percentage (18.5%) of the prospective special education teachers had encountered tools based on AI and applications during their previous studies. They will prefer to use AI tools outside classroom activities. There is no significant difference in the willingness to use AI in relation to age, 59.7% of those under 24 years and 65% of those over 24 years consider AI tools necessary in special needs education.  However their knowledge about AI applications, tools, and possibilities is very uncertain and limited, and therefore there is a need for a wide dissemination of AI education.

  • COOPERATION VS. COMPETITION. APPROACHES ON THE INCLUSION OF CHILDREN WITH SEN

    Solving learning tasks, among students, is usually done in the context of an interaction based on competition or cooperation. Either of the two types of interaction - cooperation and competition - has different effects in terms of the students' mutual attitudes, the degree of involvement, and the degree of participation in the performance of school tasks and individual school performance. The success of the school inclusion of students with SEN implies the cooperation between all the factors involved in this process. Special education is a part of the Romanian education system and should support educational programs for pupils with SEN suitable for their harmonious development. We started in our research from the application of a questionnaire to which teachers from Bihor County responded. If, in the preceding article, this working instrument was applied to a number of 163 teachers from mass education, to mixed classes that had in their composition and children with special educational requirements, in this article we extract the data that we have collected from to a number of 63 teachers in special education. The questionnaire comprises a total of 46 items referring to the atmosphere of cooperation and competition and comprises two parts. The first part includes questions regarding seniority in work, educational grade, age, number of the group of students they work with, etc.

     

     

     

  • STUDENTS' ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE USE OF FILM SEQUENCES TO IDENTIFY THE DEVELOPMENTAL CHARACTERISTICS OF PEOPLE WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES

    The current study highlights the attitude of students toward the use of film sequences, as educational resources used in the course of Psychopedagogy of people with intellectual disabilities, in the online learning environment. The participants in the study were students (N = 28) in the 2nd year, who follow the Special Psycho-pedagogy study program. The research method was a questionnaire-based survey. The working tool contains 23 questions, which were developed by the authors for this research. In the introductory part, in addition to the synthesis of the specialized literature, we briefly presented the aspects related to the management of the university course, in a pandemic context, by presenting the ways in which the film sequences were used to achieve the objectives of the discipline. The results of the descriptive study show that students show a positive attitude towards the use of film sequences in teaching, learning, and final assessment activities. Thus, the students consider that the film sequences used in the course activities facilitate the understanding of the theoretical information from the course support, about the particularities in the development of people with intellectual disabilities. Additionally, the film sequences used for assessing knowledge in the final exam took students out of their comfort zone of passively taking the theoretical information and giving an answer during the online assessment tests. The research findings highlight the practical implications and future directions of research to ensure good management of course activities in the online learning environment.

    Stuttering is a disability of tempo and rhythm in the speech that students, special education teachers, and speech therapists face in their daily work. Previously, stuttering has been researched from the perspective of speech therapy and speech therapists. This research is however based on the opinions of the youngsters in question. One percent of the population are considered stutterers as per Guitar’s (1998) theory — which would mean that in Estonia, approximately 1,500 students are stutterers. Students spend a large and valuable part of their day and leisure time at school. It is therefore essential that teachers and advisors are aware and competent in providing support to stuttering students as needed. These students do not receive enough support and attention, as stuttering is considered a disability that does not distract teachers from doing their job. It can be assumed that teachers do not change their methods and systems in evaluating a stuttering student. It is nevertheless crucial that the student with the impediment feels safe and good at school and can express their thoughts in speech. The aim of this research is to find out how stuttering students cope in their school environment. The research also focuses on the experiences of teachers and support specialists in order to understand their cooperation when assisting a stuttering student.

  • ROMA UNIVERSITY STUDENTS' IDEAS ON THE CHOICE OF PARTNERS:

    Finding the right partner can improve the individual’s financial situation, help him/her achieve his/her goals, and support his/her mental health. It may also have an impact on the integration of Roma partners into the majority of society. Roma young people studying in higher education may have different options of choosing a partner than their (Roma) lower-educated peers. The cost of further education is often the lack of early marriage, which is common in the traditional Roma community, while the benefit can be the development of a wider network of contacts by getting to know university colleagues. In our research, we examined the choice of a partner of a special group of Roma university students, the Roma college students concerning their ideas about this and their practical implementation. The study is based on the EVS (European Value Survey) questionnaire on relationships filled in by the respondents and structured life path interviews (N=186). Based on the survey, the college students included in the study did not consider the origin of their partner to be relevant, while in practice they preferred a similar partner related to the origin and education. The Roma college can also function as a field for choosing partners, and many of the students have chosen their partners from here. In Roma colleges, students are placed in a peer community that supports them through further education. Among their peers, they can even find a partner who is similar to them not only in his/her origin but also in his/her education.

    The ground of our study is institutional research which refers to the University of Debrecen Faculty of Education for Children and Special Educational Needs. The respondents were second-year full-time students. Our aim was to reveal what features this faculty’s students have if we compare our data to nationwide or regional empirical findings.  Our empirical findings have pointed out the disadvantageous features of our students (lower rate of parents with a degree, higher rate of students from villages, etc.). These phenomena can be explained with the special social background of the training courses, the criteria of attendance, and the geographic location of the institution.

  • Evaluation of Teachers’ Views on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Education of Students with Special Education Needs

    The aim of the research is to determine the teachers’ views on the use of artificial intelligence in the education of students with special education needs. This research was conducted using the case study design, one of the qualitative research methods. It was made to examine in depth how teachers approach the idea of using artificial intelligence in education, what they think about integrating artificial intelligence technology into classroom practices, and what kind of suggestions and expectations they have regarding the development of the use of artificial intelligence. The study group consisted of 54 teachers working in the provinces of Bursa, Çanakkale, and Istanbul in the first semester of the 2024-2025 academic year, determined according to the convenience (easily accessible) sampling method, one of the purposeful sampling types. Data were collected from teachers from different branches and with different years of experience through a semi-structured interview form developed by the researchers. Content analysis technique was applied in the data analysis process, and the findings were classified as codes, categories, and themes.

    The Special Treatment Journal was launched in 2014 to provide a platform for national and international publications on children/students/persons with special educational needs, learning, and behavioral difficulties and talents. Today, the 'Special Treatment' is one of the respected journals on the national and international academic lists (as evidenced by the publication of nearly 400 papers in recent years by 313 major national and international authors). In this paper, we would like to express thanks and gratitude to all those who have contributed to the publication and survival of the journal over such a long period.

  • TEACHING GERMAN IN NYÍREGYHÁZA TO STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS

    The present paper deals with the issues of teaching a second language to school-aged children with SEN in Nyíregyháza, Hungary. In our research, we made semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions featuring 25 children with Special Educational Needs in grades 7 and 8 in order to gain more information about their opinion and attitudes concerning German lessons at school, which in turn might help to unify the material and/or the methods. We also contacted the children’s parents (25) to fill out a questionnaire about their impressions and opinions with regard to their children’s German learning experience at school. Finally, we asked the two teachers to paint a broader picture of teaching German to children with SEN. The research took place in spring 2020 in Nyíregyháza. We did our research in Viktor Göllesz Vocational School, Skills Development School, Student Hostel, and Integrated Special Educational Methodological Institution as well as in Gusztáv Bárczi Primary School, Skills Development School, Student Hostel, and Integrated Special Educational Methodological Institution. To carry out our research, we asked for the parents’ and the head teachers’ ethical consent. Our experience underlines that all the participants in the teaching process feel that there is a need for unification. It would be much easier for all parties to have a German coursebook written for students aged 13-16 with SEN. Based on the answers of the language teachers, we came to the conclusion that they pay attention to individual development and playful, communicative language teaching, even though it is challenging to teach German to children with SEN, as they often have difficulties in their mother tongue.

  • Health Risks for Students Requiring Special Treatment in Relation to Their Teeth and Mouth

    Mapping the oral health of pupils with special needs is a missing research goal, and our research team focused on equal access to health in this objective. We conducted our studies among students of the Miskolc Éltes Mátyás EGYMI and among patients attending a day-care dental clinic under general anaesthesia in a private health care institution in Miskolc. We searched for data on dental procedures performed in 2023 in the same-day surgery department of the University of Debrecen Clinical Center Dental Clinic of the Department of Dental Surgery under Anesthesia (DEKK) among disabled patients from our previous studies.  Sample: 104 persons (mean age: 10 ± 4.9 years) had their dental screening and diagnosis recorded in 2024 at the EGYMI in Miskolc. The number of children with special needs attending anaesthesia dentistry in 2024 is 28, with a BNO code and recording of dental interventions. The DEKK patient turnover in 2023 was 301. The total number of patients was 115 children and 186 adults, 111 women and 190 men. Result: the most common BNO diagnosis was autism spectrum disorder in all three institutions. The results of the dental examination showed a high number of cavities and a high percentage of gingivitis in all groups studied. During the procedures performed under anaesthesia, 42 tooth extractions were performed in Miskolc and 768 in Debrecen. 47 tooth fillings were made in the remaining dentition in Miskolc and 587 in Debrecen. The preventive activity for the maintenance of gingivitis is tartar removal; the number of this intervention is significantly lower than the number of tooth extractions in the present examined samples. In Miskolc, 3 cases of tooth scaling were performed, and in Debrecen, 87 cases. This is also a preventive intervention in children to prevent dental caries.    Conclusion: the oral health of this population is significantly worse than the Hungarian average; therefore, prevention is of particular importance in this group, both in terms of dental education and in terms of preventive activities that can be carried out in practice. In this educational work, both teachers and social workers can play a role. The problem is exacerbated by the precarious nature of patient pathways in the public sector.

    The study analyzes the possibilities of career planning of young people with Special Educational Needs in Hungary. This topic seems to be especially relevant, as the process of transforming the vocational education system in Hungary (Vocational Education 4.0, 2020) makes it even clearer that the vocational school appears to be the most achievable secondary educational goal for certain groups of students with Special Educational Needs. Skill workers trained in vocational schools could appear in the labor market as potential employees, however, partly because obstacle-free and automatic employment do not always happen after leaving secondary school. Career planning is a possible solution to the problem outlined. The career planning can be supplemented and intertwisted with the preparation of the Individual Transition Plan for young people with Special Educational Needs.     Animal assistance used among university students is not unknown, numerous foreign examples prove its valid existence. The application aimed at university students appeared in the United States of America, but nowadays it is used in many countries around the world. The emergence of assistance dogs in higher education is related to the scientific interest aimed at discovering and measuring the causes of the positive effects experienced during the use of assistance animals. Simultaneously with the introduction of animal assistance training at the University of Debrecen Faculty of Education for Children and Special Educational Needs, the university student sensitization program began in 2021, within the framework of which students can meet the assistance dog serving on the university campus on a daily basis. The first university student sensitizer dog of the country has a multifaceted task, it not only performs tasks in the field of animal-assisted activity but also fulfills a socialization role with its presence, helping many to rethink their ideas about keeping animals. The study presents this socialization program.

    According to today's social norms, within the framework of an eco-school, our aim is to educate students who can recognize environmental hazards and are able to prevent the deepening of the environmental crisis. We have assumed that the possibilities of environmental education outside the classroom can be integrated into the complex system of conductive education, even for children with special needs. I would like to highlight those activities that trigger the flow experience for our students, helping create an internal motivation for all activities that serve the interests of environmental education. The changes also show in the increased number of such programs. Even though we are a segregated school, environmental education is still very decisive in our institution and we try to convey this view outside our walls.

    The researchers call Montessori's pedagogy developer or development pedagogy. In the past decade, in Hungary, it appeared as a development pedagogy in the pedagogical practice. The conductive education is a special, complex pedagogical method [6] because it takes into consideration special educational needs in planning and implementation. We can view Mária Montessori's method as a development pedagogical method because it's suitable for children with special educational needs. Her pedagogical work began with children with intellectual disabilities. The Montessori development method has not yet occurred in conductive education. With our research, we wanted to broaden the use of the Montessori method in the practice of special education and development pedagogy. We wanted to confirm the similarity and difference of the holistic approach of the two doctor-pedagogues. It's explicable with Pető's holistic approach, why didn't entrust the development of perception, speech, motion, and communication difficulties to people working in different places and time. We introduced the Montessori conductive educational practice experimentally in the semesters of 2000-2003 and 2007-2008, in accordance with the student's college education. The purpose of the program was to demonstrate the practical application of the elements of the two methods and their coordinated operation.

    The aim of the study is to highlight the attitude of the students (N=72) from Pedagogy of Primary and Preschool Education Program (pre-service teacher), from first and third years of study, related to how they want, as future teachers, to develop pupils’ learning skills in the inclusive classroom by adopting certain behavioral management of pupils with special needs. The working tool used is the Behavior and Instructional Management Scale, developed by Martin and Sass (2010). The comparative analysis of the results obtained according to the year of study captures the existence of statistically significant differences in the aspect of the management of the behavior in the classroom, both in traditional and inclusive classes, during the lessons, with higher averages for the pre-service teachers of 3rd year. Also, pre-service teachers from the 3rd year of study have a higher level of expectations for implementing the rules in school activities with pupils with special needs, compared to the pre-service teachers of the 1st year, which draws attention to the importance of pedagogical practical stage in primary school.

    This study focuses on the integrated-inclusive education of the students with special educational needs from the side of two 'new' groups of teachers. After outlining the specific situation religious and music teachers perform in education a detailed analysis follows, which focuses on the facts of how these people see their own knowledge, difficulties, and needs in inclusive and integrated education. To assess their situation their results are compared to a so-called ’control group’. The study group is formed by the ’classic’ actors of public education, the teachers who teach general subjects.

    Nowadays teaching children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) is at the centre of attention. However, the field is really new in language pedagogy and, due to the students’ different abilities, a common methodology has yet to be developed. As a result, teachers’ creativity plays an even more important role, since they rely heavily on their own teaching experience. We will dive deeper into this topic in our two papers built upon each other, both dealing with the issues of teaching a second language to school-aged children with SEN. This present paper is about teaching German students with SEN at a Hungarian and an international level. Our research involves an international overview of several European countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Romania, Poland, Russia, Estonia, and Italy). We contacted specific institutions in those countries and asked for their experience in teaching a second language to children with SEN. It also includes the language learning characteristics of children with SEN as well as the Hungarian rules governing their language teaching.

  • The Evolution of Internet Use and Cyberbullying in the Lives of Child-Ren with Learning Disabilities - Based on the Experiences of a Qualitative Pilot Study

    As the Internet spreads, its disadvantages are also becoming more and more widespread, alongside its advantages. In this study, we examine the Internet usage habits of 14-18 year-old students with learning disabilities using a qualitative method, by asking the opinions of the teachers and special education teachers (n=8) who teach them. In the pilot study, we explore how and to what extent school and online bullying appears in the lives of students, and who is more often affected by such attacks. Based on the results of our research, according to the teachers, children with learning disabilities encounter offline bullying more often at school than online, with verbal and physical abuse being the most common. Gender, type of disability, specific characteristics, and family background are determinants of victimization. However, due to the small sample size in the pilot study, the results obtained are only of an attention-grabbing nature, and draw attention to the necessity of further research into the phenomenon.
