  • Ist eine schnelle tiefgehende (und nachhaltige) Änderung in der Vorstellung von Mathematiklehrern möglich? - Reflexion der Erfahrungen eines Fortbildungskurses im Bereich der mathematischen Modellierung

    Based on the material which was worked out within the project LEMA (2006-2009) pilot-teacher training courses were organized in the six partner countries, so in Hungary as well in the subject: Practice of Modelling tasks in the classroom. According to the tests which were filled out by the participants the conclusion was formulated that they achieved some changes in their pedagogical knowledge and in their estimation concerning their self-efficacy, but they didn't have shown any changes in their beliefs of mathematics and mathematics education. However according to their experience as project partners and leaders of the Hungarian course the authors have the idea that despite of the international results there are changes in this subject in the case of the Hungarian participants. This way can formulated the question:
    Which changes can be observed in the case of the participants concerning belief towards mathematics and mathematics education after the course and how long-lasting these changes are?
    The question is examined on the example of two teachers who were participants of the course.
  • Über die Verwendung von Maple für die Simulation von Mechanismen

    Maple is used to do numerical computation, plot graphs and do exact symbolic manipulations and word processing. This paper demonstrates how Maple can be used for the simulation of mechanisms. This offers the possibility for students to become familiar with this particular section of mathematical modelling. The mechanism under consideration is a so-called F-mechanisms, i.e., a planar parallel 3-RRR robot with three synchronously driven cranks. It turns out that at this example it is not possible to find the poses of the moving triangle exactly by graphical methods with traditional instruments only. Hence, numerical methods are essential for the analysis of motions which can be performed by an F-mechanism.

    We discuss aspects of the Education Reform from teaching to educational system. In this context we recognize some problems in recognition of some competencies that students need to achieve and we present how we have developed the measurement method of spatial abilities and problem solving competence. Especially, we investigate how students use spatial visualization abilities in solving various problems in other mathematical course. We have tested how students use their spatial abilities previously developed in geometry courses based on conceptual approach to solve a test based on procedural concept in Mathematical Analysis course.

    Recursion is somewhat of an enigma, and examples used to illustrate the idea of recursion often emphasize three algorithms: Towers of Hanoi, Factorial, and Fibonacci, often sacrificing the exploration of recursive behavior for the notion that a "function calls itself". Very little effort is spent on more interesting recursive algorithms. This paper looks at how three lesser known algorithms of recursion can be used in teaching behavioral aspects of recursion: The Josephus Problem, the Hailstone Sequence and Ackermann's Function.
  • How to use our own program evaluation system to streamline teaching computer programming

    During computer programming contests the use of automatic evaluation systems is becoming more and more frequent. In said systems the contestants are allowed to submit their source code that will be evaluated with the results reported back to them. According to this report the contestant can realise for what test cases his program works properly and for what cases does it fail. This kind of on-line evaluation system is used for example in the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), in the final round of the Nemes Tihamér National Programming Competition, and in the Selection Competition for IOI in Hungary. A contest management system can be used for other purposes apart from this singular example. A well-developed evaluation system can foster not only the teaching of computer programming and the preparation of students for programming contests but the teacher's work as well.
  • Maximum and minimum problems in secondary school education

    The aim of this paper is to offer some possible ways of solving extreme value problems by elementary methods with which the generally available method of differential calculus can be avoided. We line up some problems which can be solved by the usage of these elementary methods in secondary school education. The importance of the extremum problems is ignored in the regular curriculum; however they are in the main stream of competition problems – therefore they are useful tools in the selection and development of talented students. The extremum problem-solving by elementary methods means the replacement of the methods of differential calculus (which are quite stereotyped) by the elementary methods collected from different fields of Mathematics, such as elementary inequalities between geometric, arithmetic and square means, the codomain of the quadratic and trigonometric functions, etc. In the first part we show some patterns that students can imitate in solving similar problems. These patterns could also provide some ideas for Hungarian teachers on how to introduce this topic in their practice. In the second part we discuss the results of a survey carried out in two secondary schools and we formulate our conclusion concerning the improvement of students' performance in solving these kind of problems.
  • Outstanding mathematicians in the 20th century: András Rapcsák (1914-1993)

    In this paper we commemorate the life and work of András Rapcsák on the occasion of the centenary of his birth. He was an outstanding professor and a scholar teacher. He was head of the Department of Geometry (1958-1973) and the director of the Institute of Mathematics at the University of Debrecen (Hungary). He played an important role in the life of the University of Debrecen. He was the rector of this university between 1966 and 1973.
    At the beginning of his career he taught at secondary schools in several towns. He wrote mathematical schoolbooks with coauthors. He also taught at Teacher's College in Debrecen and in Eger.
    He became to interested in differential geometry under the influence of Ottó Varga. The fields of his research were line-element spaces and related areas. He was elected an Ordinary Member of the Hungarian Academy of Science in 1965. He wrote 21 papers, 8 school and textbooks and 3 articles in didactics of mathematics.
  • Smartphones and QR-codes in education - a QR-code learning path for Boolean operations

    During the last few years new technologies have become more and more an integrative part of everyday life. The increase of the possession rate of smartphones by young people is especially impressive. This fact asks us educators to think about a didactically and pedagogically well designed integration of smartphones into our lessons and to bring in ideas and concepts. This paper describes a specific learning path where learners can work step by step on the topic Boolean Operations with QR-Code scanners which have been installed on their smartphones. Student teachers for mathematics who completed the learning path took part in a survey where they were asked questions about their willingness to integrate smartphones into their lessons. The results of the survey are presented in the second part of the paper.
  • The formation of area concept with the help of manipulative activities

    Examining the performance of Hungarian students of Grades 4-12 in connection with area measurement, we found many deficiencies and thinking failures. In the light of this background, it seems reasonable to review the educational practice and to identify those teaching movements that trigger the explored problems and to design a teaching experiment that tries to avoid and exclude them. Based on result we make recommendations for the broad teaching practice. In our study we report on one part of a multi-stage teaching experiment in which we dealt with the comparison of the areas of figures, the decomposition of figures and the special role of the rectangle in the process of area concept formation. The conclusion of the post-test is that manipulative activities are important and necessary in Grades 5 and 6, more types of equidecomposition activities are needed and the number of measuring tasks with grid as a tool should also be increased.

    The meeting Researches in Didactics of Mathematics and Computer Sciences was held in Novi Sad, Serbia from the 23th to the 25th of January, 2015 at the University of Novi Sad. It was organized by the PhD School of Mathematics and Computer Sciences of the University of Debrecen and the Department of Mathematics and Informatics of the University of Novi Sad.
    The 70 participants – including 42 lecturers, and 18 PhD students – came from 9 countries, 28 cities and represented 40 intstitutions of higher education.
