  • Some aspects of teaching the technology of designing and planning information systems in health care

    In this article, we use the well-known ideas of technology in designing of new information systems in health care. We explain the principle that "making a health care application" "is more than writing a program", "it requires a strong co-operation and continuous contact" between the system analysts and users. The concept of the information system must contain the work of the whole system, which means that the planning and designing process should focus on the services, which really support the customer's functions. It has to be compatible with the earlier information systems based on several decade's experience. In this paper we use the most important elements of system theory. First of all we explain why it is important to take into account the behaviour of those, who operate the information system, and also their habits and way of thinking when planning then information system. We emphasise that it is importance to overview the whole information system and its functionality because it is a major aspect of the system planning.
    This paper can be used in university courses especially in teaching SDM, SSADM, Martin, etc. technologies for information system analysts, program designers and programmers.
  • Information System’s experiences of EGERFOOD project making use of it in the education of the database management

    We present in this article the background of a developed food safety tracking system searched and formed in the Regional Knowledge Centre of Eszterházy Károly College, the requirements following from this, and by way of the requirements towards the information system appearing expectations. The development of the consumer centre system is a complex task which provides fast and cost-effective information for consumers, food producers and concerned authorities. It accomplishes severe expectations of the tracking system in connection with data security and encryption beside all this. We demonstrate in this article that forming of database model why we chose the general model. We also demonstrate what kind of SQL server we chose for buffer servers and central data warehouse. We wish to support our choosing with the result of done efficiency examinations. It is important viewpoint what kind of database planning principles we base these examinations on and how we match them to the requirements of the system. As software engineers took part in the development effectively from the first minute of the planning of the system, we can examine with what this project work was able to raise students' qualification and knowledge in addition to the general curricular substance.

    Computers, informatics, and information technology have an ever-increasing role in the establishment and spread of new educational forms and methods. The role of e-learning as a new educational model is increasing in the world of computer networks, because of a widespread access to the net and a growing demand for learning beside work.
    Technological elements of e-learning can be separated as Learning Management System, authoring system, course material and a browser. Learning Management System is the software package that creates the structure of the whole educational process: course organisation, course material presentation, tracking student work, recording results, and the completion of the program.
    This publication shows examples of Learning Management Systems used in Hungarian higher education. Summarizing and systematizing expectations and demands expressed in connection with learning management systems, the present work tries to help the reader orientate on an ever-expanding market.
  • Facilitating class attendance to improve student achievements

    Many studies have revealed that attendance is strongly associated with students' achievements, and have proposed different strategies to improve students' attendance. However, there are few studies investigating how to efficiently take students' attendance – the key component to improve students' attendance. Taking attendance manually is inefficient since it will consume part of the limited class time. This paper describes the design and the implementation of an online attendance system that is currently used in classes at West Virginia University and California University of Pennsylvania. Examples of the system are provided online. Implementation codes of the system are shared, which can be used to teach computer science courses such as Web Programming or Client-Server Script Languages.
  • Development of classification module for automated question generation framework

    Automatic question generation is in the focus of recent researches which includes bordering disciplines like education, text mining, knowledge-engineering. The elaborated system generates multi-choice questions from textbooks without using an external semantic database. One of the base modules of the system is the classification module defining the extracted word. This paper describes modules of the framework including a detailed analysis of the classification part. We show the operability of the elaborated system through a practical test.

    New or rediscovered results presented in this paper are the results of the analysis of the problem sets used in the two-tier system secondary school final examination in mathematics, a system that was introduced in Hungary in 2005.
    Many of the revealed problem arise in connection with misunderstanding the text of the problems. Causes of misinterpretation can be either that the text is lacking some important information, or that it should be interpreted not in word-to-word manner.
    Theses and their argumentations presented here refer partly on the new types of problems (tests, non-standard mathematical contents), and partly on improvement of learning-teaching process in topics of equations and approximations.
  • Teaching puzzle-based learning: development of transferable skills

    While computer science and engineering students are trained to recognise familiar problems with known solutions, they may not be sufficiently prepared to address novel real-world problems. A successful computer science graduate does far more than just program and we must train our students to reach the required levels of analytical and computational thinking, rather than hoping that it will just 'develop'. As a step in this direction, we have created and experimented with a new first-year level course, Puzzle-based Learning (PBL), that is aimed at getting students to think about how to frame and solve unstructured problems. The pedagogical goal is increase students' mathematical awareness and general problem solving skills by employing puzzles, which are educational, engaging, and thought provoking. In this paper we continue sharing our experiences in teaching such a course. Whereas a brief discussion on our pedagogical objectives were covered in the first paper together with the material of the first of two lectures on pattern recognition, this follow-up paper presents the material of the second of two lectures, in which additional exercises are discussed to reinforce the lesson. Along the way we provide a glimpse of some foundational ideas of computer science such as incomputability and general system development strategies such as incremental and iterative reasoning. This paper discusses the outcomes of PBL courses, which include expected improvement in the overall results achieved by students who have undertaken PBL courses, compared to those students who have not.
