The princes of Transylvania would have gladly followed the example of Bocskai, who settled the hajdú soldiers, but they did not have significant land available for donation. Therefore, the hajdús who undertook princely service received various and different privileges. In 1653, the Transylvanian collection of laws included 20 hajdú settlements from Bihar. However, 40% of these do not have known privilege letters. Körösszeg was among these, despite being owned by the Csáky family throughout the century. György Rákóczi I considered the Catholic István Csáky an enemy of Transylvania. He took away his castle and estate, which he got back under the terms of the Agreement of Eperjes (1633), but both the castle and the hajdús living in the market town had to serve Varad, and only served as soldiers for the landowner during peacetime. The hajdús were under the jurisdiction of their lieutenant, who was accountable to the captain of Varad but was also supposed to work in agreement with the estate's court judge. The Transylvanian code of law intended to modify this peculiar dual service to a hajdú privilege, but the Csáky family contradicted this decision in 1654. In 1659, their court judge allowed only those who agreed to serve the lord to return to the market town and also put down the hajdú name. After the siege of Varad in 1660, the destroyed castle was not rebuilt, and the settlement remained deserted.

The story of Endre Csobán's trip to England is contained in three small-format pocketbooks, which are stored in The Hungarian National Archives Hajdú-Bihar County Archives. Csobán traveled to London to get acquainted with and learn the essential modern techniques of repairing diplomas in the National Archives of Britain, in the Public Record Office. The passage published here is from the first notebook. He recorded his journey starting from the preparations and the events that happened to him between 27 July 1929 and 16 August 1929 in a 16.5 x 10.5 cm, greenish-brown, cloth-bound, lined booklet. Endre Csobán's diaries are important contemporary documents that provide cultural history, political and literary additives. Moreover, they are also valuable from the point of view of researching and writing personal history, and generally, from the historical psychology side. The the finely toned image of the inner life of the writer unfolds from the entries which portray a man who is receptive about and responsive to the things of the world.

The development or stagnation, regression of market towns can be interesting not only from the point of view of urban development for history or social sciences, but can also largely determine/reflect the life and possibilities of a given region, thus, the market towns themselves are closely related to the history of the region around them. The aim of my study is to outline the process during which the trajectory of a region that had been developing for centuries and had several urban settlements and market towns was broken, and the demographic and urbanization processes that had been noticeable within the region until then regressed and withered away. At the end of the review, I would also like to find an answer to why this phenomenon occurred. In the first half of the article, I present the demographic development of the region. There was no major break in the population of the Hegyköz settlements until the first third/middle of the 17th century, its population was approx. 10,000. After this, by the end of the Turkish era, the number of people living here decreased considerably (1692: 6,000 people). Then, in the 18th century, the area inhabited almost exclusively by Hungarians was repopulated with the help of a significant number of Romanians and a smaller Slovak and Swabian population, and in 1787 the number of inhabitants was already 18,000 (Hungarians made up approx. 70%). In parallel with the demographic and ethnic development of the population, the religious affiliation of the people living there also largely changed. While almost only Roman Catholics lived in the region until the Turkish era, in the 17th century, as a result of the rapid spread of the Reformation, the majority of Hungarians became Reformed. The majority of the Romanians, who appeared in large numbers during the resettlement, represented an Orthodox but growing Greek Catholic population, while the Slovaks and Swabians were Roman Catholics. The industrialization and modernization that took place in the second half of the 19th century had a positive effect on the number of people living here, which already exceeded 30,000 by 1910. In the 20th century, however, there was first a further increase of less intensity (1941: 34,196 people), then a large-scale decrease in the population. As a result, according to the data of the 2002 census, the number of inhabitants does not even reach 25,000, which corresponds to the level of 1880. Meanwhile, by the beginning of the 21st century, the number of Hungarians decreased to approx. 60%, and that of Romanians to approx. 36%. 75% of Hungarians are Reformed, 25% are Roman Catholic, and Romanians – as a result of the banning of Greek Catholicism in 1948 – are almost entirely adherents of Orthodoxy. Based on the demographic and historical geographical changes of the region, we can see that the settlements of the ’Bihari Hegyköz’, which played a central role in certain stages of the period between the 10th and 17th centuries, Bihar (Biharia), Adorján (Adrian), Szentjobb (Sâniob), Szalárd (Sălard), as well as Hegyközcsatár (Cetariu) and Micske (Mișca), halted in their development during and after the Turkish conquest. And after that, even though they kept their viability thanks to resettlement in the 18th century, they completely lost their central roles during the modernization that began in the last third of the 19th century, the disintegration of historical Hungary and the changing systems ofthe 20th century. Nagyvárad (Oradea), located in the immediate vicinity of Bihari Hegyköz, became the central place of the region.

In my study, which has been written on the basis of books, archival sources and periodicals, you can read about Miklós Horthy’s visits to and his student years in Debrecen. During my research, Miklós Horthy’s childhood residence was discovered, which was located at today’s 8 Péterfia Street. He finished classes 3 and 4 as a fared student of the Debrecen College between 1876 and 1878 and then his father sent him to continue his studies in Sopron. He returned to the Civis city only as governor: first – as part of his country tour – on April 14, 1920, he visited the city “liberated” by the National Army. Next, on November 6, 1924, he travelled to Debrecen for the opening ceremony of the children’s clinic, then on October 17, 1926, to lay the foundation stone of the site for the medical college clinic, and to unveil the statue of István Tisza. The next date is June 3, 1927, when he arrived here for the laying of the foundation stone of the Tisza István University, and on the 10th of June, 1928, for the riding days organized by the Chamber of Agriculture of the Tiszántúl Region and for the inauguration of 80 soldiers. And lastly, on July 1, 1929, he came here to watch the 22nd National Song Contest. The contemporary press and the Telegraph Office only record the occasions described above as Miklós Horthy's official visits to Debrecen, but he might have returned to our town several times until October 15, 1944, as the governor also visited other villages and towns in Hajdú and Bihar counties. Finally, I present the Baltazár mansion in Bodaszőlő, which Miklós Horthy visited several times outside the officially registered days.

The documents presented in this article, which can be found among the documentation of the office of the deputy lieutenant of Bihar county, provide additives to a more thorough study of the 20th century story of the bath operating in Sóstó. These documents reveal – among others – that almost half a century after the legal regulation, the institution illegally used the term “spa”, and that food and drink prices competed with those of Aranybika Debrecen. And of course, they include important information as to the sanitary situation of the bath in the period.

The elaborations of the history of rural Jewry in general can be claimed to be clearly defined by the Holocaust. The property and partly legal retaliation of the pre-Soa period, followed by the return, resumption, and disappearance of the surviving Jewry from the rural society, is usually only briefly mentioned in the works written about it, as an aftertaste of the events of the emergency. In this study, I present these less researched resources of the disappearance of the Jews from Berettyóújfalu, comparing it with another Hajdú-Bihar county town, Hajdúnánás. At the end of the war, a small number of local Jews returned home deprived of their families. A few tried to restart their lives in Berettyóújfalu, but there were others who never returned to their birthplace. Some of them tried to reorganize their lives in the land of their ancestors, then called Palestine, later Israel. In my study, I am talking about the vicissitudes of those who stayed for a while in the hope of a new beginning, but later, having experienced the communist dictatorship, left.

In the 18th century, migration was continuous in Nyíregyháza. In addition to the organized settlers from the 1750s, spontaneous arrivals also increased the population, which continued to grow. At the same time, the difficulties of personal prosperity, the hindrance of free religious practice and the promises of new settlements contributed to emigration and onward migration, one of the destinations of which was Bihar County. In accordance with migration, the misinterpreted descriptions of the specialized literature occasionally lead to the drawing of inaccurate conclusions, but the lack of resources does not always allow the exploration of the causes of migration, the knowledge of its course, and the analysis of its consequences. In the 18th century history of Nyíregyháza, it is also an open question why so many people moved to Monospetri in 1794, how they fit in there, why they did not become as dominant in public life as the people from Békés who also came here, and also, who and when returned, and why they did so. An overview of the past of the two settlements by comparing the nomenclature allows interesting conclusions to be drawn, the proof of which, however, requires the discovery of new resources.

István Bölsei Buday, the former deputy of Bihar, joined Ferenc Rákóczi II immediately after the outbreak of Rákóczi’s War of Independence. The nearly 50-year-old man supported the future prince according to his best talent, and his wife, Erzsébet Melczer, also helped him in this. The research conducted in connection with Rákóczi’s War of Independence focuses more on questions of military, economic and social history. Micro-historical explorations have received more emphasis in recent decades, concentrating on groups and individuals who fell outside the scope of traditional research models. With the help of such an in depth analysis focusing on one person, we aim to bring the wife, mother, family member behind the soldier closer to the reader.

Reviewing the history of Hungarian parliamentary and national assembly election processes reveals numerous regional differences in the development of political life; different experiences shaped public affairs in cities and the countryside, which are less apparent at the macro level. This study aims to provide an overview of the Berettyóújfalu electoral district in Bihar County from the introduction of the popular representation system to the last election of the Horthy era, i.e., from 1848 to 1939. The main sources for this overview are the latest specialized literature, archival data, and contemporary press reports. This analysis describes the territorial changes of the electoral district, the evolution of the number of eligible voters, and the identity and party affiliations of the candidate representatives. These three aspects proved suitable for revealing patterns that also delineate new directions for research.

1613 is an important date both in the history of the Royal Hungary and of the Principality of Transylvania. In this year, the Turks put an end to the reckless and inordinate political career of Gábor Báthory, helping his former devotee, Gábor Bethlen, into the throne of Transylvania. With this, a long blooming started in the life of the Principality. The centre of Bihar county, the castle of Várad played an important strategical role already during the 15-Year War, Várad meant the gate to Transylvania. The Royal Hungary put efforts into getting the castle back – in vain – even after the death of Gábor Báthory. András Nagylucsei Dóczy received order for the turning over of Várad first as a royal commissioner, and then as the chief of the Castle of Szatmár. In my study, I present the relationship of the two castles in the closing days of the principality of Gábor Báthory based on the extensive correspondence of the chief of Szatmár.

The cholera epidemic of 1831 came to Hungary from Galicia that belonged to the Austrian Empire. The epidemic broke out in Debrecen on 24th July 1831, and claimed thelives of 7.4% of the city's population, or more precisely, 2152 people. The resources detailing the events of the Cholera epidemic in Debrecen can be read in the Hajdú-Bihar County Archives of the Hungarian National Archives. This study presents the report of József Zsebők that shows in more detail the local event from the outburst of the epidemic to the release of the quarantine in October. The highly detailed report by Ádám Reviczky, General Chancellor, presented on 9th December 1831, nicely reflects what the contemporary medicine thought about the cholera disease and how they tried to cure it. This resource is essential not only from a point of view of local history, but also from a medical historical point of view, as – besides exploring the characteristics of the disease – it provides an authentic picture of the medical conditions, medical treatments, and even of the medicines of the time. In the bibliography, modern transcription was used, preserving the characteristic features of language or dialect.

In 1993, Pope John Paul II in his decree starting with Hungarorum gens regularized the borders of the Hungarian Roman Catholic dioceses, and established the Debrecen-Nyíregyháza Episcopate including Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg and Hajdú-Bihar counties as a new diocese (besides that of Kaposvar). The memorandum of association of the Diocesan Archives was signed by Nándor Bosák diocesan on 30th December 1995. The collection including the archives and library was formed to save the book and document materials of the priestless parishes of the diocese (and the filias belonging to them). The registration as public private archives took place in 1997. Since the autumn of 2001, it operates with regular opening hours. The section-level settlement of the documents of the 38 handled parishes was completed in 2013, its fondlist was finished by the spring of 2014. In 2015, the institution moved to a separate building at 17 Varga str. Researchers are also offered an expanding themed, singificantly increasing amount of manual library to choose from. Its first publication: Katolikusok Debrecenben (Catholics in Debrecen) 1715-2015 was released in 2015.

After the outbreak of the War of Independence, hallmarked by the name of Ferenc Rákóczi II, István Buday (bölsei), who served as the deputy granger of Bihar county between 1688 and 1701, was among the first rebels. In the Tokaj vineyard, he came to the neighbourhood of both Rákóczi and Miklós Bercsényi, establishing the base that provided a loyal and soldier for the revolution. István Buday climbed the ladder quickly: he became court captain, then chief of the Hajdú towns of Szabolcs, and later commander of the regiment of the Hajdú towns. The depths and heights that characterize the war of independence can also be traced in the military career of the former deputy granger. We can examine these in the framework of the present study. István Buday, who served in the War of Independence until his death, was the appropriate type of soldier of the time: he was an underqualified but experienced fortress warrior, participating in raids and smaller campaigns. This paper focuses on the eight years of the War of Independence, with special attention payed to the military career of the captain of the Hajdú towns.

The City Museum of Hajdúböszörmény was opened in 1924, which was a long-awaited event in the city’s cultural life. In 1949, the Museum was declared a public collection and became a scientific institute with full-fledged rights. In 1951, it picked up the Hajdúsági Museum name, and at that time, its first permanent exhibition was opened, which was followed by new ones on the expansion of the museum’s materials. The Museum took its place in the former Hajdú District Hall (which is a historical memorial since 1st January, 2012). As the largest regional museum of Hajdú-Bihar county, its primary task is to collect, preserve and process the material and spiritual values of the six „old” Haiduk towns (Hajdúböszörmény, Hajdúszoboszló, Hajdúnánás, Hajdúdorog, Hajdúhadház and Vámospércs) and to present those to the wider public. In addition, it performs a wide range museum education work, and takes part in the most important events of the museum profession, supported by civil associations and volunteers.
