Health Consciousness. Health Education as a Special Case of Social Responsibility
43-59Views:543Aim: In 2017, the infant death was .0039 and 0.3% of them was caused by cot death. The only chance for these infants to survive is early recognition and immediate intervention by laymen. Consequently, parents and carers are to be trained. Our research examined the efficiency of education into this emergency situation. Our aim was to highlight the key role of education which can promote health consciousness.
Methods: Efficiency was examined in two target groups. Traditional education was provided for one of the groups, while phantom simulators were used in the other one. Questionnaires and interviews revealed the respondents’ experience (n=421). The results were analysed with statistical methods.
Results: Teaching with simulation proved to be more efficient and popular than traditional education.
Conclusion: Our results reflect that simulation based education is highly needed. Education on prevention, which teaches the basics of health education, paves the way to health consciousness and health behaviour. -

57-78Views:306In the current strategic documents focusing on improving the health status of the Hungarian population, the implementation of community health promotion programs to prevent diseases affecting children is highly recommended. School health promotion plays a key role in terms of the health of the younger generations and the health of the staff of educational institutions. That is why the Health Promotion Office (HPO) in the Nyíregyháza district treats the health promotion activities implemented at the school setting as a priority area of its work, which supports the implementation of the comprehensive school health promotion (TIE) concept as a EFI task. The purpose of this manuscript is to present the magnitude of the work carried out by HPO for school-aged children over the past five years, in the period between 2018 and 2022. The analysis of the data was based on HPO's self-edited event summary. The Office, which started operating in March 2018, served 29,076 clients with school-based health promotion community programs until December 2022 and provided opportunities for children attending educational institutions in the Nyíregyháza district to improve their health and raise health consciousness on 1,070 occasions. The employees of HPO developed and implemented 55 programs with different professional content, which primarily reflected the needs, and secondarily the local needs. The recorded data are not suitable for measuring the long-term effectiveness of the intervention, but it shows the magnitude of the work carried out in the field.

Health state and health education
138-162Views:810In our study, we present the results of a survey, presented among the roma local group living in settlement conditions; concerning their health state, health education and health awareness behaviour. The study explored the quality of life of these disadvantaged groups in several dimensions. According to our results health state and health education need a multilevel intervention, focused on emphasising the preventive functions of the primary health care; in order to gain a long term, positive change among the related social groups.

Methods: Our study, based on data from a Hungarian panel survey, examines health literacy levels with a focus on the impact of age, educational attainment, income, and digital access.
Results: Results show that individuals with lower education, poorer financial status, and limited digital access face greater difficulties in interpreting health information.
Summary: Social inequalities in health literacy underline the need for clear communication and targeted educational interventions to promote health equity and improve individuals' ability to make informed health-related decisions. -

37-69Views:120The development and transformation of vocational teacher education grounded in university traditions has been analysed by several Hungarian researchers (Ballér 1991; Katona 2015; Orosz 2003; Patyi 2021). There are also studies that trace the evolution of individual programmes—such as engineering teacher education (Holik, Nemes-Németh and Sanda 2021; Horváth 2013), agricultural engineering teacher education (Surányi 2018), and economics teacher education (Antal and Baksa 2013) from their inception to the present day. Beyond historical and structural analyses, research has also addressed the methodological and curricular characteristics of these programmes (Benedek and Szabóné Berki 2011). However, only a limited number of studies have examined the recruitment base of applicants entering vocational teacher training (Szabóné Berki 2015; Engler et al. 2017; Máté-Szabó 2019). More recently, scholarship in the field has shifted towards VET-pedagogical perspectives and methodological renewal (Rádli 2011; Tóth 2012; Szabóné Berki 2015; Tordai 2015; Holik 2016), as well as institutional case studies (Bacsa-Bán 2014; Tóth 2011; Nagyné 2024). The aim of this study is to provide a comprehensive overview of the sociocultural background, prior educational pathways, and learning motivations of students enrolled in Hungarian vocational teacher education. Our research examined 215 students across four study programmes: agricultural engineering teacher, health teacher, economics teacher, and engineering teacher education. Findings show that vocational teacher training predominantly enrols adult learners who typically possess multiple degrees, substantial professional experience, and a stable family background. The study also explores geographical access to programmes, students’ satisfaction, and their attitudes towards learning. Regarding learning motivation, two key dimensions were identified: emotional–self-realisation motives and external, instrumental drivers. Results indicate that family status exerts a significant influence on intrinsic motivation; single students demonstrate substantially stronger knowledge-acquisition and self-development intentions compared to married or divorced peers.

15-36Views:103The study examines the recruitment trends in Hungarian vocational teacher education between 2016 and 2025, focusing on five key programmes: agricultural engineering teacher, health sciences teacher, economics teacher, engineering teacher, and social studies teacher education. Using quantitative time series analysis based on the publicly available felvi.hu database, the research explores changes in the number of applicants and admitted students, trends in first-choice applications, and shifts in gender distribution among students. The results indicate a general but varying degree of growth after 2022, which was particularly strong in the fields of economics, agriculture, and engineering. Distinct patterns emerge across the examined disciplines: while health and social studies programmes remain female-dominated, engineering teacher education continues to be characterized by a high proportion of male students. Overall, the 2016–2025 period reflects a partial restoration of prestige in vocational teacher education.

108-133Views:564This study presents the results of mapping health status, health behavior and nutritional habits onto a group of aging adults. The data was collected in 2021 using a questionnaire with 684 individuals at the age and over the age of 50. Results indicate that one third of the respondents suffer from some chronic disease and that one out of four is overweight. The health awareness of the group was good. Health literacy showed a significant correlation with education, gender, subjective health, and the presence of a chronic disease.

Academic risks of students characterized by risk-behaviour
63-78Views:287The aim of our study is to reveal the effectiveness and efficiency of students with different health behaviors. We were curious about the differences between students with different health-care (risk, inactive and health-conscious) students in the studied dimensions of educational performance in Hungary in the Northern Great Plain region, as well as in the Transcarpathia, Highlands, Vojvodina, Par-tium and Transylvania (IESA 2015; N = 2017). In line with our preliminary assumptions, we can see that there are more students at risk who attend less than half of the lectures, one or two or even half of their exams have not been completed, and less than one hour per lesson, while the latter is the least characteristic of for health-conscious students. They are making great efforts to meet their serious study load, but there are more people who are unable to cope with these difficulties in the first round and have failed their examinations. In this way, health-conscious behavior does not constitute supporting factor in the effectiveness of the study.

22-31Views:206This study presents some historical aspects of health sciences through the health education school book written in the 16th century for Transylvanian Saxon pupils. Paulus Kyr, doctor of Brașov (Kronstadt), a town in the Carpathian Arch, sums up the medical knowledge of his time for his pupils in a booklet called Sanitatis Studium. The booklet did not reach international fame, but serves with curiosities in cultural and health science history about the lifestyle of his time, and, at the same time, reveals aspects of the Renaissance’s reception in Transylvania. Kyr’s work has not lost anything from its topicality first and foremost due to the fact that appropriate lifestyle is being perceived as the key to preserving good health. This study reconsiders Kyr’s recommendations from the health sciences’ perspective of our days.

Situational picture of the educational attainment of people living in settlements in Nyíregyháza
55-69Views:321In our study we examine the education of people living in two separate settlements in Nyíregyháza focussing on the type and level of completed school(s) and qualification, what they think of their future studies and getting a qualification so that similarities and differences between the two settlements can be compared. In the analysis, we present data gained in the Husar and Eastern settlements and alsocompare them with data on education from the Quality of Life Research 2018 in Nyíregyháza and the 2016 Micro Census Research by KSH. One-variable and two-variable methods were used to analyze data. Our results show that in terms of education people living in settlements lag far behind the town, county, regional and national data.

Lifestyle and socio-economic inequalities in diabetes prevalence in Madadeni Township, South Africa
5-21Views:277Rapid urbanization, social inequalities, sedentary lifestyles, and unhealthy eating habits are contributing factors to the increasing prevalence of diabetes in South Africa. Data was collected from 99 residents in Madadeni, South Africa. The analysis was conducted using Microsoft Excel and the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) V.29. The sample had a mean age of 67.4±9.4 years, with 73.74% females and 26.26% males. Majority had Grade 10 as their highest level of education (31.31%) and were retired (51.52%). The average number of household members was 6.35±2.57. The average estimated total income was R5681.82±R2585.73 per month, with 2.13±0.92 members contributing to household income. Majority (72.72%) had T2DM, while 27.27% had T1DM. The quantitative results highlight the importance of increasing awareness and providing health education to empower the affected population with self-management knowledge.

5-17Views:1798The study examines the relationship between sport and depression among athletes in leisure and competition. A total of 436 people completed a questionnaire measuring the factors examined (Beck-Depression Questionnaire Abbreviated Version), of which 139 responders were leisure time athletes and 297 professional athletes. The aim of my study was to map out whether sport appeared as a protective factor for young people engaged in leisure sports, and whether the protective effect of sport on competitive athletes could prevail over the various symptoms of depression. Furthermore, whether there is a correlation between gender, education, occupation and consumption of legal drugs and depression. From the results we can see that the depression value of athletes at competition level is higher than that of the athletes in leisure sports. In addition, I was able to experience a significantly higher depression value among the people aged between 18-20 than those aged 30 and over. I also found a significant difference in terms of gender in favour of women. People with a low level of education and those who do not have a full-time job have witnessed more depressive symptoms on themselves. By examining the consumption of legal drugs, I could show a correlation between alcohol and depression.

Income situations, income conditions among the residents of two settlements
45-54Views:350The monthly net income of settlement residents is much lower than in the town of Nyíregyháza or nationwide. Poor employment stands in the background, which naturally stems from the education level of settlement residents. Almost 80% of them completed 8 grades of primary school only or even fewer, while the number and rate of those who gained any qualification is very low. When examining income disparities in Nyíregyháza, it can be seen that the majority of settlement residents, 76.6%, belong to the 2 lowest deciles, and the rate of income poor also exceeds what is measured in the town or across the country. Considering the 60% of median income, 78% of the residents are poor. Regarding the costs of living, housing expenses cause the biggest trouble and many households have been struggling with arrears.

92-102Views:696Previous research has highlighted that the frequency of regular exercise decreases linearly with age. There is, therefore, a need for young people to develop healthy lifestyle habits for themselves. In the course of our research, a literature review of Matarka (Hungarian Periodicals Table of Contents Database), MTMT (Hungarian Scientific Bibliograhy), and publications in the archives of DEENK (University and National Library of the University of Debrecen) was conducted to find those studies that examine the sports habits of Hungarian university students. A total of 22 studies were identified. The articles concerned 10 universities. The analysis found that although a significant proportion of university students engage in sports, the conscious integration of health education into students’ lives is recommended.

Situational picture of the employment of Roma people residing in settlements in Nyíregyháza
32-44Views:582In our study we present the employment situation of people residing in the Husar and Eastern settlements which can be found in Nyíregyháza. This study is focussing on one aspect from the many dimensions examined by the research into the life quality of Roma people residing in settlements. As expected, our results revealed that the residents of these settlements are at a huge disadvantage in employment. The extent of employment is mainly influenced by low education, the high number of children and their attitude towards working. According to our results, 70% of the respondents have been unemployed before and 49.8% of them are unemployed at the moment.

Research at the Husar and Eastern settlements in Nyíregyháza – Methodology of the research
8-18Views:499This study contains the methodology description of settlement research carried out in Nyíregyháza. A description of geographical location and distinctiveness of the two surveyed places, Husar and Eastern settlements, is followed by an introduction of the main block of the questionnaire used in our research. The surveyed sample is described by its geographical distribution then by the main socio-demographic indicators. 271 households were examined at the two locations by questioners. 69% of the respondents were women, 31% of them men, the average age was 43.5, and rate of those with completed 8-grade primary school was prominent. The majority of the respondents lived in cohabitation or were unmarried. It is estimated that our data collection covered the 25-35% of the population in the two settlements. Regarding gender, age, level of education, marital status and economic activity there were no statistical differences between the two settlements.

Changes in the main dimensions of quality of life in Nyíregyháza
20-64Views:367The Quality-of-Life Research Group of the University of Debrecen Faculty of Health Sciences has been examining various dimensions of the quality of life of the residents of Nyíregyháza through regular data surveys since 2008. The results from the most recent study completed in 2023/2024 focused on indicators that fundamentally determine the quality of life - economic activity and employment, income situation and income inequalities, housing conditions, social problems and support systems. This approach was taken because the research group interprets the quality of life as a complex concept and considers these indicators to be decisive from a sociological perspective.
Even though the proportion of the employees is very high in the city, significant differences were found based upon education and the perception of working conditions. Employment is a determined factor in income and while the average income has increased in recent years, the values of income inequality indicators also show an increase.
There has been improvement in housing both in quantity and quality for those living in privately owned apartments. On the other hand, those who do not have sufficient resources to purchase a home, have to face increasing rental prices and a decreasing number of municipal rental apartments. One out of five households have household expense burdened by debt.
Regarding support systems, this research shows that the poor and the less educated have smaller and less resource-rich networks than those of the better-off and more educated. Material and relational exclusion are typically intertwined, which can further exacerbate the negative effects of social exclusion. -
A phenomenological study of the lived experiences of teenage mothers in coping with complications of pregnancy in Khaddamari Ward, Jere Local Government Area, Borno State
73-84Views:285Objectives: Teenage pregnancy is a world-wide phenomenon and a public health issue so our aim was to identify the contributing factors, and to study perception, complications, effects, challenges and coping mechanisms.
Method: An explorative qualitative research design, snowball sampling, was used. Ten respondents were interviewed using an interview guide in Khaddamari Ward, Jere L.G.A. of Borno State.
Results: The major contributing factor to teenage pregnancy is ignorance and lack of proper sex education both at home and school. Few responses listed traditional roles, cultural expectations, using drugs and alcohol, age discrepancy in relationships, socio-economic factors, sexual coercion and abuse. Most of them perceived fear, guilt and stigmatization and only a few of them said they were excited, proud and accepted. Anemia, preterm labour, cephalo-pelvic disproportion, obstructed labour and vesico-vaginal fistula were common complications. Almost all of them dropped out of school.
Conclusion: Based on these findings of the study, a collaborative effort by all stakeholders involved should be employed in combating the complications of teenage pregnancy.

A lakhatási mobilitás hatása hátrányos helyzetű családok életmódjára
132-153Views:349In our research, we examined the impact of an integration program for catch-up purposes in a small settlement, which also provides housing mobility, on the lifestyle of the disadvantaged families affected by the intervention. During the interview research supplemented by document analysis, dimensions that determine lifestyle we were examined, such as the physical characteristics of the apartment, income situation, labor market situation, attitude to education, health status, and mental state. Based on the results, we found a positive correlation in several examined dimensions between the lifestyle change of the families involved in the research and moving out of the segregated area. At the same time, it can also be stated that housing mobility implemented within the framework of the catch-up project may not be able to have the expected effect and achieve the set goal in itself.

Relationships in settlements

Regarding strong ties, we examine confidential network, changes in the number of friends then we examine weak ties, too. This is a descriptive writing that presents the examined dimensions through socio-demographic variables like gender, age and education.
