Health behavior and mental health among college students at the Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania
26-38Views:415Aim: Our study is a quantitative investigation on the health behaviour and mental health of Sapientia Hungarian University students.
Methods: The self-administered paper based standardized questionnaire contains several scales: the Self Esteem Inventory (RSESH), the Purpose in Life Test (PIL), the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS4) and the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12). Data of 206 respondents were analysed from the Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania.
Results: Data show that students with lower self-esteem and mental health use more alcohol than students with higher selfesteem. Physical activity seems to be a protective factor against mental illness, the students who practice sport frequently are mentally healthier than those who do not. Mental health of students is largely socially determinated.

Freeloaders, anomic students, ritual persistent students and goal-oriented persistent students. Unusual risks in higher educational students’ dropout
45-62Views:258The question of our study is measuring the relationship between the risk of dropout and the belief in the usefulness of the higher educational certificate and the effort to obtain it. In our analysis, the student database of the HERD research (N=1295) was used. Four groups were identified by cluster analysis. 1) Among the anomic students (the group described with anomie), the level of belief the usefulness of the higher educational certificate and the effort toward that is the lowest while the risk of dropping out is the highest. 2) The ritual persistent (i.e. tenacious) students are able to make strong efforts but do not believe in the degree. Their diligence does not offer them the same level of protection against dropout as 3) the goal-oriented persistence which means that the student believes in the degree as well besides the diligence. 4) The freeloaders are less diligent, but aware of the value of the degree, offering them bigger protection than the disappointed diligence of the ritual persistent students. Among the target-oriented persistent group is higher the proportion of students who learnt in an elite secondary educational institution and who has a graduated householder, while among the ritual persistent group the proportion of those having priority admission points due to disadvantaged/cumulative disadvantaged (HH/HHH) position is higher.

Academic risks of students characterized by risk-behaviour
63-78Views:247The aim of our study is to reveal the effectiveness and efficiency of students with different health behaviors. We were curious about the differences between students with different health-care (risk, inactive and health-conscious) students in the studied dimensions of educational performance in Hungary in the Northern Great Plain region, as well as in the Transcarpathia, Highlands, Vojvodina, Par-tium and Transylvania (IESA 2015; N = 2017). In line with our preliminary assumptions, we can see that there are more students at risk who attend less than half of the lectures, one or two or even half of their exams have not been completed, and less than one hour per lesson, while the latter is the least characteristic of for health-conscious students. They are making great efforts to meet their serious study load, but there are more people who are unable to cope with these difficulties in the first round and have failed their examinations. In this way, health-conscious behavior does not constitute supporting factor in the effectiveness of the study.

The trial of digital education among cumulatively disadvantageous students
160-189Views:539This study has done research into the success of joining to the digital extracurricular education among cumulatively disadvantageous elementary and secondary school students in the North-Great Plain of Hungary. The characteristics of Hungarian education is inequality and selectivity, which phenomena have also been observable during digital education. The questionnaire that has been carried out concerning 216 students explored the students’ perspective of the characteristics of digital education, the methods of learning, the ways of contact, assistance and evaluation and the advantages and disadvantages of the above mentioned to the knowledge of students, the effect of these to their digital competencies, the fulfillment of infrastructural conditions, the applied digital platforms. The results of the research show how these cumulatively disadvantageous students could take part in this new form of education less effectively.

Investigating Language Barriers in Public Healthcare Services: A Case Study of International Students in Budapest, Hungary
158-184Views:264Language barriers in healthcare impact the cost and quality of services, affecting international students in Budapest, Hungary. The study explores challenges faced by international students in understanding medical advice within the public healthcare system and identify strategies to overcome these challenges. A qualitative approach involving eighteen international students from various universities in Budapest was used for data analysis. While most participants did not face urgent health issues, those with more severe conditions encountered significant language barriers, signage issues, and access delays. The primary challenge identified was the language barrier, which complicated communication with medical staff. Participants utilized technology like Google Translate, interpreters, and non-verbal communication to overcome language barriers. The study emphasizes the need for policies to enhance communication between healthcare providers and international students for equitable access to quality healthcare services.

The transmission of social status and dropping out from higher education
5-23Views:380The transmission of social status and dropping out from higher education. The sociology of intellectuals offers us a special approach to the phenomenon of dropout. The rate of students with lower parental educational level (’non-traditional students’) has been changed during the process of the expansion. These students have deficiencies in several fields and these deficiencies can rise the chance of drop-out. In the frame of „Social and institutional factors of student dropout in higher education” project (led by Prof. Gabriella Pusztai, OTKA project, no. 123847) a database was created in 2018 (N=605). The respondents were earlier students after the drop-out process. We tried to identify the features of the sociocultural background, the main factors of the drop-out and compare the patterns of the first generation intellectuals and students with intellectual background. Our empirical findings have showed that in the case of lower parental level the elements of compulsion seems to be more typical and voluntary withdrawal seems to be more frequent in the other case.

Measurement of physical activity in youth: a comparative study
121-130Views:342Due to the inadequate quantity and quality of physical activity, more and more young people suffer from chronic illnesses. The aim of this study was to measure the health behavior of 5th, 7th and 9th grade students in a Hungarian (Tiszafüred) and a Romanian (Oradea) institution with special regard to physical activity. A total of 206 students participated in the study. The questionnaire included questions related to socio-demographic data and physical activity habits. Differences between the mean scores of continuous variables were assessed by Mann-Whitney tests, and the frequency differences between categorical variables were evaluated by Fisher exact tests. Most of the Hungarian students (88%) think that they do enough exercise, while this rate is 81% in the Romanian school. No significant difference was found between the two institutions relating to the frequency of out of-school physical activities (p = 0.304), and the opinion on doing exercise (p = 0.267). Based on our results we can say that doing exercise out of school is popular among students in both the Hungarian and Romanian schools.

Mit mutat a szakmai tanárképzés világa? A szakmai tanárképzés hallgatóinak szociokulturális háttere és tanulási motivációi
37-69Views:17The development and transformation of vocational teacher education grounded in university traditions has been analysed by several Hungarian researchers (Ballér 1991; Katona 2015; Orosz 2003; Patyi 2021). There are also studies that trace the evolution of individual programmes—such as engineering teacher education (Holik, Nemes-Németh and Sanda 2021; Horváth 2013), agricultural engineering teacher education (Surányi 2018), and economics teacher education (Antal and Baksa 2013) from their inception to the present day. Beyond historical and structural analyses, research has also addressed the methodological and curricular characteristics of these programmes (Benedek and Szabóné Berki 2011). However, only a limited number of studies have examined the recruitment base of applicants entering vocational teacher training (Szabóné Berki 2015; Engler et al. 2017; Máté-Szabó 2019). More recently, scholarship in the field has shifted towards VET-pedagogical perspectives and methodological renewal (Rádli 2011; Tóth 2012; Szabóné Berki 2015; Tordai 2015; Holik 2016), as well as institutional case studies (Bacsa-Bán 2014; Tóth 2011; Nagyné 2024). The aim of this study is to provide a comprehensive overview of the sociocultural background, prior educational pathways, and learning motivations of students enrolled in Hungarian vocational teacher education. Our research examined 215 students across four study programmes: agricultural engineering teacher, health teacher, economics teacher, and engineering teacher education. Findings show that vocational teacher training predominantly enrols adult learners who typically possess multiple degrees, substantial professional experience, and a stable family background. The study also explores geographical access to programmes, students’ satisfaction, and their attitudes towards learning. Regarding learning motivation, two key dimensions were identified: emotional–self-realisation motives and external, instrumental drivers. Results indicate that family status exerts a significant influence on intrinsic motivation; single students demonstrate substantially stronger knowledge-acquisition and self-development intentions compared to married or divorced peers.

Többszörös intelligenciavizsgálat a Nemzeti Közszolgálati Egyetem hallgatói körében
177-194Views:126Cognitive flexibility is one of the most important abilities that is a challenge of the 21st century, which can be achieved by developing creativity and intelligence (Spiro & Jehng 1990) or by applying the flow pedagogical model in the classroom. In the present study, we investigate the multiple intelligence levels of students at our university (N=5670; n=747). The focus of the research is to assess the students' multiple intelligence map and to examine its applicability in the classroom. The quantitative research was conducted in the academic year 2022/2023, for which the Gardner multiple intelligence test was adapted. Our hypothesis is that students' intelligence types are strong for the strength of the faculty, while the other intelligence types need improvement. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS statistical software with multivariate procedures including independent variables of gender, faculty and place of residence. The results showed a significant correlation between the faculty distribution of students and the variables under study. This supports the theory that cognitive flexibility can be enhanced primarily through the development of different types of intelligence.

Az iskolai szegregáció szerepe a hátrányos helyzetű gyermekek és fiatalok lemaradásában
67-88Views:1672Experts have long studied the relationship between school segregation and unequal opportunity for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Drawing on academic literature, research and statistical data, this paper examines the consolidation of school segregation in the country, the impact of segregation on the learning achievement of disadvantaged students in public education and on intergroup relations. The issue of educational segregation and integration is often a subject of debate, but research evidence favours heterogeneous composition to foster students' school careers, future labour market prospects and social inclusion.

Discovering factors influencing study success of students with disabilities and learning difficulties in an interview study
31-44Views:394The focus of our research is on students with disabilities defined by the current National Higher Education Act in Hungary. The actuality of the topic is that after the millennium, due to the expansion of higher education, the above-mentioned students appeared at universities, but regulations dealing with their presence in Hungary were laid down as late as 2007. Earlier researches have studied the accessibility and inclusive practices of the institutions internationally and in Hungary, but only little attention has been paid to these students’ chances of acquisition and retention to higher education. Equal opportunities in higher education appear to be an important supporting factor in our research however, the overall social context of the individual has a great influence on successful entry and graduation. A further research opportunity, a deeper, more extensive quantitative study of the institutional presence of students with disabilities and the factors contributing to their learning success is emerging.

Research on learning styles based on Felder-Soloman test
95-112Views:1117In my survey I try to find the answer that how secondary school students study and how teachers can use this information in their lessons when they create lesson plans. Answers of Felder-Soloman learning style questionnaire include how students receive information in the easiest way, how they systematize them and what they need to memorize them. The results are important for both students and their parents. In results of survey we can see that the most of students are visual, concrete, active and analytic, so they are in the inductive group. A fewer of them are verbal, abstract, reflective and global, so they are in deductive group. I know the answer too that parents’ educational attainment, students’ daily school of, career choices and the class do not influence the studying style.

TDK részvétel motivációi a Debreceni Egyetem Tehetséggondozó Programjában résztvevő hallgatók körében
78-101Views:245Recognition and support of outstanding students are among the most important tasks of higher education, as they can thereby be motivated to pursue a career in academia. In our study, we examined the willingness of members of the Talent Management Program (DETEP) at the University of Debrecen to participate and present at scientific student conferences. Our research was based on a questionnaire survey. The sample consisted of respondents who had previously participated in local TDK conferences (n=128). Based on our results, we can conclude that students who have participated three or more times in TDK events are considering a future career in academia. Respondents who have participated only once mainly participate for the purpose of the competition According to the results between achieving the ranking and the experience of participating in the TDK, participation is experienced as a positive experience if they manage to achieve a ranking at the local conference. Additionally, achieving a ranking also affects the feeling of gaining an advantage during studies and faculty recognition among the respondents.

“Brave enough to remove the shell of a chestnut.” The career path of a resilient teacher
85-101Views:392Being successful at school as a Roma student is a crucial sociological question. Roma teachers’ experience is invaluable when seeking to understand and solve problems that students with similar backgrounds have. Resilience is our academic starting point. In PISA who belong to a lower social class but have higher achievements are called resilient students. Educational sociologists say that a person’s life is resilient when it is successful, notwithstanding the disadvantaged social background (Ceglédi 2018). We have analysed Roma teachers with resilient lives and looked for answers to what kind of possibilities and dangers of a resilient life might hide in the pedagogical career. Given a unique target group, we chose snowball sampling. 6 semistructured interviews were made in eastern Hungary in 2019, in which we emphasized the resilience of their life taken, the pedagogic job, and their connection. We did qualitative analysis of the transcripts. The resilient Roma teachers incorporate their life experience into their pedagogic fields and their coping serves as a model for their students.

A szakmai tanárképzés átalakuló mintázatai Magyarországon: Tendenciák és összefüggések a jelentkezési adatok alapján öt szak összevetésében
15-36Views:18The study examines the recruitment trends in Hungarian vocational teacher education between 2016 and 2025, focusing on five key programmes: agricultural engineering teacher, health sciences teacher, economics teacher, engineering teacher, and social studies teacher education. Using quantitative time series analysis based on the publicly available felvi.hu database, the research explores changes in the number of applicants and admitted students, trends in first-choice applications, and shifts in gender distribution among students. The results indicate a general but varying degree of growth after 2022, which was particularly strong in the fields of economics, agriculture, and engineering. Distinct patterns emerge across the examined disciplines: while health and social studies programmes remain female-dominated, engineering teacher education continues to be characterized by a high proportion of male students. Overall, the 2016–2025 period reflects a partial restoration of prestige in vocational teacher education.

A sikerek képesek a tanulási problémákkal küzdő tanulók önbecsülését is növelni, ami együtt jár a társas támogatás növekedésének és a kirekesztés csökkenésének a szubjektív észlelésével.

A hátrányos helyzetű tanulók nem-kognitív problémamegoldó készségének fejlődése a tanodában
41-69Views:455In contrast to cognitive skills, non-cognitive skills play a key role in shaping an individual's life course, yet the development of non-cognitive skills attracts insufficient attention. This study explores the contribution of study halls today to address the social disadvantage inherited by students in the area of non-cognitive problem-solving skills. The results of our exploratory study in five study halls in cities with county status in the Northern Great Plain region showed that study halls play a prominent role in mitigating the skills deficits of the mainly upper primary disadvantaged students included in the study. As a result of the developmental work of the study hall, problem-solving skills showed improvements mainly in the reduction of problem sources, in the problem-solving instruments and in the form of problem solving. As a result of the intervention of the study hall, the students' acquired social disadvantages were reduced and their inclusion in school, later in the labour market and in society was reinforced.

Szakoktató szakos hallgatók induktív gondolkodásának fejlettsége
191-209Views:14The labour market expects that beginners have advanced communication, organizational and problem-solving skills, analogical and logical thinking, creativity, interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and be assertive and motivated. In professional teacher training, especially with regard to vocational education and training (VET), the role of these transversal competencies is, if possible, even more important, since it will be the task of teachers to develop these competencies of students in VET. In this research, the development of inductive thinking of students in vocational instructor training (VIT) was assessed. The inductive, and within that abstract, thinking of the 60 students participating in the correspondence VIT shows a very diverse picture. We managed to isolate a relatively small group who achieved good results with a small investment of time, so their thinking can be said to be fast and effective. However, there was also a larger group who made full use of the available time but whose inductive thinking was less developed. Both groups deserve special attention from a methodological point of view.

Examining the relationship between health literacy and alcohol consumption among students studying in technical school
2-12Views:481International research highlighted that adolescents with lower health literacy are more likely to consume alcohol. As far as we know, no similar investigation has been conducted in Hungary yet. The purpose of the study is to assess the health literacy level and alcohol use behaviours among 11th and 12th grade students. A total of 120 adolescents participated in the study. Our questionnaire included questions about alcohol use behaviours and socio-demographic background. Health literacy was measured using the Newest Vital Sign (NVS) test. Statistical analysis and exploration of relationships were performed using Fisher's exact tests and Kruskal-Wallis tests. According to the NVS test, 45.83% of the participants had adequate, 26.67% had a possibility of limited, and 27.50% had a high likelihood of limited health literacy. Borderline significance was found between the total lifetime prevalence of drunkenness and the level of health literacy (p=0.057). Limited health literacy is common among students. However, no clear relationship was detected between health literacy and alcohol use behaviour.

A felsőfokú továbbtanulási döntés determináns összetevői. - Empirikus kutatás a végzős Hargita megyei középiskolás tanulók körében
5-30Views:221Another choice after finishing secondary school: university or work? Does the decision taken earlier - on the choice of secondary school - affect the decision to be taken four years later? Behind every (further education) decision there are manifest and latent variables. The target population of our research is the senior students in Harghita County. We use a multistage group sampling. In the first stage, all the Hungarian-language theoretical high schools (lyceums) in the Szekler county (Harghita) were included in the sampling frame, and pairs of vocational high schools were matched. We were interested to find out which factors and arguments induce students' decisions for or against further education. The family background effect is also present in students' post-secondary school decisions, since there is little discrepancy between investment risk and probability of success for children of higher-status parents, and the same applies to the gap between aspirations and actual achievement.

Miért lesz valakiből szakoktató? - A szakmai tanárképzés rekrutációjának és motivációinak feltárása
101-121Views:16The study aims to explore the recruitment patterns and motivational backgrounds of students entering vocational teacher education. The research focuses on part-time vocational teacher students at Dunaújváros University, who come from various industrial sectors. The empirical survey was conducted in spring 2025 through an online questionnaire, completed by 100 respondents. The questions addressed the reasons for choosing the teaching profession, the relationship between professional experience and motivation, and attitudes towards the teaching role. The findings reveal that students are primarily motivated by a commitment to knowledge sharing, professional growth, and a desire for a stable career. At the same time, some responses indicate uncertainty about the prestige and practical challenges of the teaching profession. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of recruitment trends in vocational teacher education and may serve as a basis for improving the content and support elements of teacher training programs.

„Késleltetett elhivatottság” - A szakoktatói rekrutáció folyamata és a tanulók erősségeinek feltárása
70-100Views:12The recruitment and training of vocational instructors represent one of the most pressing challenges in the Hungarian vocational education system, simultaneously addressing the need for teacher supply and the attractiveness of the profession. The aim of this study was to explore how students entering vocational instructor training between 2021 and 2024 assess their own strengths along the character dimensions identified by positive psychology, and what changes can be observed across cohorts. The analysis, based on a sample of 221 students, employed descriptive statistics, ANOVA, correlation analysis, and cluster analysis. Findings indicate that students’ strength profiles are generally at a high level, particularly in curiosity, love of learning, kindness, and integrity. Two distinct profiles emerged: a high and a more reserved self-assessment group. The increase in conscientiousness suggests that entrants to the program are increasingly characterized by a strong sense of vocation and responsibility. From a pedagogical perspective, differentiated development strategies are needed, while from a recruitment perspective, vocational instructor training can be positioned as a profession offering value-based, community-oriented, and personal development opportunities.

Magyarországi egyetemek hallgatóinak sportolási szokásai. Áttekintő irodalmi elemzés
92-102Views:594Previous research has highlighted that the frequency of regular exercise decreases linearly with age. There is, therefore, a need for young people to develop healthy lifestyle habits for themselves. In the course of our research, a literature review of Matarka (Hungarian Periodicals Table of Contents Database), MTMT (Hungarian Scientific Bibliograhy), and publications in the archives of DEENK (University and National Library of the University of Debrecen) was conducted to find those studies that examine the sports habits of Hungarian university students. A total of 22 studies were identified. The articles concerned 10 universities. The analysis found that although a significant proportion of university students engage in sports, the conscious integration of health education into students’ lives is recommended.
