BÉLA JAUSZ, PROFESSOR OF PEDAGOGY, RECTOR MAGNIFICUS OF THE KOSSUTH LAJOS UNIVERSITY (1957-1959)
Views:0This study examines the rectorship of Béla Jausz within the political and institutional context of the late 1950s. The analysis reveals that Jausz embodied a transitional role between traditional bourgeois academic values and the emerging state-socialist higher education policy. His tenure was marked by partial efforts to restore institutional structures and academic traditions, while simultaneously reflecting the increasing restriction of university autonomy and the strengthening of centralised political control. The paper interprets Jausz’s leadership as both a stabilising force in the post-1956 consolidation period and a facilitating element in the gradual establishment of a centralised system of higher education governance.

THE FORMATION OF UNIVERSITY NETWORKS AND THEIR PROGESS
Views:0In this study, I analyze the emergence of different types of higher education institutions in the world from ancient times to the end of the First World War. I will discuss in detail the beginnings and specific institutions of non-European higher education. I divide the development of higher education in the world into five eras. 1 The era of non-European-type universities. 2. The era of medieval universities. 3. The era of religious universities. 4. The era of state, national universities. 5. The era of global universities. In the first four eras, I present the quantitative development and characteristics of universities by continent.

„SED NOS NON MUTAMUR IN ILLIS” – SURVIVING COLLEGE TRADITIONS OF A STUDENT ASSOCIATION: THE CHOR OF THE REFORMED COLLEGE OF DEBRECEN URING THE FIRST ACADEMIC YEAR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF DEBRECEN AND THE FIRST WORD WAR
Views:0The College Choir (Kántus) of the Reformed College of Debrecen has been serving the school and the local society since 1739 with its performances on school occasions, memorial events, and funerals. During the years of the First World War the young men had to face not only the difficulties caused by the war, but also the challenges of the newly formed university. The Kántus, as a student association felt the duty of keeping the memory of national heroes and religious predecessors alive, as well as their comrades who were killed in the war. The study uses the minutes of the choir, news of local nad national newspapers, and memoirs of the members involved in the events, and, in some cases, conflicts around the choir. Among the sources, the paper also relies on the collected memoirs and diaries of the 40 volunteers who defined themselves as members of the choir during their training in Budapest.

THE PLAN OF THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY FROM 1846
Views:0The predecessor of today's Eötvös Loránd University was relocated from Buda to Pest in 1784, and several buildings that had been in use for decades, typically owned by monastic orders, were handed over for its use. By the mid-19th century, the buildings—especially the medical faculty building—were in very poor condition, so at the recommendation of the Governor's Council, Emperor Ferdinand V ordered the development of a cost estimate for new university buildings in 1846. Ferenc Toldy, the director of the University Library, made a proposal for the new building, outlining his ideal library design in a multi-page report. The study publishes Toldy's draft and the correspondence related to the matter held by the ELTE University Library and Archives.

STUDENTS FROM CROATIA, HUNGARY AND TRANSYLVANIA AT THE UNIVERSITY OF VIENNA (1714-1743).
Views:0This source publication and study examines theology students from the Lands of the Holy Crown of Hungary – especially those studying outside seminaries – at the University of Vienna between 1714 and 1743. It is based on a previously unused manuscript preserved in the Austrian National Library (Nomina D. D. Theologorum inscribi coepta Anno MDCCXIV), which provides a more comprehensive record than the university’s matricula or faculty registers. Focusing on externi (non-resident students), the study identifies 218 individuals from Hungary, Croatia, and Transylvania (488 matriculation entries). Despite Tridentine prescriptions favoring seminary training, most theology students in Vienna studied outside seminaries, reflecting limited capacity and strong demand. The analysis reveals fluctuations in student numbers due to wars and changing educational opportunities within the Habsburg Monarchy, and reconstructs the cohort’s ethnic composition, highlighting the predominance of Hungarian (Ungarus) students alongside a significant Croatian and South Slavic presence. By publishing and systematizing this source, the article provides new prosopographical data on a largely unknown student group and offers a methodological framework for the analysis of similar matriculation records.
