    In Hungary, preterm birth is a common issue; approximately 8.000 infants are born preterm each year. At the Department of Pediatrics of the University of Debrecen, our Pediatric Psychology and Psychosomatic Unit work to minimize the risk of neurodevelopmental delay in children born prematurely or in other risk groups. In favour of it, we help families at both the prevention and the intervention levels. Parent education, organization of parent groups, and counselling provide us an opportunity to acquaint parents with the possibilities of using help. The chapter briefly describes the possibilities of prevention (screening tests, diagnostics) and intervention (parent group, music therapy, animal-assisted therapy, sensory integration therapy), the family implications of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Bayley-III diagnostic and screening test, which is one of the most advanced developmental tools for early prevention. Our approach is that, in favour of healthy and balanced development, the whole family needs to get the appropriate support and care. Supporting and strengthening parental efficiency is an important step by which the parent is able to implement a method of education that takes into account the individual characteristics of the child, by which the child's adaptability, carrying capacity, and social skills develop and strengthen.

     

  • The Role of Parental Support Groups in Promoting Mental Health within Conductive Education

    In our study, we present one of the works from the Research Workshop on Social Integration and Employment Support at the Pető András Faculty of Semmelweis University, Budapest. This work examines conductive education and the collaboration with families, summarizing the broad activities and crucial role of mental health parent groups. Our research continues an earlier previous study (Kapcsándy, et al., 2024) aimed at evaluating the mental health parent groups operating within the Faculty. For two decades now, group sessions have been held here, led by conductors with knowledge in psychology and mental health, offering support to parents in coping with crises, ensuring they do not feel isolated in their struggles. In our study, we conducted semi-structured interviews with parents, specifically mothers (n=13), who have participated in these support groups over the past 15-20 years. Our aim is to summarize the insights gained from these conversations and, based on the findings, offer recommendations to both conductor training and practice regarding mental health support. The interviews were coded using the MAXQDA software. We explored which areas of family life were supported by the parent groups led by psychologists and conductors and how participants perceived the group’s supportive nature. An important message for the Faculty is that all parents had a positive experience with the sessions, highlighting the demand for a systematic provision of mental health support for families. During the interviews, we observed that these sessions had a significant impact on the mothers’ later lives, with several choosing a helping profession as a result of the group’s influence. We also encountered cases where the children of mothers attending the groups chose to study in supportive fields (e.g., psychology, therapeutic riding instructor, and teacher).

  • SIBLING CARE - SIBLINGS CARING FOR ADULTS WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES

    The increasing life expectancy of adults with intellectual disabilities has raised new questions and challenges for families. Depending on the severity of their condition, people with intellectual disabilities need support from their families and environment to vary degrees throughout their lives. They depend on their family members, which addiction is a new problem as parents get older, and care will be the responsibility of siblings who are already living independent lives, sometimes geographically far away. Sibling care should be interpreted differently than when it is performed by a parent or a paid carer, it is more emotionally complex, its content and direction are diverse. We know not too much about sibling caregivers, we only have hypothetical answers to the questions based on a small number of studies or research in similar areas. This paper aims to provide an overview of the situation and motivations of adults who care of and take responsibility for their siblings with intellectual disabilities, and of their role and interaction of the various influences that help them understand. Getting to know siblings is necessary in order for the support system of the special education and social policy to adapt properly to the situation of the  - unfortunately - barely ‘visible’ population.

  • Parental Involvement in the Schooling of Children with Special Educational Needs

    This study explores the association between special educational needs (SEN) and the level, mode, and intensity of parental involvement in Hungarian schools. Anchored in the principles of child-centered education and inclusive collaboration, the research investigates whether families of SEN students engage differently compared to their non-SEN counterparts, particularly when additional socio-economic disadvantages are present. A literature review revealed limited comparative analysis between SEN and non-SEN groups, prompting a focus on existing studies that examine parent-school relationships, primarily from the adult perspective. The empirical component utilizes a secondary analysis of the National Assessment of Basic Competences (NABC) database, drawing on longitudinal student-level data from the 2015 (Grade 6), 2017 (Grade 8), and 2019 (Grade 10) cohorts. A refined dataset tracks students on an uninterrupted educational path, allowing analysis of parental involvement indicators derived from five items in the background questionnaire. Findings suggest that while parental involvement generally declines over time, the decline is steeper among students with multiple disadvantages than those with SEN alone. Support with homework stands out as the most sustained form of involvement, although it remains limited for families with lower educational capital. Contrary to assumptions, SEN students receive substantial parental attention through secondary school, highlighting the potential for constructive alliances between teachers and families. However, PTA meeting attendance is markedly lower among parents of disadvantaged learners. The data also emphasize that students classified as both SEN and socioeconomically disadvantaged (LOW SES) exhibit the highest dropout risk, stressing the need for targeted interventions.

    The spread of international companies in Hungary and the employment of Hungarian workers abroad have made it possible for foreign practices to increasingly appear in every field of the organizations’ functions. As organizations face continuous challenges all over the world, the range of solutions developed and used to tackle these challenges broadens continually. This paper describes the practice of a Hungarian subsidiary owned by a German parent company towards people with disabilities and those whose work capacity has changed. These activities are in connection with Human Resources, Communication, and more generally the organization’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). In the paper, the specific practice of the company, focusing on the complexity of new issues is described.

  • Parenting Styles as Predictor of Adolescents’ Delinquent Behaviours

    Adolescence is a period attributed with series of changes, and sometimes, adolescents engage in deviant behaviour and violate societal norms. The impacts of these delinquent acts are deleterious and needed to be curbed. This study examined parenting styles as predictor of adolescents' delinquent behaviours. Married adults in Kwara State, Nigeria comprised the population of this study  (n=300) and sample was chosen using simple random sampling technique from Kwara South Senatorial Districts. Questionnaire designed by the authors was used to collect data from the respondents. Mean and rank order analysis was used to answer the research questions. The hypothesis was tested using multiple regression at 0.05 level of significance. The finding revealed that authoritarian and authoritative parenting styles were common among married adults. It was shown that permissive and uninvolved parenting styles were the predictors of adolescents’ delinquent behaviours. It was recommended that parent should endeavour to create adequate time to interact with adolescent, sten to their worries, provide unambiguous responses to their queries and relate friendly with them. Counsellors should be adequately prepared to address the cases of youthful exuberance.

    In this study, we compare institutional and foster care. The method chosen is a secondary analysis of statistical data. In the study, we seek to answer the question of how the number of places, the number of children, the age composition of children, the duration of placement and the type of placement vary in Hungary and in the Northern Great Plain region.  We analyse data for the years 2014, 2021 and 2023 in terms of deinstitutionalisation and present the current situation of child protection care alongside the trends in institutional restructuring in recent years. A further aim of our comparative analysis is to review the number of cases of runaways from care in recent years, assuming that they occur less frequently in foster care. For the analysis, we have primarily used data for the years 2014, 2021 and 2023. In some places, the year 2020 was analysed due to data availability.  We have used publicly available data series from the KSH, as well as data recorded on the basis of individual data requests according to the KSH OSAP Form 1208, which contains data provided by child protection centres based in the respective counties.
