Empirical Research on Business Awareness Concerning Workplace Crèches

Our objective with the empirical research was to learn about the opinion of business leaders about the new form of care, and to get an explanation why the opportunity to create a crèche in the workplace is not being used by today's companies, despite the facilitating state environment (financial funding for tender funds and favorable personal ...conditions). Our further goal was to formulate suggestions for business leaders to raise awareness of workplace crèches.

Evaluation of the Technical Management Bsc by labor market and its development possibilities at the College of Szolnok

The College of Szolnok conducted a qualitative research under the framework of SROP 4.1.1.C –12/1/KONV-2012-2004 to support the strategic development of Technical Management BA program. Using qualitative research methods we point out that the closer cooperation with companies will be crucial in the future: it is going to allow faster response... to market demand, better knowledge transfer of newest skills, and higher acceptance of Technical Management BA program and College of Szolnok. Results show that the current training level in College of Szolnok requires further development to enhance the marketability of graduates, in which the transfer of the related areas is also an important issue. Addition to professional basic knowledge strong requirements are also language and communication skills in high-level.

Capacity to handle complexity – The importance of contextual awareness in healthcare communication in English as a lingua franca

Hungarian healthcare providers – as most of their colleagues around the world – engage in interaction with foreign patients, whom they do not share a mother tongue with, in English as a lingua franca (ELF) most of the time. These communicative situations pose great challenges to healthcare providers, as they have to be capable of adjusting ...their language use to their patients’ cognitive, linguistic and communicative-pragmatic schemata which often differ from their own. In order to develop such a capacity, ESP classes must focus on improving health science students’ awareness in exploring various ELF contexts which form ground for making informed decisions on the use of terminology. The present research aims at showing the complex dynamic nature of these ELF contexts based on empirical data collected via interviews with Hungarian healthcare providers who have extended experience in working with patients in international environments. The results can inform the everyday practice of ESP teachers in the field of the health sciences.

The pragmatic mistakes of Hungarian students learning English – about an empirical research

In my paper I try to give a precise definition of the term ’pragmatic competence’ and I describe how this term has evolved. I define the term ’pragmatic failure’ and I elaborate on its judgement, its causes, and its types. I describe the Hungarian – English contrastive researches. I list the most frequent pragmatic mistakes made by Hu...ngarian students while speaking English. I present the findings of my research that I carried out among the students of the College of Szolnok in  October 2014. Finally I discuss whether pragmatic competence can be taught, and if yes, for what purpose.

Women’s Buying Habits in the Case of Cosmeti c Products

In our present study we wish to point out the peculiariti es of women’s cosmeti cs buying habits. In our interview examinati on we have tried to get a closer picture of the characteristi cs of women’s buying habits and their atti tudes to cosmeti cs. The topicality of our research has been supported by several phenomena. On the one hand, th...e most frequent associati on with women is ‘beauty’; a woman always has to be well-groomed, prett y, and beauti ful according to the expectati ons of society. On the other hand, the appreciati on of the role of the body appears as a general trend in society, which means that each product or service, which serves bodily culture and care, play a more and more important role. Many other authors (Davis-Rigaux 1974, Popcorn- Marigold 2001, Pólya 2012) have already discussed women’s cosmeti cs buying habits, fi rst of all their decision making role within the family, but because of the topicality of the theme we have considered it important to conduct further, empirical examinati on.

The short and long-term effect of tourism on behavior can be verified by empirical studies mainly in ecotourism. The results of present research focus on the short-term impact of be-havioral attitudes on health tourism and post-journey health behavior. The study is basically based on the guidelines of international literature, showing a discrep...ancy in the applied sta-tistical calculations. The analysis was performed in the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test, for further confirmation from the descriptive statistical calculations using median and mode tests. According to the responses, the health tourism trips appeared in a field of support for the maintenance and development of health.

Pedagogical Implications of Teaching English for Science and Technology

Teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP) has traditionally been context-driven, focusing on the special field in which the language is expected to be used; needs-responsive, trying to define language learners’ needs and adapt teaching practices to these needs; and finally learner-centred, in a sense that teaching
processes and learners... activities have been highly influenced by the desired learning outcomes. However, due to recent global changes the conventional ways of teaching have been challenged. The paper lists some of the most intriguing pedagogical challenges for ESP practitioners and also recommends
possible solutions to meet them, partly from overviewing related academic literature, partly from successful practical implementations. Pedagogical issues raised by the internationalisation of higher education are also investigated by the author and some preliminary results of empirical research about learning styles are presented.
