Zsigmond Kemény wrote his pamphlet Forradalom után („After the Revolution”) a year after the Hungarian Revolution of 1848-1849. In his work he analyses the years of the Revolution and the political events of the 25 years preceding it. According to his perspective, the Revolution had led to a national catastrophe that may render the future of the Hungarian nation as uncertain. The aim of this essay is to investigate the means by which Kemény seeks to re-interpret the political events and leaders of the time between 1825 and 1849 in order to restore the Hungarians’ historical continuity, broken by the Revolution. In the analysis I shall examine the semantic layers of the notion ‘revolution’ used in the pamphlet, Kemény’s collective views of the future and his opinion of Lajos Kossuth.

The paper of Nyilasy deals with Kemény Zsigmond’s essay Ideas on the Novel and the Drama. The author holds the great Hungarian literary man’s essay in high esteem. He finds the Ideas... most remarkable from the standpoint of new cognitive poetics, and outstanding in comparison with the most famous modern essays on cultural philosophy and theory regarding the novel, written by György Lukács, José Ortega Y Gasset, Jürgen Habermas, Michael McKeon. The scholar specifically esteems the main idea of the essay. He analyses Zsigmond Kemény’s endeavour to understand the essence of the novel through the cultural conditions of modernity considering the expectations of the secularized, open-minded citizen-reader; furthermore, how the 19th century literary man anticipates modern approaches of the reception theory and reader-response criticism. It is widely known that outstanding authors of modern novel-theories (Lukács, Ortega and others) treat novel as a genre which expresses uncertainty and the lack of perspective, which so often characterise the twentieth century mind. Zsigmond Kemény considering the main characteristics of the novel also puts centre relativism; uncertainty, yet in comparison with György Lukács, Kemény represents a more moderate, cautious and careful standpoint. In the Ideas about the Novel and the Drama, the appraisal of reflective mind, openness and pluralism show strong presence; however, ‘pantragism’, peculiar characteristic of Lukács’s theory, remains unnoticeable.

Between 22 August and 19 December 1822 the weekly Budapesti Visszhang published a narrative entitled Remembrances in 13 installments. In 1853, Phantom Visions on the Soul’s Horizon by the same author, Zsigmond Kemény appeared as a full-length book. Are these two versions of the same work of fiction, or should they be read as different works? The earlier text has both thematic and structural closure. Although there is some continuity between the two texts, Phantom Visions is an elaboration on Remembrances. The focus is shifted to the consciousness of the characters, and an emphasis is put on the international background: a glance backward reveals the past of the hero’s father-in-law, detailing his role in the French revolution of 1789, his disillusionment at the way it developed, and his escape from his country. The new elements, including the portrayal of the tension between Hungarians and Romanians, make Phantom Visions a far more complex work than its predecessor.

The essay reads Zsigmond Kemény’s Ködképek a kedély láthatárán through theoretical insights provided by psychoanalysis, gender studies and deconstruction. The first part of the text is devoted to an analysis of narrative roles from the perspective of political power; observing how the friendship of Várhelyi and Cecil - the protagonists of the story -, seems to escape such power structures; at the same time, it represents the woman as an enigma and metaphorizes her soul as a fragment. The second part of the essay rereads Cecil’s tale of Ameline with the use of conventions and textual constructions found in (female) gothic genre concluding with some thoughts about how these two seemingly diverging sets of questions are intimately related to each other.

Short stories and novels written by Zsigmond Kemény in the 1850’s are usually known as female readings, intended mainly for women. These stories are often studied focusing on female characters or on the author’s biography (and the role that a woman played in it). The present study is on female readings: examining two examples of how women read and interpreted novels and how they could express their opinions. Firstly, it studies a critique by Pál Gyulai (1854), who has a debate with a countess in his writing. The question under debate is how a female character can be interpreted. After explaining this critique, the second example is a monography from 1903, written by one of the first Hungarian literary women, Irma Langheim. In her book, Langheim studies the female characters of Zsigmond Kemény, and she finds them full of life. These examined that female interpretations seemed to be important steps of literary history as history of readings.

In this paper I shall examine a correlation between narrative structure and ethics in novels and short stories of Zsigmond Kemény by reading narratives and reflecting on ethical concepts. In many of his novels written during the first half of 1850s, ethical questions became the guiding questions of the interpretation. Zsigmond Kemény established the new ethical importance of narrative by telling conventional stories in a new way. Ködképek a kedély láthatárán, Férj és nő, Alhikmet, a vén törpe - these texts provide ethical instructions regarding the reader’s participation in the making of modern identity. This participation essentially involves ethical considerations: his works from this age tend to reflect the affinity between fictional structure and moral aims and influences.

The oeuvre of Zsigmond Kemény is confronted with several dilemmas of genre theory and practice when talking about the emergence of mixed genres, the growing “trend” of the novel, the artistic transmutation of aesthetically valued prose, and the changing tendencies of performing arts that reflect back upon stage writing which subvert the traditional hierarchy of genres. He recognizes that the precision of the novel can bear artistic values that create a possibility to preserve genre patterns and transfer certain genre functions. He makes it a writer’s program – using Kemény’s terminus technicus – to create the “dramatically structured novel”, setting out to rescue the aesthetic values of a deteriorating genre/form, while he is trying to create/stabilize a place in high poetry for a rising genre/form. At the same time, he is also undertaking an act of reception aesthetics and reading sociology by leading the receiver with a preference for reading novels who is becoming affected by the influences of performing arts back to reading drama. In the rich and continuous Kemény reception, the essay is targeting a not uncommon field. The new aspects of the text will examine two novels of Kemény (Pál Gyulai; The Widow and Her Daughter) and some critical works that were written between them (which is rather a long decade in the writer’s activity: 1845-1857) as the accomplished practice of the writer’s genre experiments.

It’s been a quarter of a century since the rereading of Zsigmond Kemény’s oeuvre began. By now, the reception of Kemény is open to modern trends and has become a decisive tradition in the history of reception. Following this tradition, I prepared my talk for the bicentennial conference discussing Kemény’s novel The Widow and Her Daughter. My approach uses a reading open to romantic form principle; however, it is also a deviation from it with special regards to the schemes of intertextuality, composition, language and self-reflection while paying special attention to the act of reception and meaning attribution. In my essay I scrutinize letters shaping the texture of the novel. The special focus on the letters obviously emphasizes certain tendencies of interpretation. In my analysis I follow an approach of interpreting insertions into the main body text as structural inserts, while attributing decisive role to letter inserts in the narrative structure of Kemény’s novels. I attempt to analyze letters inserted into The Widow and Her Daughter from a textological and typological point of view, paying special attention to the dynamic aspect in the organization of the novel’s plot. The genre itself offers great opportunity to focus on the matter of fact concreteness of letter; which, as a consequence, can function – as we shall see – a rather mere intradiegetic narrative structure; furthermore, as an organizing principle of the plot through repetition, copying, violation of the sanctity of mail, the attachment etc.

The essay focuses on the psychological processes staged in Zsigmond Kemény’s The Widow and the Daughter: on the one hand, the personality changing aspects of the archetypal framework, on the other hand, the psychological representation of the mother-daughter relationship. The events that take place in the novel can be integrated into a more or less seamless psychological narrative. The archetype materialized in one of the protagonists of the novel, Madame Tarnóczi, overlaps with the psychological phenomenon that Shinoda Bolen called the Hera-archetype. The loss of balance in her marriage leads to serious mental problems: Madame Tarnóczi’s emotional-mental state of being offended and resentful becomes permanent, and that results in the suspension of her maternal instincts. Her thirst for revenge – due to her archetypical compulsion – is transferred to her daughter, who commits suicide to escape the unbearable psychological pressure. The representation of the deformed mother-daughter relationship seems exemplary in the novel, and in this respect the novel appears more responsive than it used to be in its own age.
