The subgenus Ceratochloa (DC. et P. Beauv.) Hack. (Bromus L., Poaceae) in Hungary
44-47Views:433The subgenus Ceratochloa is a taxonomically difficult small group of the genus Bromus. The species of this subgenus are mostly native to America, and are often introduced to other continents. Two species of them, namely B. catharticus and B. carinatus have been reported from Hungary so far. Bromus catharticus was first found in Győr city in the 1910s, much later (in the 2000s) in Környe and Kálmánháza villages. The Hungarian records of B. carinatus come from Keszthely and Sopron cities. We have recently found two new occurrences of B. catharticus in the city of Pécs, South Hungary.

The occurences of two ‘old-new’ alien grass species, Rostraria cristata (L.) Tzvelev and Cynosurus echinatus L. in Pécs
39-42Views:226Some small populations of Rostraria cristata and Cynosurus echinatus, two ‘old-new’ alien grass species in Hungary, were recently discovered in the city of Pécs (South Hungary). A morphological description of these species as well as a survey of their former and current localities are presented.

Occurrences of sea lyme grass (Leymus arenarius) in the Kiskunság, Hungary
106-108Views:416We present six new occurrences of a rare non-native species, the sea lyme grass (Leymus arenarius (L.) Hochst.) in the Kiskunság region, Hungary. The populations grow in disturbed, secondary habitats (e.g., abandoned fields, recultivated landfills, surroundings of farms), but one of them begins to expand on the adjacent natural open sandy grassland. Most of the occurrences occupy several hundred square meters and in some cases it forms almost monodominant stands. We suppose that the species has the potential to become an invasive species in this inland sand region.

Vulpia bromoides and Luzula multiflora in the Dráva Plain (S Hungary)
234-235Views:1966Vital populations of Vulpia bromoides (L.) S. F. Gray and Luzula multiflora Kirsch. were found between Vajszló and Páprád villages (S Hungary) in 25 May 2022. The populations grew in a mesic forest clearing in the territory of “Bükkhát forest”. These species are new for the flora of the Drava Plain. The habitat is demonstrated by a phytosociological relevé.

Data on alien vascular plant species in Hungary I. (1–6)
65–80Views:1034This is the first in a series of papers by various authors presenting previously unpublished data relevant to the knowledge of alien vascular plants in Hungary. This paper deals with the families Pteridaceae, Brassicaceae, Plantaginaceae, Rosaceae, Ranunculaceae, Fabaceae and Poaceae. It includes new area records and distributional considerations for Cochlearia danica and Plantago coronopus spreading along Hungarian road-network as well as records of Panicum riparium from the Northern Hungarian Mountain range based on field work and herbarium revision. We note the importance of checking the data previously collected as P. capillare. Floristic data of two species not previously recorded in Hungary (Cardamine corymbosa, Ranunculus marginatus) and 3 sporadically occurring alien species (Aphanes australis, Lepidium didymum, Medicago arabica), from garden centres in the Debrecen area were published. A 7-year long survival of a population of Adiantum capillus-veneris in a traditional, abandoned well is also documented between 2017 and 2024. The paper reports that traffic infrastructure can facilitate the spread of Elymus elongatus along roads.

The historical occurrence of Digitaria ciliaris in Hungary – results of a herbarium survey
53–62Views:463Revision of genus Digitaria in BP Herbarium Carpato-Pannonicum collection helped to discover the historical occurrence of Digitaria ciliaris (Retz.) Koeler from Győr, in the area of an old cotton and wool processing and textile factory. However, it has been proved that the previously published Hungarian records of the species are all wrong, as the Digitaria-keys of Hungarian herbals misinterpreted the taxon, mainly as a synonym of D. sanguinalis subsp. pectiniformis. The herbarium survey confirmed that D. sanguinalis is the most common taxon in Hungary. D. sanguinalis subsp. pectiniformis is also widespread, but probably somewhat under-mapped. Probably not native to Hungary, most probably an archeophyte taxon. Specimens have been collected from disturbed habitats associated to railways and from xerothermic vineyard areas for over a hundred years. D. ischaemum is certainly native to the region, with a recognisable natural distribution pattern, and is found mainly in the sandy and gravelly soils of the lowland and hilly areas of the country. This species has recently become more common in urban areas across the country with the recent spread of sand-lined pavements. D. ciliaris of tropical/subtropical origin is a casual alien species that was formerly present in the Hungarian flora.

A new alien species to the Hungarian flora: Polypogon viridis (Gouan) Breistr.
165–172Views:352Polypogon viridis (Gouan) Bresitr., a new alien species to the Hungarian flora, was detected between the years 2016–2019. Water bent (P. viridis), originating from the Mediterranean basin, was recorded from several plant nurseries and outdoor flowerpots in Transdanubia, Hungary. The new Hungarian records fit into the observed phenomenon that ornamental plant trade is an important factor in the spread of this species. Morphological characterization and insertion of P. viridis into the Hungarian identification key are also provided in this paper. Since P. viridis was represented in large numbers at some of the Hungarian localities, future monitoring of its spread may be important to evaluate the invasiveness of the species in the country.
