    Open problems play a key role in mathematics education, also in primary school. However, children in primary school work in many relations in a different way from learner in secondary school. Therefore, the (possibly) first confrontation with an open task could be problematical. Within the framework of an international paper and pencil test it was examined how far children of primary school notice the openness of a task and which mistakes they do during working on that task. In particularly are meant by openness different interpretations of the task, which all lead to a set of numbers with more than one element as a result. For evaluation, a common classification system was adapted by slightly modification of the original system.

    In the literature, several methods are suggested to deal with problems regarding the efficiency of mathematics education including techniques that help integrate new knowledge into long-term memory. We examined how effective the application of the immediate feedback method is in teaching engineering mathematics. The article presents the method used and the results obtained during the study.

  • Application of a color education software to improve color aptitude

    The ability to handle colors smoothly and consciously may be vital to professionals in various fields, including engineers specializing in architecture or design. Education in sciences related to colors and a developed color aptitude are essential. In our experience, many secondary school graduates in Hungary exhibit inadequate competence and need to be trained in both fields by college instructors, thereby laying the foundations for their future professional work. In our paper, we introduce a computer-based method to teach color theory using a self-developed interactive educational software. We also demonstrate the results of a test measuring the efficiency of the software. Our method was shown to be capable of familiarizing students with the basic fields of visual computing, e.g. graphics and image processing.

    In the paper the four main stages of an experiment are described focusing on the question as to how much measuring the length and perimeter of various objects such as fences, buildings by old Hungarian units of measurements and standards contribute to the establishment of the concept of perimeter.
    It has also been examined in what ways and to what extent the various forms of teaching such as frontal, group and pair and individual work contribute to the general knowledge, thinking, creativity and co-operation in this area.
    It will also be shown to what extent folk tales, various activities and games have proved to be efficient in the teaching of the particular topic.
    Every stage of the experiment was started and closed with a test in order to find out whether the development was successful and children managed to gain lasting knowledge in this particular area.
  • Impact of teacher communication skills on students’ classroom engagement in mathematics learning

    The study investigated teachers’ communication skills in relation to students’ classroom engagement in mathematics learning. The study area is Makurdi Local Government Area in Benue State, Nigeria. This study adopted a cross-sectional research design. A sample of 34 teachers and 204 students were drawn from twenty schools. Two researcher-structured instruments were used for data collection: Mathematics Teacher’s Communication Skills Questionnaire (MTCSQ) and Students’ Engagement in Mathematics Questionnaire (SEMQ). Descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, and independent t-tests were used to address the research questions and test the hypotheses. It was found that there is significant difference among the mean ratings on behavioural, and emotional engagements of students in mathematics classes taught by teachers with poor, fair, and good communication skills. There is no significant difference among the mean ratings on combined and cognitive engagements of students in mathematics classes taught by teachers with poor, fair, and good communication skills. Equally found was that the differences between male and female students’ mean engagement in mathematics for poor, fair, and good communication skill classes were not statistically significant. It was then recommended that teacher communication skills should be fashioned in ways to accommodate and strengthen each component of students’ engagement.

  • Development of classification module for automated question generation framework

    Automatic question generation is in the focus of recent researches which includes bordering disciplines like education, text mining, knowledge-engineering. The elaborated system generates multi-choice questions from textbooks without using an external semantic database. One of the base modules of the system is the classification module defining the extracted word. This paper describes modules of the framework including a detailed analysis of the classification part. We show the operability of the elaborated system through a practical test.
  • A case study of the integration of Algorithm Visualizations in Hungarian programming education

    In this study, I will introduce how Algorithm Visualizations (AV) can help programming education or, in this case, the acquisition of basic programming theorems. I used two di erent methods to test this: in the first round, I examined in a larger group how much the students' ability to solve specific tasks changes after being introduced to a visualization tool, and then, what was their motivation and experience during this process. In the second round, I looked for the components that could be important when choosing a tool with the help of an in-depth interview with a smaller number of individuals. In both cases, I describe the research, experience, and results of the study, and then summarize them at the end.

  • Dynamic geometry systems in teaching geometry

    Computer drawing programs opened up new opportunities in the teaching of geometry: they make it possible to create a multitude of drawings quickly, accurately and with flexibly changing the input data, and thus make the discovery of geometry an easier process. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the application possibilities of dynamic geometric systems in primary and secondary schools, as well as in distance education. A general characteristic feature of these systems is that they store the steps of the construction, and can also execute those steps after a change is made to the input data. For the demonstration of the applications, we chose the Cinderella program. We had an opportunity to test some parts of the present paper in an eighth grade primary school.
  • Comparing the IT skills and the programming knowledge of Hungarian students specialized in informatics with Romanian students attending a science course or a mathematics-informatics course

    The goal of this research is an analysis of the IT skills and programming knowledge of Hungarian and Romanian students attending a Science course or a Mathematics-Informatics course. Analysed was how effectively can students from different grades answer questions dealing with different subjects. After having evaluated the test results correctness of the original presumption emerged. Significance level was 5% through the analysis. Significant divergency in knowledge of Hungarian students and Romanian students of Humanities (Profil Uman) was found in 11th and 12th grades too. Romanian students attending a science course (Profil Real) and a Mathematics-Informatics course scored higher in programming than their Hungarian counterparts specialized in Informatics in the 11th grade. After the evaluation a final conclusion can be made: Romanian students of the Real Profile have the same or more practice in programming than Hungarian students specialized in Informatics, though the latters have the same or better IT skills. Unfortunately, Hungarian teachers concentrate on word processing and spreadsheet calculation and teach programming just for the students specialized in Informatics, although algorithm thinking would be important for every student before finishing secondary school.
