A cikk a politikai vezetés gazdasági növekedésben játszott szerepét foglalja össze, s áttekinti azokat az irodalmakat, amelyekben a vezető és maga a vezetés (leadership) válik hangsúlyossá a gazdasági teljesítmény egyik lehetséges magyarázataként. Az írás az intézményi közgazdaságtan főáramából indul ki, amely egyelőre mostohán kezeli az egyén szerepét, s leginkább az intézményrendszer fontosságára fókuszál. Az intézményi felfogással szembeni kritikák magva leginkább az, hogy az általuk használt mutatók endogének és a politikai kimenetre összpontosítanak. Hatékony gazdaságpolitikát viszont a vezetők is létrehozhatnak, ezért válhat fontossá, hogy magyarázó tényezőként bevonjuk őket az empirikus elemzésekbe.
