  • RECRUITMENT AND FUTURE ORIENTATION OF DISADVANTEGED CHILDREN

    In Hungary, many children live in state care. In order to curb its social reproduction, it is important to see recruitment: Who are they? Where and why did they get into state care? We have to deal with the future vision, motivation, self-efficacy, cause-attribution, social integration of young people, and their ideas about them. The aim of our research is to explore the differences in the future orientation of disadvantaged young people living in orphanages and families, which were measurable by analyzing their study average, by using a vision questionnaire and a self-report questionnaire to reveal family background, and by using the Tenessee self-image scale. The study involved 60 children and young adults living in an orphanage and 60 children and young adults living in a family. Both groups consist of young people aged between 15 and 20, born between 1999 and 2004. The aim of the study was to compare the future orientation of the disadvantaged children living in an orphanage with the also disadvantaged children attending Arany János Talent Care Program but living in a family, and also to identify the differences or similarities between them. The statistical analysis found that there was a positive correlation between the vision questionnaire and the background questionnaire. Most of the questions in the two questionnaires are related.

    The current paper aims to shed light on the problem of Roma students' school performance through the perception of teachers. We examine the phenomenon at the level of locality, relying on qualitative research methodology. The empirical data collection was carried out at the István Király Baptist Primary School in Kótaj, in the county of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg, during which semi-structured interviews were recorded (N=15).

    The current paper is based on the conception that Kuwaiti people are forgetting their stories and it is largely down to the fact that the new generation of Kuwait hardly remember the fictional figures of the Tantal, Al Seolu, Sehaila Um Al­Khalajeen, Um Al­Sa’af Wa­Alleef, Al­Duaidea, Bu Darya, which is mainly due to historical and social background.   • THE IMPACT OF CONTINUOUS AND DIFFERENTIATED EDUCATION FOR FORMING OF COMMUNITY ATTITUDE IN STUDENTS OF SENIOR CLASSES

    Background and objectives: In longitudinal research (2006–2010) we examined the progression of upper elementary school students’ self-assessment, self-image, attitude toward community, and change in their anxiety level in order to find out to what degree carefully planned and continuously differentiated education influence these traits of students’ behaviour. In this present study, we address the change in their attitude toward the community.   Method: We used the measurement tool developed by Hunyadyné and modified by Tóth for measuring the attitude toward the community (Appendix 1). Hypothesis: We assumed that as a result of differentiation the upper elementary school students’ attitude toward community will progress earlier and more effectively in the pilot than the control group (school community, the society; the class’ cohesion force, self-government’s role and competence, the function of public opinion, potential sociometric relation within the class, group activities). Results: The controlled and planned differentiated development made the areas of attitude toward community advance more in the pilot group than in the group going under only scarce differentiated development. We experienced significant differences in the scales of relation to the broader community, group activity, and class cohesion. Conclusions: Results justify that appropriate differentiated development has got an advantageous impact on attitude toward the community.

    The fundamental concept of the paper is in accordance with the thesis of pedagogical anthropology claiming that the school success of students in minority status is in strictly correlation with the recognition of the cultural difference by the education system. From the point of view of empirical researches related to pedagogical anthropology and education of sociology, the conceptualization of culture and cultural difference is a vital important factor. The paper intends to elaborate on the possible interpretation of these notions based on the relevant national and international literature.

    Because of the three religions are involved in the social life in Israel, not only the society and everyday life are very complex, but its educational system as well. The religious, political, cultural, and economic diversity of society has left a strong impression on education, including the educational provision of minority students. The topic of the writing is the education in Israel, including the most disadvantaged group, the past of the Bedouin pupils and their current situation. Nowadays, Bedouins make up one-third of the Negev population (210,000 people) who have been constantly turning from semi-nomadic lifestyles into living in the past decades. About 90,000 people live in unknown villages and camps, which in itself poses serious difficulties for Israeli education policy. The article gives an overview of the changes in Bedouin's social situation in the past 60-70 years, the circumstances of the first school, the effectiveness of the Bedouin pupils, their opportunities for further education, and its characteristics. In order to understand the functioning of the education system, it is essential to know about teacher training and the characteristics of the teachers who work in Bedouin schools.

  • Attitude of Post-Graduate Students towards Family Planning in Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State

    Family planning can be considered beneficial to an extent and it involves the use of contraceptives to stop unwanted pregnancies. Thus, this study investigated attitude of post-graduate students towards family planning in Ilorin metropolis, Kwara state. Descriptive research design of survey type was adopted for this study. The population for this study consisted of post graduates in Ilorin, Kwara state. The sample of two hundred were randomly selected. The sampling technique that was used in this study was purposive sampling technique. The instrument that was used for this study is a researcher-developed questionnaire tagged “Attitude of Post-graduate Students Towards Family Planning Question (APSTFPQ)". In analyzing the data collected for this study, both descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were employed. The demographic data collected was analyzed using percentages and ranking order. In testing the hypotheses generated, t-test and Analysis of variance (ANOVA) statistics were used to analyze the hypotheses generated for the study at 0.05 level of significance. The study revealed that the attitude of post graduate students towards family planning in Ilorin metropolis was positive. There was no significant difference in the attitude of post graduate students towards family planning based on age, course of study and number of children while significant difference was observed on level of educational attainment. Based on the findings of this study, it was recommended that awareness should be created among post graduate students about family planning to improve the attitude of the students towards family planning, Counsellors in tertiary institutions should organize seminars and workshops on family planning and its importance, post graduate students irrespective of age, course of study and number of children should make it as a habit to engage in family planning.

    The existing ethical leadership literature reflects a Western-based private sector perspective, implying a compliance-oriented view of ethical leadership. Developing a more comprehensive understanding of how ethical leadership is viewed in the Western and Eastern cultural clusters, as well as the private and public sectors, is crucial because today's leaders must lead ethically across cultures and sectors more and more. Addressing this issue, the present study explores how employees from Eastern cultures define ethical leadership and which characteristics they associate with ethical leaders. A qualitative study was conducted through interviews this study conducted 10 confidential individual interviews with leaders and employees in a public organization in Jordan. The findings indicate that while there may be similarities with Western perspectives on ethical leadership such as honesty; respect, fairness, and justice, there are also distinct characteristics and priorities that reflect the unique socio-cultural context of the region like religiosity, accountability, responsibility, and trustworthiness.

  • THE "INSTITUTIONALIZATION" OF THE LOVARI LANGUAGE FROM THE ASPECT OF SOCIAL INNOVATION

    In this current paper we intend to reflect upon the historicity and social impact of Lovari language education from the perspective of social innovation. Our starting point is that the process of the acceptance of the Lovari language and its recognition in the educational palette of foreign languages is a „bottom-up” initiative that developed mainly from the work of Romani intellectuals. The focus of our interest is, among others, the following questions: Who invented it? Who supported it? Who prevented it? What language learning methods are used by people teaching Lovari language who are originally not language teachers? The „institutionalization” of language education in Lovari and the state-recognized language exam certificate that can be obtained in this language have a serious social impact, for example, it helped disadvantaged and/or Roma students to obtain a university degree. From this point of view, we also consider this phenomenon as an innovation. Besides the secondary sources, we tend to map the topic with the help of primary, qualitative data. In addition to interviews with Lovari language teachers (N=3) who have been teaching for several decades, we would like to put our own perceptions in a narrative.

    The IQ-paradox: although the intellectual abilities are better and better of the new generations (it is the so-called Flynn-effect, the speed of intellectual growth is 3 IQ-point per decade), the average IQ stays 100 IQ-point in case of every generation. This article shows some factors in the background of IQ-paradox: concept, tests, and score-types of intelligence, and it demonstrates the absurd consequences of speed-rate of Flynn-effect. At last, this article gives an explanation of IQ-paradox.

  • MOTIVATIONS OF MENTOR CANDIDATES PARTICIPATING IN THE LET’S TEACH FOR HUNGARY MENTOR PROGRAM’S PREPARATION COURSE

    The present study focuses on the role of mentoring in education. The topic of mentoring has increasingly got into the focus of researchers in recent years (Bencsik és Juhász, 2017).In accordance with international practice, the role of mentors in Hungarian public education institutions has become more valuable. In proportion to recognizing its role in education, different mentoring programs have emerged in each type of school. In the present study, our orientation is specifically aimed at the students of the Teach for Hungary Mentoring Program in Debrecen, in order to map the aspects of the motivations of the student mentor candidates in Debrecen. Among other things, we are curious about their emotional and cognitive attitude toward mentoring, and we are interested in the extent (or lack thereof) of their commitment to mentoring. Our aim is to explore, what influences the final decision among students to become a mentor (material, mental resource, etc.) and how these factors interact/relate to each other. In the spring semester of the 2018/2019 academic year, we conducted our research with 151 young students who took part in a theoretical course to become a mentor. The foundation of our research is the questionnaire created by Ceglédi, Szűcs, Hüse, and Berényi (2019), and that form was filled in by a student who applied for a TMO1 course at the beginning of the 2019/20 academic year. Nearly 50% of respondents decided to commit themselves to mentoring, and the other 50% did not undertake mentoral activity for some reason.  Based on our results, it can be said that assistance and financial support in the form of scholarship were the main motivating factors for mentors, but the latter was important mainly for male students, nor had the financial aspect primary importance for students with a disadvantaged background in the development of motivation. According to our conclusions, commitment and strong internal motivations play an important role in mentoring, while financial benefits in the form of external motivation can be secondary, but also play an important role in motivation.

    Parents, teachers, and often even experts (including psychologists and therapists) are baffled by a mysterious communicative disorder, which is defined by relevant literature as “selective mutism.” Children living with this disorder refuse to speak to anyone (especially in kindergarten and in school), in spite of the fact that their vocal development is unharmed and they communicate with their parents and other family members normally at home. This disorder may not cause problems in kindergarten but all the more so in school. Pedagogues lack any tools for the special treatment of non-speaking children, in order to help them overcome their communicative barriers, and this raises several obstacles in the teaching process. In this paper, the reasons leading to selective mutism are discussed besides the question of whether, in cognizance of the background knowledge, supporting experts (including teachers) can if at all, cooperate successfully in bridging and resolving symptoms.

  • GIPSY CHILDREN AT THE DEBRECEN FOOTBALL ACADEMY–RESULTS OF A QUALITATIVE STUDY

    One of the aims of the present study is to briefly outline the issues related to gipsy and sportsmen in the literature, and to interpret the main challenges and potential barriers that arise in this context (Bailey, 2005; Sütő-Gabóda, 2013; Kovács, 2016; Faragó and Konczosné, 2017). We also aim to review the most important contexts related to the social background of athletes and, more narrowly, football academics as a possible option for breakout opportunities, based on the football academy system that has been operating in Hungary since 2001 (Rábai, 2021), and to examine specifically how the Debrecen Football Academy can help young people of gipsy origin to break out. The focus of our study is qualitative research, during which we interviewed the leaders of the Debrecen Football Academy in order to get answers to our questions about the gipsy children in the academy. During the interviews, the interviewees provide an overview of the recruitment, social background and typical career paths of gipsy children who have attended the academy so far, as well as a general discussion of their situation and opportunities. Based on our results, the children studying and developing at the football academies have a stable social background, and the Debrecen Football Academy also offers scholarship-like support opportunities that can help children from lower social status in the institution receive significant support. Academy leaders emphasized during the interviews that, although gipsy children often drop out of education, they have a number of successful careers behind them, suggesting that they too have every opportunity to break through the academy. Interviewees also said that they do their best to support gipsy children so that no one is disadvantaged because of economic or social deprivation.

  • FACTORS SUPPORTING HIGHER EDUCATION OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES IN THE LIGHT OF A RESEARCH

    Compared to other social groups, persons with disabilities are at higher risk of poverty. One of the reasons for this can be explained by the labour market situation of people with disabilities, as their employment is extremely low, their livelihood is primarily ensured by social benefits. One of the main guarantees of achieving an adequate standard of living is income from work. The higher qualifications the employee has, the higher the chance is to have a job that suits his/her interests and abilities. However, persons with disabilities tend to have lower educational qualifications than members of the majority of society, and their higher education is particularly low. In order to achieve equal opportunities, persons with disabilities may take advantage of allowances and subsidies in the course of their higher education as well as their studies. Using qualitative, semi-structured interviews, the research explores how services promoting equal opportunities at universities facilitate the higher education of students with disabilities, support their job search and their integration into the labour market. The research also comprised the examination of how the family background or previous (primary and secondary school) studies influenced the higher education of the interviewees. Based on the research results, it can be stated that promoting equal opportunities at universities contributes to the successful completion of studies as well as participation in the labour market eventually. The family, the parents, studying in an integrated framework play a crucial role in the decision of a student with disabilities to continue his/her studies at university.
