  On October 10–11, 2024, we successfully organized the 17th International Scientific Conference and Professional Meeting of Gerontology Days. This year’s theme, “Cooperation,” served as the central thread connecting the numerous presentations delivered in both Hungarian and English. A Special Issue of Hungarian Gerontology (Vol. 16, 2024) has been prepared based on these presentations.   Message from the Guest Editor Special Issue

  It is with immense gratitude and reflection that I write this brief editorial as the guest editor for the Online International Gerontology Conference proceedings. The conference has concluded, leaving us with a wealth of knowledge, insightful discussions, and a renewed commitment to the field of gerontology.

  I extend my sincere appreciation to Dr. Habil Marianna Móré, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Debrecen, and Dr. Agnes Bene for the gracious invitation to contribute to this distinguished event. As we reflect on the proceedings, we find ourselves standing at the intersection of a profound demographic shift and a global commitment to addressing the challenges and opportunities associated with an ageing population. In the conference, the exploration of gerontology, which has proven to be more critical than ever, was guided by three overarching themes: "Ageing," "Well-being," and "Innovation." These themes direct our exploration of the complexities of ageing, strategies for promoting well-being in older adults, and the transformative power of innovation.

  The challenges we discussed were substantial, but the potential for progress was equally significant. Together, we navigated the complexities of ageing, delving into strategies for promoting well-being in older adults and embracing the transformative power of innovation. The multifaceted journey of ageing, rich in wisdom and resilience, was a focal point of our discussions, inspiring research and influencing policy decisions.

  The concept of well-being took centre stage, emphasizing not just longevity but a life filled with dignity, contentment, and meaning. Our exploration of various facets of well-being showcased the latest research and best practices, reaffirming our commitment to creating communities where older adults can live with dignity and flourish. The third theme, "Driving Innovation," highlighted the necessity for creative thinking and novel strategies in the ever-evolving field of gerontology. The conference provided a platform to learn about and discuss the latest innovations, positioning gerontologists at the forefront of this innovation-driven journey.

  As a guest editor, I am privileged to witness the impact of our collective efforts. The proceedings encapsulate the depth of our discussions, the diversity of perspectives, and the commitment of gerontologists, researchers, caregivers, and policymakers to driving positive change. The conference has not only enriched our understanding of gerontology but has also fortified our shared vision for a brighter future for older adults worldwide.

  I extend my heartfelt gratitude to each contributor for their valuable insights and dedication. The proceedings stand as a testament to the tireless work and collaborative spirit that defines the gerontological community. May this compilation serve as a lasting resource, inspiring further research, policy development, and innovations in the pursuit of enhancing the lives of older adults.   Dear Reader!
  
  Eleven papers covering various aspects of geriatrics and gerontology can be found in the 42nd regular issue of Hungarian Gerontology 2023. Three of the papers - one on senior care in the Philippines, one on the AGE Barometer's critical analysis, and our editorial board member Katalin Papp's presentation of the HOMeAge international project from the perspective of the reference group of older people -were published in English.
  
  Among the Hungarian contributions, several deal with the psychological aspects of ageing. For those interested, I recommend the papers of Anna Ferwagner and Lilla Kegyes.
  
  The issue includes a health science piece titled "Skincare for the elderly and massage," as well as several investigations with a social science focus. Mónika Fontanini presented and analysed the Italian dementia plan and dementia-friendly initiatives, while Dalma Tóth provided an insightful publication of what it means to age in cyberspace. The notion of elder abuse is presented in a paper, and the risk of poverty among seniors and those living on a low pension is examined in another analysis.  
  
  We would also like to draw the attention of the reader to our Conference to be held in 2024, the call for which is already available on the University of Debrecen Conference and Events website. We are looking forward to welcoming you as a speaker or participant at the International Scientific Conference on Gerontology Days 2024 on 10 October in Hungarian and on the International Conference Day on 11 October in English!   You can register for our Conference on the website. As in 2023, we hope to organise our 2024 Conference as an accredited professional meeting (in the social and health field).

  Dear Reader!
  The regular issue of Hungarian Gerontology 2022 contains 13 interesting articles on different areas of gerontology and geriatrics. Sveral publications deal with the current issues of ageing and digitalisation and robotic technologies, one study deals with new directions in geriatric rehabilitation, but the reader can also find empirical results on the psychological aspects of successful ageing or the values of the Roma population in relation to elderly care. The importance of writing in maintaining activity in old age is also discussed, as well as film analysis, book reviews, and reviews of scientific events.
  
  We would also like to draw the reader's attention to our yearly conference in 2023, with presentations in Hungarian on 12 October and in English on 13 October. We look forward to welcoming you as a speaker or participant on Gerontology Days 2023 International Scientific Conference!

  Part of the renewal of Hungarian Gerontology scientific journal is the effort to publish short summaries of the lectures at the International Gerontology Conference organized by the Research Workshop (University of Debrecen, Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Gerontology.

  In this way, we would like to contribute to the continuity of discussions between researchers and experts, by making abstracts available to readers in an easily accessible form, and perhaps here on the website of the magazine they will be interested to study publications in the regular issues of the journal and to be informed about the results of domestic and foreign research on the topic of gerontology.

  Dear Reader,
  The 2024 issue of Hungarian Gerontology presents a collection of nine scholarly articles that reflect the journal’s continued commitment to the multidisciplinary exploration of aging and gerontological research.
  In this issue, Dorina Markovics and colleagues investigate the association between multimorbidity in older adults and the corresponding prevalence of polypharmacy. Orsolya Savella and her co-authors explore the characteristics of menopause in later life and examine related aspects of health awareness. Also focusing on health sciences, Bassel Awnar Asaad and his research team discuss opportunities for improving healthcare systems in developing countries, using Syria as a case study.
  A significant portion of the issue is dedicated to various dimensions of active aging. Melinda Bede and Orsolya Pachner analyze the role of social relationships in promoting activity among older adults living both independently and in institutional care settings. Viktória Virágh introduces a theoretical framework for educational programs aimed at successful aging, with implications for social services targeting the elderly. Mónika Beck-Zaja presents the Digital Wellbeing project, implemented within library settings to support digital inclusion among older populations.
  This edition also features two book reviews. Andrea Toldi reviews Generations in Conflict: How Can We Understand Each Other? (2024) by Krisztián Steigervald, while Dalma Tóth offers a perspective on the book of Teri Szűcs’ The memory returned to me.
  Finally, in our science communication section, Mónika Nagyné Mudra highlights a best-practice model of collaboration between a retirement home and the Alzheimer Café program, demonstrating effective community engagement in dementia care.
  We hope that this issue provides valuable insights and contributes meaningfully to the field of gerontology.

  The Gerontology Days 2021 is the 14th annual scientific conference at the Faculty of Health of the University of Debrecen, which is unique not only because it is the only conference with a long history in this field organised by a Hungarian university, but also it is characterized by the diversity of the disciplines involved and by the diversity of the participants as well. In addition to academic researchers, lecturers and PhD students, professionals working in the field of elderly care and supporting for the elderly and other interested people listen to the lectures, participate in discussions, symposia and round tables.

  Thank you very much for the feedback (praise, criticism, suggestion, request) which are sent to us during and after the Conference!

  Introduction, aims:
  The COVID-19 pandemic caused invaluable harms on the World during last two years. Among all economic and societal consequences the negative effects for elderly people was also apparent. Researches - among others - focused on the age related inequalities for accessing and using services, economic disadvantages, the decline of psychical, physical and mental conditions, reduced quality of life, increased level of loneliness, stress and depression, such as the increase and new faces of ageism.
  This research focused on the individual and organizational consequences of COVID – 19 pandemic and the effects of the state interventions followed by. The target group were identified as active seniors who have leading positions in different local and regional senior’s associations. These people were affected individually as a member of the age group and as an experts with organizational responsibilities as well.

  Research method:
  We chose a qualitative follow up (longitudinal) research method that was committed by semi structured phone interviews, recorded and anonymised. The time of the two data record focused and followed the main Hungarian waves of the pandemic: May – June in 2020 and June – July in 2021. Sample were collected from all districts of Hungary (n=42).

  Main research topics were:
  - The situation of the older adults (experiences about the local older people, daily life, problems, issues, social connections)
  - The life in the organization (activities, new initiatives, problems, issues)
  - Individual experiences (fears, daily life, social connections, shopping habits, use of ICT, vaccination).

  Results:
  We found significant differences on the personal life situation and the perception of pandemic and related interventions during the two waves. Pandemic situation may influenced these results. The age related “stay at home campaign” made more difficulties for the older people during the first wave, meanwhile related interventions weren’t so strict during the second wave by introducing shopping timeline for older people and night curfew for all in the late nights. Even first wave did not cause such harm like the second one in Hungary.
  During the first wave we found older people as a rule following citizens. They followed all the restrictions and regulations strictly. Life situations mainly were determined by the living conditions, that is means the ones who lived in the countryside mainly a house with garden experienced less negative effects than those, who lived in the housing estate area (first wave mainly fall on March – May).
  Older people reported increased importance of the local authorities. With the lack of central supporting interventions, local authorities played main role for local support, care and security. If the local government took care of older people they felt safety. Less interventions and coordination made older people insecured.
  The second wave made new situations for people. Older adults became one of the first target groups in vaccination and people started to cope with the pandemic.
  Older adults became more critical with governmental interventions.
  Critics focussed on the
  - pandemic related communication, the vaccination (older people mainly got Shinofarm vaccine that was not accepted in the EU at that time),
  - difficulties with the availability of health services, and
  - they experienced increased economic problems.
  The life in the organization: during the first wave we found frozen life of the seniors organization, cancelled and delayed programmes. Some initiatives were also reported. People preferred to keep contact via phone instead of using another ICT tools. Some of the answerer worried about the community life, how they can restart after the pandemic, others preferred the forthcoming chance for personal meetings.
  Seniors organisations may play an important role of the senior’s life by organizing free time and social activities, advocacy, and many other aspects of active ageing. As we made a first extract of this research further analyse will focus more on the good examples and new initiatives on the social, community and organizational levels.

  Nagy örömmel nyújtom át a Magyar Gerontológia/Hungarian Gerontology legújabb, 2025-ös lapszámát, amely a modern időskor sokszínűségét és az aktív idősödés előmozdításának lehetőségeit járja körül. Jelen számunk célja, hogy interdiszciplináris keretben mutassa be azokat a fizikai, pszichológiai és társadalmi tényezőket, amelyek alapjaiban határozzák meg az idősebb generációk életminőségét. A kötet szakmai spektruma a klinikai prevenciótól a digitális szabadidő-felhasználásig terjed:

  • Fizikai egészség és prevenció: részletes elemzést olvashatnak a preszarkopéniás állapot kezelését célzó edzésprogramok hatékonyságáról , valamint a krónikus betegségek megelőzésében kulcsszerepet játszó modern táplálkozási irányelvekről.
  • Pszichológiai jóllét és módszertan: bemutatjuk az önegyüttérzésen alapuló intervenciók jelentőségét az érzelmi alkalmazkodásban. Emellett feltárjuk, hogyan segítheti a történetmesélés módszere a kognitív-viselkedésterápiás folyamatokat a szorongás leküzdésében.
  • Digitális világ és innováció: kiemelt figyelmet fordítunk az online játékok és a digitális szabadidő szerepére, amelyek az aktív idősödés új eszközeiként segítik a kognitív funkciók és a társas kapcsolatok fenntartását.
  • Társadalmi kihívások és inklúzió: szerzőink foglalkoznak az időskori szegénység rejtett arcával Magyarországon , valamint a marginalizált csoportok, például az LMBTQ+ közösségbe tartozó idősek speciális gondozási szükségleteivel és félelmeivel.
  • Rendszerszintű megközelítések: vizsgáljuk az egészségügyi együttműködések és a köz-magán szektor partnerségének szerepét az ellátórendszerek fejlesztésében, érvelve egy holisztikus és participatív gondozási modell mellett.

• Attitudes of Roma adults towards the care of their elderly relatives

  Caring for the elderly is a challenge for any society even if it is a family or institution related issue (Bánlaki 2006). Numerous researches on the care of the elderly have been published, which help to make the care of the elderly as effective as possible (Djellal, Gallouj 2006). Within the framework of our research, we undertook to examine the attitudes (Arlotti, Aguilar-Hendrickson 2017) and experiences of the Roma towards elderly care.
  Our aim was to explore the opinions of adult Roma people on the topic, as well as to identify possible cultural peculiarities in this issue (Hajime et al 2006; Da Roit 2010; Kehusmaa et al. 2013; Szabóné 2018).

  Method:
  We have selected Roma adult people living in Budapest as our target group, most of them perform manual labour, who in the near future are likely to face the issue of caring for their elderly relatives or are already facing it in the capital. We have chosen this target group because there is a wide range of social services in the capital, and this gives us an insight into the confidence or lack of confidence in the social care system. The situation of the Roma elderly in the Hungarian social context is discussed with a nuanced approach based on Roma studies. The opinions and thoughts of 20 Roma adults are highlighted in our presentation, with whom we interviewed. We compiled a semi-structured set of questions for the target group. We tried to capture the attitude of the Roma towards elderly care along different dimensions (Allport, Lindzey 1960; Örkény, Vári 2009): individual responsibility (Nárai 2019) patterns of the family (Bánlaky 2001), financial and other resources (Bourdieu 1999) - assistance, trust in the social care system, readiness for elderly care (Heimlich 2008). Our research was carried out in November 2021 in compliance with the measures associated witht he COVID-19 situation. The interviews took 40-75 minutes long on average per person.
  We compare international trends within formation on elderly care in Hungary and data on the health status of elderly Roma in Hungary (Kodner, 2006).

  Results:
  The uniqueness of our research lies in the fact that we present the strategies of the Roma related to care in the Hungarian social reality, we identify practical problems and challenges, which can even be a breeding ground for future social policy measures (Schwiter et al. 2015). Poverty among the Roma, as well as discrimination and lower life expectancy compared to non-Roma (KSH, 2015) all contribute to the decision-making of Roma adults regarding the care of their elderly relatives, which is confirmed by the answers found in the interviews and the possibilities and strategies formed by the elderly care system (Kovács 2006). Our results showed that access to various social benefits, such as home help and public health care among others is affected during elderly care, and also has a key role to play, but also information among the Roma. In addition to trust in the social care system, financial means or lack of the influence coping strategies for elderly care. The results obtained can be used even for prevention projects aimed at local health preservation, or for any program aimed at improving the health status of the Roma.

  The Gerontology Days 2021 is the 14th annual scientific conference at the Faculty of Health of the University of Debrecen, which is unique not only because it is the only conference with a long history in this field organised by a Hungarian university, but also it is characterized by the diversity of the disciplines involved and by the diversity of the participants as well.

  In addition to academic researchers, lecturers and PhD students, professionals working in the field of elderly care and supporting for the elderly and other interested people listen to the lectures, participate in discussions, symposia and round tables.

  Thank you very much for the feedback (praise, criticism, suggestion, request) which are sent to us during and after the Conference!

  In this Special Issue of the scientific journal, you can read the abstracts of the lectures given at the Conference.

  Tisztelt Olvasó! 

  A Magyar Gerontológia tudományos folyóirat megújulásának része az a törekvés is, hogy évente Konferencia Különszámban adjuk közre a Kutatóműhely (Debreceni Egyetem Egészségügyi Kar, Gerontológia Tanszék) szervezésében megrendezésre kerülő Nemzetközi Gerontológiai Konferencián elhangzó előadások rövid összefoglalóit. Ezzel hozzá szeretnénk járulni a kutatók és szakértők eszmecseréjének folyamatosságához úgy, hogy az absztraktok könnyen elérhető formában állnak az olvasók rendelkezésére, és talán itt a folyóirat honlapján ahhoz is kedvet éreznek majd, hogy a folyóirat rendes számait átlapozva tanulmányozzanak itt megjelent publikációkat és értesüljenek a gerontológia témakörét érintő hazai és külföldi kutatási eredményekről.

  A Magyar Gerontológia folyóirat e számában az idősödő társadalom különböző kérdéseivel foglalkozunk. Az aktív idősödés és a generációk közötti szolidaritás témájában írt Bekéné Zelencz Katalin és Lukács Attila szerzőtársunk. Katalin a generációk közötti feszültségek okait tárja fel tanulmányában, míg Attila az életmód, a táplálkozás és a fizikai aktivitás jelentőségét elemzi tanulmányában. Az időskori aktivitás másik fontos területére kalauzolja az olvasót Bene Ágnes tanulmánya, aki az élethosszig tartó tanulást elősegítő hazai kezdeményezéseket mutatja be és elemzi munkájában. Pék Győző „az időskori szerencsejáték zavar” című munkája hiánypótlónak tekinthető, e terület feltárása fontos eleme az időskorral összefüggő problémák komplexebb megismerésének. Patyán László tanulmánya a családi gondozás helyének és szerepének nemzetközi és hazai elemzésével a gondozást vállaló családtagok támogatásának rendszereit, illetve a hazai gondozáspolitika e területen érezhető rendszerszerű hiányát tárja fel. A magam és szerzőtársaim nevében is örömmel ajánlom folyóiratunkat az öregedéstudomány iránt érdeklődők számára.

  A Magyar Gerontológia folyóirat e számában az újonnan alakult Miskolci Akadémiai Bizottság Társadalom – és Humántudományi Gerontológia Munkabizottságának konferenciáján elhangzott előadások közleményit ismerhetik meg. A Munkabizottság aktivitása dicséretes tevékenységükkel bővítik a hazai gerontológiai irodalmat. E számunkban kapott helyet Dr. Boga Bálint visszatekintése a geroedukáció hazai megjelenésére, fejlődésére is. A visszatekintés műfaja talán kissé szokatlan, személyes hangvételű, hiszen szerzőnk aktív részese volt – és ma is aktív szereplője – a geroedukáció hazai kialakulásának és fejlődésének.

  Tisztelt Olvasóink!

  Örömmel ajánljuk figyelmükbe a Magyar Gerontológia folyóirat legújabb, 39. számát, melynek tudományos cikkeiben a következő témákat érintik szerzőink. Kovács Éva Katalin tanulmányában felhívja a figyelmet arra a tényre, miszerint – ahogy a gazdaság egyéb területein, úgy a családi gazdaságokra vonatkozóan is – az egyik legnagyobb kockázatot az utódlás megfelelő lebonyolítása jelentheti. Ideális helyzetként írja le azt az állapotot, amelynek során egy családi gazdaság évtizedeken, generációkon át egy család kezében marad, hiszen a vezetők tapasztalata, tudása, kapcsolati tőkéje gördülékenyebben adódhat át a fiatalabb családtagoknak. Ferwagner Anna és Pék Győző két cikkel is jelentkezett. Az elsőben azt vizsgálták, hogy hogyan élik meg életük utolsó szakaszát azok az idősek, akik ezekben az években maradandó alkotás létrehozását célzó alkotó tevékenységgel foglalkoznak. A másodikban pedig arra voltak kíváncsiak, hogy milyen flow- és antiflow-élményt élnek át különböző élethelyzetekben az idősek. Mindkét kutatás érdekes, elgondolkodtató és előremutató eredményeket hozott. Bene Ágnes, Móré Marianna és Zombory Júlia igen időszerű dolgozatukban az idősek szempontjait előtérbe helyezve elemezték a digitalizációs kor kihívásait. A pandémiát megelőző időszak helyzetképét rögzítették a szerzők a digitalizációnak az aktív idősödéssel kapcsolatos lényeges területeire nézve. Tudománynépszerűsítő cikkeink is komoly érdeklődésre tarthatnak számot. Az elsőben Arató András saját példáján keresztül lebilincselően számol be arról, hogyan vált egy 65 éves villamosmérnök egy véletlennek köszönhetően a világszerte ismert és kedvelt Hide the pain Harolddá. A másodikban Dobos László az EduSenior Karantén Képzési Program részeként megvalósult kérdőíves kutatás izgalmas eredményeit mutatja be. A vizsgálat 2020. május 5-től 2020. május 20-ig tartott. Zárásként ismételten ajánljuk a gerontológia tudománya iránt érdeklődők számára folyóiratunk aktuális számát, kellemes és tartalmas olvasást kívánunk!

  A Magyar Gerontológia folyóirat e számában az idősödés társadalmi összefüggéseinek számos fontos kérdését tárgyalják szerzőink. Az időskorúak gondozásának egyik nagy kihívása a család gondozói feladatainak, terheinek vizsgálata áll Tróber Anett Mária, Széman Zsuzsa és Kiss Gabriella kutatásainak középpontjában. Csinády Adriána a nagyszülői szerepek hátterét elemzi. Szilvásiné Bojda Márta cikke a nyíregyházi Alzheimer Café mozgalom elindításainak tapasztalatairól számol be. Égerházi Anikó és szerzőtársai a demencia vizsgálat új módszerét honosították és tesztelték, ennek kutatási eredményeiről számolnak be. Az aktív idősödés kérdéskörében több publikációt is közlünk, melyek az idősek fogyasztói szerepével, a fogyasztóvédelem jelentőségével a fizikai aktivitás fontosságával, valamint az időskorúak környezetében lévő állatok hatásával (állatterápia) foglalkoznak. Boga Bálint pedig az esztétikum idősödésben betöltött szerepét elemzi dolgozatában.

  The research programme was conducted by the 3. Age University Foundation, the Human and Gerontology Session of the MATB, Hungarian Scientific Academy and the University of Miskolc. The research was a part of the complex programme called EduSenior Quarantine Programme that provided various programmes for older adults during the quarantine time in 2020. This study presents the main findings of the survey.
