The Hungarian National Core Curricula gives primacy to the development of abilities and the practical application of knowledge. The task of the training programme is primarily to prepare teacher trainees for the teaching and educating profession. As teachers, they are going to plan, organize, help, guide, control and evaluate the learning of mathematics of individuals and groups of students from the age of 6 to 10 (12), and cultivate their mathematical skills, thinking and positive attitude towards any mathematical activities. In order to train educators who are able to meet the above requirements on high standard, it is necessary to update the teacher training programme based on the trainees' preliminary knowledge and motivation level.
The key to learn about the child's mind and achieve conscious development is the systematization of factual knowledge and methodological awareness. The modern, flexible approach to subject pedagogy, based on pedagogy, psychology and epistemology, qualifies trainees to educate learners who understand and like mathematics. Therefore, it is essential to develop the trainees' positive approach to mathematics and arouse their demand for continuous professional improvement. (Programme of the four-year primary school teacher training, 1995.)
In our research we are looking for ways of ascertaining the starting parameters which have influence on the planning of the studies of mathematics and subject pedagogy. In this article we introduce a questionnaire by the means of which we collected information on the trainees' attitude and its changing towards mathematics. With the help of the analysis of the answers we paint a picture of the ELTE TÓFK (Eötvös Loránd University, Faculty of Elementary and Nursery School Teacher's Training) third year students' attitude to the subject, and we compare it to the tendencies noticed in the mass education. The energy invested in learning is influenced by the assumption of the relevance and importance of the subjects. Therefore we considered it also our task to reveal. Besides the students' attitude toward mathematics and their assumption about their own competence we have collected data also on their performance in the subject. Summarising the research results we show the advantages of the questionnaire, and summarise the observations which would indicate need for methodological changes in the mathematics teacher training.

The article starts with a short introduction to finite (K,L)-geometry. Then a lot of counting propositions is given and proved. Finally the famous theorem of Miquel is investigated in classical and in finite geometry. At the end of the article there is a call to all readers: Don't forget (finite) geometry and don't forget the outstanding geometer Prof. Dr. F. Kárteszi!

A research has been organised with three Colleges taking part during the academic year of 2002-03. These institutions were
    • The Teacher's Training College of Baja
    • Eszerházy Károly College of Eger
    • The College of Nyíregyháza
The aim of the research was to reveal differences between results of students studying in the traditional way and of students using e-learning.
The survey has been carried out among students of PE (physical education). A distance educational programme (Basics of Gymnastics) developoed before launching the survey served as basis for the survey [5]. The results of the research were first presented at the Agria-Média Conference in 2004. After analysing the results the findings were presented at the 3rd International Conference on Education and Information Systems in Orlando, Florida in July 2005.
This paper tries to reveal the structure of the e-learning programme, the environment of the research and the latest results found after the final analyses of the research.

The question to which we were seeking was: how can we reveal the students' strategies and mental process by following their work precisely and by finding out what correlation these have with their efficiency. Our aim was to understand the factors behind of students' achievement. We tried to follow up the process of problem solving by looking at the number of wrong turnings.

Hereinafter we are going to show that Bolyai Janos was preoccupied by the problem of the Duplication of the Cube, which was unknown until now by the rich Bolyai-literature.
This problem was solved using the Parabola, the Hyperbola and the Cissoide already in the ancient times. The Cissoide was created by Diocles especially for the constuction of the Duplication of the Cube without Compass and Straightedge. The hereinafter "deciphered" document of Bolyai was written during his university studies. In his study he presents the solutions discovered by then and tries to give a new one. We transcribed his notations to the present-day use and complemented it where it was necessary.
The mathematics historically background and the explication is very detailed described by Van derWaerden in Erwachende Wissenschaft [7], which is to find on English, German and Hungarian, too. That's because we dispense with this [8].
  • Levels of students' understanding on infinity

Here we report some results of a two-year study for grades 5-6 and 7-8 (during the academic years 2001-03). The study included a quantitative survey for approximately 150 Finnish mathematics classes out of which 10 classes were selected to a longitudinal part of the study. Additionally, 40 students from these classes participated also a qualitative study. This paper will focus on students' understanding of infinity and the development of that understanding. The results show that most of the students did not have a proper view of infinity but that the share of able students grew, as the students got older.

The aim of this paper is to offer some possible ways of solving linear equations, using manipulative tools, in which the "−" sign is found in front of an algebraic fraction which has a binomial as a numerator. It is used at 8th grade.

This study is based on the work of the METE (Mathematics Education Traditions of Europe Project) team. Following a short introduction of the project, its theoretical background, methods and research design are presented in the next three sections. In the 4th section the tools developed by the METE team for qualitative and quantitative analysis of the collected data are discussed in details. The 5th section contains some personal remarks about using these tools. The 6th section presents the main results of the project, followed by a summary of the project's educational and theoretical significance.

Psychological theories of prototypes are put forward by mathematical modelling. Some didactical consequences are discussed on the background of this analysis. By the help of an example (classification of convex quadrangles) hints are given for didactical interpretations of actual models of cognitive psychology dealing with problems of constructing prototypes.

In his paper [12] S. S. Ryshkov gave the group of integral automorphisms of some quadratic forms (according to Dade [6]). These groups can be considered as maximal point groups of some four-dimensional translation lattices in E^4. The maximal reflection group of each point group, its fundamental domain, then the reflection group in the whole symmetry group of the lattice and its fundamental domain will be discussed. This program will be carried out first on group T. G. Maxwell [9] raised the question whether group T was a reflection group. He conjectured that it was not. We proved that he had been right. We shall answer this question for other groups as well. Finally we shall give the location of the considered groups in the tables of monograph [4]. We hope that our elementary method will be useful in studying linear algebra and analytic geometry. Futhermore, 4-dimensional geometry with some visualisation helps in better understanding important concepts in higher-dimensional mathematics, in general.

  • New style in teaching word processing

Teaching word processing is confined to looking through some menus and showing some functions of a word processor program, although technology presents just a small part of forming layouts. This fact causes that people who are writing documents spend a lot of time by trying to form, e.g., title pages or inner pages.
The present paper deals with a design of an online course on word processing that fits better the needs of many users. The online course is designed for teaching (LA)TEX by leading the students to the technical issues of the typesetting system through layout and grammar rules: demonstrates the most important basic recommendations of typography and grammar rules through samples, and shows how to program the currently displayed layout in the (LA)TEX programming languages. This methodology suits better the common working habit, and can be a useful help in word processing documents.

In 2001 the Informatics Points Competition of the Mathematics Journal for Secondary School Students (KÖMAL) was restarted [1]. The editors set themselves an aim to make the formerly mere programming competition a bit more varied. Therefore, every month there has been published a spreadsheet problem, a part of which was related to combinatorics. This article is intended to discuss the above mentioned problems and the solutions given to them at competitions. We will prove that traditional mathematical and programming tasks can be solved with a system developed for application purposes when applying a different way of thinking.
