    Hungarian statistical surveys, as well as previous research, point out the disadvantages experienced by persons with disability and a reduced work capacity on the labour market, due to which their employment falls behind the employment of the average population. In the background of these drawbacks, there are partially negative attitudes in the society and among employers which are based on prejudices. On the other hand, in the course of the integration and permanent employment of persons with disability and a reduced work capacity not only the accepting attitude of employers but also that of employees is essential. Employment policy instruments may facilitate the economic activity of the disadvantaged labour market groups but they may need their employers to help them further with employment, integration and work. The expected or received help of the open labour market or its degree do not always meet. No empirical research has been done into this topic yet. The aim of my research is to explore the attitude, approach, and knowledge of workers in social institutions in three districts of Hajdú-Bihar county and of the inhabitants in these districts regarding persons with disability and reduced work capacity. Questionnaire research was conducted, and altogether 747 persons (408 workers at social institutes and 339 citizens) were interviewed. The present study focuses on the exploratory-like results of the research which reveal the test groups’ familiarity with and knowledge of the application of those HR management tools that can further the employment of persons with reduced work capacity. The study assesses the results based on the following variables: sex, school qualification, position, previously gained knowledge about the reduced work capacity and work experience with persons with reduced work capacity. The results of the research suggest that for persons with a reduced work capacity the organisations mainly ensure the personalised field of work, preferential working hours, and accessible work environment, but it is not certain to be enough for the permanent employment of the target group as due to their mobility difficulties they would really need support to get to their work as well.

  • THE EXPERIENCES OF PHYSIOTHERAPY IN PRESCHOOLS IN THE LIGHT OF A KINDERGARTEN RESEARCH IN HAJDÚBÖSZÖRMÉNY

    The literature and research on physiotherapy in Hungary are not as complete as the research on physical education, so this article is also incomplete. Our research aimed to report on the experiences of physiotherapy sessions for preschool children within the physical education sector, as this area is less researched. Our research presents the experiences of children and their parents who have participated in pre-school physiotherapy in a sample of children attending the Good Shepherd Reformed Kindergarten in Hajdúböszörmény. The results are presented based on the analysis of a questionnaire filled in by 50 parents and an interview with the physiotherapy teacher who teaches in the kindergarten. The survey shows that 8% of parents of preschool children did not know that their child was attending such sessions, 92% of parents were informed, but 20% did not know how many development sessions their child was attending. The majority of parents follow up on their child's development, but consider the information provided by the teacher to be insufficient. The vast majority of parents were also aware of their child's diagnosis. Parents' opinions showed that they consider the existence of physiotherapy sessions important, as they consider it essential for the effective development of a growing organism. Parents also noted positive effects of physiotherapy sessions, such as improved posture, flexibility, reduced orthopaedic deformities, increased endurance, or improved dexterity and hand-foot coordination. Another important aspect, according to parents, is that these sessions are free of charge, take place during nursery school hours and they are playful. According to the physiotherapy teacher, the number of sessions is not sufficient to achieve optimal improvement, given that the vast majority of children only receive development in kindergarten. These results are useful and can be used in the training of kindergarten teachers or further training courses.

  • COMPARISON OF THE FAMILIARITY OF GRADE 4 ROMA AND NON-ROMA SCHOOL CHILDREN WITH SOME BIOLOGICAL TERMS IN ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

    Most of the Roma settlements in Croatia are spatially segregated from the settlements of the majority population. Specific cultural elements constitute the ethnic border towards the local population, making it difficult and reducing the possibility of their integration into the majority population. One of the results of that segregation is the unfamiliarity of the Roma children with the language of the majority population. This unfamiliarity with the Croatian language is a big obstacle for the integration of the Roma children into Croatian society through school education. Starting from Grade 1 they follow the regular school curriculum. Two of the subjects that are taught from the very beginning of their primary school education are Natural Science and English as a foreign language. In this paper, the authors present the results (statistical analysis and discussion) of their research study. It compares the familiarity of Roma and Non-Roma Grade 4 children (age 10) with some biological terms in English as a foreign language. Based on the results of their research, the authors suggest modifications of the school curriculum for Roma children that would enable their better school achievement and subsequently their easier integration into Croatian society.

  • THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MENTAL HEALTH AND LEISURE SPORT

    Thanks to today’s accelerated world, the number of mental illnesses has multiplied, and chronic stress, lack of self-confidence, depression are all present in people’s everyday lives. Just as physical activity is essential for the existence of physical health, so physical activity is essential for maintaining and improving mental health. The research examines the mental health and sports habits of the next generation. Focusing on stress management ability, the importance of stress relief. Examining the answers obtained, we primarily compare the sports habits of the examined persons with the mental factors in order to explore the connections. During the research, as a primary procedure, we conducted a questionnaire survey, in the framework of which we analyzed the responses of 331 people. 72.3% of young people living in Debrecen chose grade 3-4 (on a scale of 4) when asked about their degree of stress management skills. In the same survey, 52.5% of young adults who do not engage in sports feel that they have good or near-good stress management skills. A 19.8% higher proportion of athletes responded from their experience that they have good stress management skills than individuals who do not engage in sports or rarely do so. Respondents consider helping concentration (rated 5.8 on a scale of 7) and stress relief (5.8) to be the most important positive effects of sport. Respondents, regardless of which category they belong to in terms of sports habits, consider stress relief as a factor affecting mental health in sport. 85% of athletes and 80.7% of non-athletes consider the stress-relieving effect of sport to be important, so the result presents only a 4.3% difference, which is negligible. Yet this can be accounted for as a positive, as non-athletes are also aware of the widely accepted fact that one of the effects of sport on mental health is stress relief.

  • ROMA UNIVERSITY STUDENTS' IDEAS ON THE CHOICE OF PARTNERS:

    Finding the right partner can improve the individual’s financial situation, help him/her achieve his/her goals, and support his/her mental health. It may also have an impact on the integration of Roma partners into the majority of society. Roma young people studying in higher education may have different options of choosing a partner than their (Roma) lower-educated peers. The cost of further education is often the lack of early marriage, which is common in the traditional Roma community, while the benefit can be the development of a wider network of contacts by getting to know university colleagues. In our research, we examined the choice of a partner of a special group of Roma university students, the Roma college students concerning their ideas about this and their practical implementation. The study is based on the EVS (European Value Survey) questionnaire on relationships filled in by the respondents and structured life path interviews (N=186). Based on the survey, the college students included in the study did not consider the origin of their partner to be relevant, while in practice they preferred a similar partner related to the origin and education. The Roma college can also function as a field for choosing partners, and many of the students have chosen their partners from here. In Roma colleges, students are placed in a peer community that supports them through further education. Among their peers, they can even find a partner who is similar to them not only in his/her origin but also in his/her education.

  • THE APPEARANCE OF MASSAGE AS A SERVICE CATEGORY IN THE OFFER OF HOTELS IN THE NORTHERN GREAT PLAIN

    Background: Massage is one of the main categories of wellness tourism and is one of the most popular, so it is no accident that it is included in the hotel offerings. Research proves the effectiveness of massage and its benefits in the treatment of various injuries, diseases, reduction of pain, muscle tension, and anxiety. Not only does it have a positive effect on health, but it plays an important role in relaxation, so it is no coincidence that it is one of the most popular wellness services. Hotel guests include massage as an important factor in choosing a destination. Aims: Because of the importance of tourism in the Northern Great Plain, our research looked at the role that massage services play in the supply of elements in the region's 3-5 star hotels. We surveyed 50 hotels (18 three-star, 31 four-star, 1 five-star) through a questionnaire and website analysis for their services and offerings. Results: Our results showed that the majority of the examined hotels have massage services, although to varying degrees. The most common types of massage are refreshing, vitalizing massage, foot massage, Swedish massage, aromatherapy massage, and relaxing, stress-relieving massage, but there are also many special types of massage. Conclusion: The conclusion of our research is that experience, pampering, and health consciousness appears not only in the factors influencing people's choice of the resort but also in the offerings of hotels.

    Thy system of higher education can be analysed from the aspects of inequalities. The chance of attendance, the achievement, the phenomenon of drop-out, and types of training programs are approached from the students’ social background. Our analysis focuses on the chance of graduation of first-in-family people. The relatively rigid feature of Hungarian society and the lower mobility rate create a specific background for our research. Hungarian Youth Survey 2016 and 2020 databases were used during this analysis and we separated the subsample of young people between 25 and 29 (N2016= 2906, N2020=2874). We try to discover the patterns of parents’ educational reproduction, describe the features of first-in-family people, and identify those factors which can form the chance of graduation. A binary regression model was run by us in which the dependent variable was the obtaining of a degree and the list of independent variables contained socio-demographic variables (sex, type of settlement, the economic situation of the region, economic situation, parental educational level, the type of parental profession), different life events (crises, the number of children, etc.) and the identification with the parental lifestyle. With these results, we can identify such an intersectional life situation (being a woman, habitation in cities, more favourable economic situation, mother’s white collar work, medium parental educational level, without children) in which the chance of graduation is higher.

  • THE SOCIO-DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS AND ACADEMIC PREPAREDNESS OF STEM STUDENTS IN HUNGARY

    Although the dropout behavior and labor market opportunities of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) students and the masculinization of STEM fields are all well-researched topics in STEM research, there is a very limited body of literature focusing on the social background and academic preparedness of STEM applicants. Thus, in this research, we compared STEM and non-STEM students based on their type of settlement, type of secondary school program, the rate of students coming from a disadvantaged background, extra points given for academic accomplishments, and total application score. To identify variables that significantly predict getting admitted to a STEM field, we conducted binary logistic regression. During our research, we conducted the analysis using the 2017 Hungarian Admission Database. Our sample consisted of those who got admitted to a full-time BA/BSc or undivided course (N = 41324). According to our results, STEM students cannot be identified as a disadvantaged group either in terms of their social background or their lack of academic preparedness. According to the results of the binary logistic regression, the main predictors of getting admitted to a STEM field are gender (male), having a language certificate, and having a vocational training certificate. The main goal of our research was to explore whether the individual characteristics of STEM students can be the reason behind the high attrition rates specific to STEM fields. Since our results did not support this conclusion, we suppose to further investigate the role of institutional variables (such as climate, the selective approach of college teachers, and high academic expectations) in dropouts.

    The study intends to describe and compare the characterology and image of woman of the 19th -century philosopher, Arthur Schopenhauer and Otto Weininger, a philosopher-psychologist living at the turn of the 19-20th century. The philosophy of Schopenhauer and Weininger represents surprising coincidence concerning the role of woman in life, the differences between the two genders, and the inferiority of women. With some smaller digressions – such as the function of psychology, character and gender, the duality of gender roles, and the woman as a diametrical human being - we get hold of a picture of the two philosophers’ theory. The current study tends to introduce a kind of psychology which can be regarded as a psychological attempt preceding today’s psychology; furthermore, it examined the relationship system of individual and genders from an absolutely different perspective.

  • Moderate-Risk Prematurity does not Hinder the Development of Reading and Spelling Abilities Despite the Lower IQ

    Background and aims: It is well established that the impacts of prematurity are often long-lasting in the various domains of development, however, the published findings concerning the prevalence, severity, and background of disorders are inconsistent. As yet research into the development of abilities contributing to the academic progress in Hungarian preterm children has been scarce. Our study aimed to find out to what extent prematurity impeded the reading and spelling abilities in school age and to contribute some information on the cognitive background of the performances. Methods: Three groups of 7 – 12 year-old children participated in the study. The target group consisted of moderate-risk preterms. For comparison two groups of full-term children were tested: typically developing good readers and dyslexics. To assess the reading and spelling abilities the Hungarian version of the 3DM (Dyslexia Differential Diagnosis) was used. Cognitive abilities were assessed using the Hungarian adaptation of the WISC-IV and the Rey Complex Figure Test. Results: The reading and spelling performances of the full-term good readers and the preterms did not differ and the preterms scored higher than the dyslexics. The cognitive tests did not offer any direct explanation to this, since the preterms lagged behind the full-term good readers in the WISC-IV full-scale IQ as well as in several specific cognitive measures. The CART Decision Tree served to analyse the relationships, allowing to reveal the interactions and the moderation effects. Discussion: The CHC model as a theoretical framework and the CART Decision Tree statistical analysis proved to be fruitful to disentangle the complex interplay of the cognitive background factors. There are various cognitive paths of acquiring the reading and spelling skills, e.g., in case of relatively lower IQs the sufficient levels of memory and processing speed may ensure success.

  • The Analysis of Early School Leaving from the Aspect of Inter-Sectionality

    Hungary ranks in the bottom third of the European Union regarding early school leaving, falling further and further away from the EU average year on year. The lower educational attainment and higher drop-out rates of Roma/Gypsy youth have been confirmed by several studies. Still, the descriptions are often two-dimensional, as in international approaches. The Hungarian Youth 2020 database allowed for a wider range of explanatory variables in the analysis. In our study, we examine the educational attainment of Roma youth aged 20-29 and then compare subsamples of Roma and non-Roma dropouts. Finally, we run a binary regression model on the database with early school leaving as the dependent variable and explanatory variables as background variables that may shape the odds of early school leaving. The social and economic backgrounds of Roma and non-Roma ESL learners differed, while parental education and subjective financial situation showed a less favourable pattern for Roma. The effect of Roma identity was significant in the regression model, but the explanatory power did not reach the effect of lower parental education. In other words, ethnic background is a crucial factor in dropout, while some segments of the family background are more significant.

    Stuttering is a disability of tempo and rhythm in the speech that students, special education teachers, and speech therapists face in their daily work. Previously, stuttering has been researched from the perspective of speech therapy and speech therapists. This research is however based on the opinions of the youngsters in question. One percent of the population are considered stutterers as per Guitar’s (1998) theory — which would mean that in Estonia, approximately 1,500 students are stutterers. Students spend a large and valuable part of their day and leisure time at school. It is therefore essential that teachers and advisors are aware and competent in providing support to stuttering students as needed. These students do not receive enough support and attention, as stuttering is considered a disability that does not distract teachers from doing their job. It can be assumed that teachers do not change their methods and systems in evaluating a stuttering student. It is nevertheless crucial that the student with the impediment feels safe and good at school and can express their thoughts in speech. The aim of this research is to find out how stuttering students cope in their school environment. The research also focuses on the experiences of teachers and support specialists in order to understand their cooperation when assisting a stuttering student.

  • ATTITUDES TOWARDS THE SPORT OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES, I. E.: IS THE SPORT IMPORTANT IN THE LIVES OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES?

    The equal opportunities approach of the second half of the 20th century emphasizes the social inclusion of disadvantaged groups, including persons with disabilities. Education and employment play a key role in achieving integration. Nevertheless, other fields such as leisure time and sporting activities also contribute positively to the social involvement of persons with disabilities. At present nearly 7,000 persons with disabilities are registered in Hungary who pursue sports competitively, of whom approximately 5,000 persons with intellectual disabilities (Regényi et.al, 2017). The study discloses the partial results of a research aimed at revealing the awareness of the Hungarian population regarding the sport of people with disabilities. As such research has never been carried out in Hungary before, it can fill in a niche. The results of our exploratory research may be the starting point for further investigations. The importance of the topic is given by the fact that thanks to the sport the focus is on the outstanding performance of the social group concerned rather than on their limitations and deficiencies, which therefore reinforces the positive and accepting attitude of citizens. Previous research findings have highlighted that the nature of disability-related knowledge influences the way the members of society think about persons with disabilities, i.e. when it is possible to provide information and gain experience focusing on the existing abilities and strengths of the above -mentioned group, attitudes become more positive as well.  The findings of the research reveal that respondents consider it important to pursue sport within an integrated framework, at the same time they feel it is justified to do segregated sports with a view to persons with disabilities. Based on the results we can state that the media coverage of achievements in sports competitions of persons with disabilities is perceived as low level, but apparently it is not considered to be a key area in the lives of persons with disabilities.

  • THE USE OF ENGLISH MEDIA IN EARLY CHILDHOOD

    The flow of information in the digital age is facilitated not only by traditional media such as television, radio, and print but also by new media such as the internet, desktops, and integrated computers, tablets, and smartphones, etc. The presence of IT tools is quite common these days among kindergarten-aged children (3-6/7), and even toddlers can use them on a daily basis. Moreover, modern pedagogy is unthinkable without digital devices that have become integral parts of innovations such as game-based learning, media-based learning, and edutainment. There are several language schools and bilingual creches where they accept very young children and babies. It is said that parents know their child best and children spend a lot of time with their parents. In consequence, this provides an excellent opportunity for parents to raise a bilingual child even if it is not his/her first language. In our paper we are combining these two, currently, central issues: the use of English-language media and early childhood language-learning, as only limited research is available about it. We are going to present the results of empirical research carried out mainly in kindergartens in Debrecen, which focused on early second language learning and the children’s use of media. Our research has two goals, so the questionnaires asked parents about the use of foreign-language media, its content and the time children spend consuming English content. In addition, we were interested in the parents’ attitude to their children’s English-language media use. We analyzed our data in the framework of early second language learning. Our research was carried out within the Early Childhood Research Group run by the Faculty of Education for Children and Special Educational Needs of the University of Debrecen. The research was carried out between October 2016 and January 2017.

  • MANIFESTATION OF AGGRESSION IN THE CREATIVITY TESTS

    Although the research of interaction of aggression and creativity dates back to the beginning of the early 1900, the possibility of creativity tests to use to examine aggression is novel. In the present study (as a pre-study of long-term research which aimed to create and validate an aggression index) we focus on frequency and correlations of aggressive responses which manifest in creativity tests. Methods. We analyze the differences and correlations of a number of aggressive responses which were given to stimuli the Unusual Uses and the Circle test (verbal and nonverbal creativity tests; N = 356 people). According to our results, the numbers of aggressive responses to the different stimuli of creativity tests: a)  are significantly different (p<0,001), b) do not correlate with each other widely (max r=0,414), c) depend on sample-variables of gender and age. In the case of creativity tests, we think it is possible to elaborate on a special aggression index, but during this work, we have to consider the results of this study.

  • CONTEMPORARY SOCIAL PROCESSES OF NAGYECSED, WITH SPECIAL REGARD TO THE SITUATION OF THE ROMA POPULATION

    Our research carried out in Nagyecsed is part of a longer series of research consisting of ten items, in which we primarily seek to map the main social characteristics and current social processes of settlements with the lower populations in the less-favoured regions of the country. In the course of the research, our goal is basically to get to know and present the perspectives of the local residents. A crucial consideration in the selection of the research sites was that smaller settlements in these peripheral regions are experiencing rather unfavourable socio-demographic trends, including in particular the declining population, aging, and the growing proportion of disadvantaged populations, including disadvantaged Roma. These processes - if no significant changes take place - project an even more unfavourable vision than at present. The unfavourable socio-demographic tendencies can be clearly seen in Nagyecsed. In connection with this, the main goal of the research is to explore the situation of the Roma, as well as the local community relations, especially the coexistence characteristics of the Roma and non-Roma population.

  • COLLEGE STUDENT’S LIFE STYLE AND THEIR ATTITUDE TO SPORTS

    The authors study by using questionnaires the amount of time spent by college students at the Applied Humanities and Pedagogy Faculty of Szent István University (n=127) on body hygiene, sleeping, meal, participation in lessons, active-passive exploitation of free time. Results: Meal – the students consume in great amount chocolates, chips while their fruit and vegetable consummation seem backward. Move the proportion of students doing regular physical education is no more than 21 %, 55% are not involved in any sporting activities, 13 % do not like anybody's movement. Others 39 % of the students spent more than 1-2 hours daily in front of a computer or TV set. The results suggest that in the teacher candidates’ scale of values the place of health falls too much behind.

  • CONNECTIONS BETWEEN SOCIODEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS AND ATTITUDES TOWARDS EMPLOYEES WITH DISABILITIES

    Since the annexation to the European Union, exceptional attention has been directed to equal opportunities and equal treatment of disadvantaged social groups in Hungary too. The Hungarian state tries to ensure the first and foremost with legal tools. It is, however, not enough to result in lasting changes in the attitude of society. Personal experiences, as well as, positive messages transmitted by others can produce a positive effect on the development of inclusive approaches. With respect to sociodemographic characteristics (e.g. gender, age, school qualification) investigations into this field suggest different research results. The questionnaire data collection took place in three districts of Hungary. The research was aimed at questioning two test groups, on one hand, the employees of social institutions who mainly deal with disadvantaged persons, on the other hand, the residents of the given districts, who have the knowledge and approach of an average citizen.  The ingenuity of the research is put down to the fact that in Hungary there had never been researching to explore the attitudes of social employees. A total of 747 persons filled in the questionnaires, out of which 408 employees in social institutions and 339 district residents. This present study discloses the deeper connections of the research results which are observable between the two test groups’ attitudes to persons with disabilities and sociodemographic characteristics. Its significance is crucial in identifying the characteristics of the colleague playing an actual role in the integration who, as a reference person, with his own personal involvement can promote the integration of disabled persons into workplace communities. In the research of attitudes three well-distinguished clusters were outlined, which were named as follows: accepting, uncertain/indifferent, rejecting. The study investigates what kind of sociodemographic characteristics the residents, and social workers who belong to the three clusters have. Do people who belong to the same cluster posses similar attributes in both test samples?  What kind of attributes has the residents and social workers got who show a higher level of acceptance?  According to the findings of the research, the attitudes of the district residents differ in age, school qualification, and personal experience, whereas in the case of the social workers the difference in attitudes depends on age and school qualification.

  • EFFECTS OF LABOR MARKET INTEGRATION, IN PARTICULAR CHANGES IN BEHAVIOR AND QUALITY OF LIFE

    The program you want to show is novel because it provides assistance to job seekers who face mental, social, or health problems, it also provides a complex service package that includes labor market, social and health services. The program can respond individually to the existing difficulties, thus improving the quality of life of the participants. The aim of the study is to examine the factors that determine the behavioral changes and the quality of life quality among the job seekers who can't be included in employment for mental, social, or health reasons. Methods: In our study, we monitored changes in general well-being, livelihoods, financial backgrounds, family backgrounds, health problems, work-related problems, social services, and healthcare services during the five months of the program, and analyzed the results obtained by quantitative and qualitative methods. Conclusion: Well-being has a positive effect on both the subjective emotional experiences of employees, their work performance, and their workplace behavior. We think that society should pay attention to sensitizing employers, develop insurance programs for complex packages of support, to ensure workplace factors influencing the improvement of the quality of life for workers' attention. The quality of life of our study confirmed that adequate support (mentoring, counseling, through programs supporting), to increase job satisfaction, workplace, which has many advantages in terms of not only the individual, but employers and society: improving the quality of work, the Workplace behavior and morale, less absenteeism, lower sickness, and fluctuation rates, and employment rate increases.

    The Covid epidemic has highlighted that the health care system alone is not enough to tackle a pandemic affecting a large population. In addition to medical and public health activities, there is also a need for educational activities in the education subsystem, involving the professionals involved. This is why it is important to look at the issue of health education in schools from a historical perspective, given the epidemics of our time. In the turbulent social and political environment following the First World War, public health was a less favoured area for policy-makers, while the physical and psychological trauma of soldiers returning from the war and the health of those left behind was a serious problem. The virulent Spanish flu, which affected millions of families across Europe, the devastating tuberculosis in our country, but especially the diphtheria and influenza, which were dangerous for children, posed a serious challenge to the scientific and educational scene in Hungary. The spread of a healthy lifestyle and education was not helped by the environment of schools (attitude of the maintenance staff, quality of the built environment, sociocultural tradition of the rural population, rapid spread of urban life). The alternative health approach and the life reform movement, although sporadically emerging in the period, did not appear in the mainstream of pedagogy, and health education progressed slowly, while, for example, child mortality, which is also linked to the health-conscious behaviour of parents, was blatantly high. The appointment of Kuno Klebelsberg as minister (1922) can be seen as a paradigm shift, as he is not only exposed as a minister with considerable experience in state administration, but also as a conceptual cultural politician who understood the challenges of education and popular education at the micro and macro levels. In our research, we analysed the relevant issues of the People's Teachers' Journal - a standard-setting publication of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, which serves as a guide for teachers in practice - using qualitative thematic content analysis. The selected period: 1922–1924. Our questions are: how is the situation of school health reflected in the journal? What roles and tasks do and would policy-makers delegate to the folk teachers? What extracurricular tasks do they assign to teachers in the field of health education? Are there any patterns in the discourse in relation to school leaders? How have the teachers' organisations received it and what suggestions have they made to policy-makers and practitioners?

  • PARENTAL FACTORS INFLUENCING SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENTS OF PUPILS IN ILORIN METROPOLIS, KWARA STATE

    The purpose of this study was to evaluate how parental influences affected students' academic performance in the Kwara State capital of Ilorin. Researchers have expressed worry over students' low academic performance in school, and it is commonly acknowledged that for students to fully benefit from their education, their parents must give them their entire support. The research was a survey. All primary school teachers in the city of Ilorin made up the study's population, and a mixed method approach was used on a sample of 215 respondents (of whom 200 completed questionnaires and 15 participated in interviews). Simple random and selective sampling methods were used to choose the sample. The data was gathered via a survey called the "Parental Factors Influence School Achievements of Children Questionnaire" (PFISAPQ).  The factors taken into account were gender, age, educational background, and number of years of teaching experience. Demographic information was expressed as a percentage, and the two null hypotheses were tested using the 2-way ANOVA statistical tool at the 0.05 level of significance. Mean and rank order analysis was used to analyze the research questions, and thematic analysis was then used to analyze the subsequent questions raised to support the main research questions. The results showed that, among other things, parental involvement, parental oversight, parental involvement in extracurricular activities, parental academic background, parental interest in education, and parent-child relationships are the primary factors positively affecting children's academic success. Also, significant differences existed in the parental factors influencing school achievements of pupils as expressed by primary school teachers based on gender, age, educational qualification, and years of teaching experience. It was recommended that parents should be encouraged to improve their involvement in children’s academic activities by supporting them and being actively involved in encouraging pupils to learn and achieve maximally in school.

  • A THEORETICAL PERSPECTIVE ON THE THERAPEUTIC ROLE OF CHILDREN'S FOLK SONGS

    Starting from the idea that treating a problem is done more efficiently when we address the causes that generated it than when dealing with symptoms, respectively from theories that claim that most of the mental disorders have their roots in the mother-child relationship developed in the early childhood, through the paper entitled A Theoretical Perspective on the Therapeutic Role of Children's Folk Songs we intend to argue the more use of songs from children's folklore in music therapy. Thus, in the first part of the paper, we bring to the attention of the main theories that demonstrate the importance of the mother-child relationship from the early childhood in order to a healthy evolution of the child from the point of view of its psychic development, with special emphasis on their expression through vocal singing. In the second part of the study, we propose to approach the defense mechanisms from the perspective of the positive functions that it performs in the case of normal persons, as a defense mechanism and defense behavior. In the third part of the paper, we present an analysis of the repertoire of songs from the children's folklore from the perspective of the content of ideas, of the structure of the melodic line, of the specific rhythms, as a mirror of the relationships that children develop with themselves and with others, in particular with my mother. In the fourth part of the paper, we argue the use of songs from children's folklore in music therapy in order to trigger certain memories from the first childhood so that the traumas that have not been overcome are then treated properly. The paper concludes with some final considerations.

  • NEW APPROACH TO ANALYSIS OF HIGHLY QUALIFIED YOUNG WORKERS: THE PRECARIATE

    The study focuses on the labour-market situation of young graduates utilizing the database of the Hungarian Graduate Tracking System. The purpose of the research is to map certain characteristics of the precarious situation posed by the labor market on this group which is in a rather favorable labor market position in comparison to other groups. The concept of the precariat is defined as a type of labor-market uncertainty, in which unfavorable working conditions, like insecure short-term jobs, fixed-term employment contracts, low wages, etc. are concentrated. In addition to the lack of financial security, these characteristics may lead to general insecurity and in some cases to labor market and social exclusion (LaVaque-Manty 2012, Standing 2012). This analysis focuses on the presence of a precarious condition that creates an insecure labour-market situation among young graduates and it attempts to find the main explanatory variables in the interpretation of this phenomenon. In addition, it investigates whether socio-demographic, socio-cultural characteristics, like gender, marital status, type of qualification (BSc, MSc, or Ph.D. degree), and the type of settlement (village, town, city, etc.) affect success in the labour-market. Preliminary results support previous studies that found women in the labor market were disadvantaged. For example, the proportion of women with a fixed employment contract is higher than men, and the interruption of a labor market career is more characteristic of women. More women gave a positive answer to ”I am not working at the moment although I have previously had a workplace”. This suggests that women are more affected by a less stable and less secure labor market than men.

  • CONTEMPORARY SOCIAL PROCESSES IN HAJDÚDOROG

    Our research conducted in Hajdúdorog is a part of a longer, multiple part research series, in which we will identify the main social features and map the current social processes in the less populous settlements of the more deprived regions of the country in particular. Basically, the aim of our research is to understand and present the perspective of the local people. The decisive criterion for the selection of research sites was that the smaller settlements of these peripheral regions are subject to rather unfavorable socio-demographic processes, including in particular the decline in the population, aging, and the increase in the share of the disadvantaged populations. These processes – unless there are significant changes – project an even more unfavorable vision of the future. The adverse socio-demographic processes described above are definitely observable in Hajdúdorog. Related to this, the primary objective of the research was to understand the opportunities, goals, and vision of the local youth most affected by migration, as well as to recognize the local community relations and the characteristics of cohabitation of the Roma and non-Roma population in particular.
