    Another choice after finishing secondary school: university or work? Does the decision taken earlier - on the choice of secondary school - affect the decision to be taken four years later? Behind every (further education) decision there are manifest and latent variables. The target population of our research is the senior students in Harghita County. We use a multistage group sampling. In the first stage, all the Hungarian-language theoretical high schools (lyceums) in the Szekler county (Harghita) were included in the sampling frame, and pairs of vocational high schools were matched. We were interested to find out which factors and arguments induce students' decisions for or against further education. The family background effect is also present in students' post-secondary school decisions, since there is little discrepancy between investment risk and probability of success for children of higher-status parents, and the same applies to the gap between aspirations and actual achievement.

    The study examines the question of what factors shape attitudes towards education in Szeklerland (Romania) and what role the rural character of the rural Hungarian regional society plays in shaping attitudes towards school and learning. Due to the specific situation of Szeklerland, four factors frame Hungarian education in the region: the official state institutional system, the minority situation, the regional identity-building process and the way the regional rural society functions. The study summarises the research results of WAC - Center for Regional and Anthropological Research in Miercurea-Ciuc and discusses the ways in which the lifestyle, values and norms of local or micro-regional communities frame the everyday attitude of families and parents towards education. The authors emphasise that the relationship between education and local or micro-communities, which has developed over the past decades and is still relevant today, is characterised by a parallelism in which both distance and interconnectedness are constantly present.

    The study is based on a questionnaire survey carried out in 2017-2018. It analyses the attitudes of school leaders in Szeklerland (n=238) based on two main aspects in the topics that determine the everyday school work and leadership: (1) the relationship between school and local society and (2) the social context. The importance of this topic is indicated by the changes in the role of schools, teachers and school leaders in the 21st century, which have created different challenges for rural schools and areas compared to urban ones, and which can be addressed in new ways. These new processes require a change of approach in school management, which is not only a matter of school management and education, but also of rural development. The aim of the study is to draw attention to the relevance of this process by referring to the literature and by analysing the attitudes of school leaders in Szeklerland.

    In our study we analyse a specific aspect of the mass presence of Roma pupils in schools: the context in which the social environment of Szeklerland creates the context for the schooling of Roma pupils. After outlining the characteristics of the regional social context, we present some classroom situations which for teachers bear the challenges of confronting the cultural difference of pupils. The research method is interviews with teachers in Roma-majority classrooms. Our research shows that a significant part of the work of teachers in Roma-majority classrooms is not about teaching, but about managing cultural difference. In the context of the specific social conditions of the Szekler region, in addition to the social approach (extreme poverty) and the search for methodological solutions in the education of Roma children, it is also useful to pay attention to the social relations as a frame of the educational process.

  • A review of civil society organizations concepts through content analysis

    Day by day, civil society organizations (CSOs) are becoming an increasingly important factor in all areas of the socio-economic system. The interest in their study has also increased, although the place, role, and definition of their terminology and concepts, needs to be further clarified, as their meaning changes conditionally. Through content analysis, this article reviews the literature by addressing a sample of 136 journal articles published in the period 2015-2019 in two big databases. The findings show that CSOs literature is dominated by qualitative works of social sciences authors who mostly use the term Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). This paper is also elaborated on the main themes which dominate the text of the articles. Furthermore, the main concepts of this literature, development, organizations, international, local and other words are analyzed here. The significance of this study is that it aims to provide CSOs researchers with a clearer description of the terminology and concepts the most commonly used.

    This study presents the results of mapping health status, health behavior and nutritional habits onto a group of aging adults. The data was collected in 2021 using a questionnaire with 684 individuals at the age and over the age of 50. Results indicate that one third of the respondents suffer from some chronic disease and that one out of four is overweight. The health awareness of the group was good. Health literacy showed a significant correlation with education, gender, subjective health, and the presence of a chronic disease.

    The modern society of the 21st century has to cope with many psychosomatic disorders which have high significance in public health. Several researches pointed out that one of the most determinant aspects in connection with asthma bronchiale is the mother-child relation. The aim of this study was to detect what is the predisposing role of early childhood attachment factors. 130 children with asthma bronchiale between the age of 10 to 18 and their mothers were involved. A socio-demographic questionnaire (to detect the early experiences), the Multidimensional Anxiety Scale (for the children) and the Beck Anxiety Inventory (for the parents) were used. Our most important finding is that out of important life events in connection with childhood attachment (especially the breastfeeding and its length) was proven to be a protective factor. Establishing preventive opportunities at institutions are recommended, e.g. setting up educative and preventive groups for chronically ill children and their parents. Attachment in early childhood must be considered to be even more important in the case of chronically ill patients.

    The relationship between well-being and adaptive-convergent and exaptive-divergent thinking during the coronavirus pandemic: In our paper we investigate whether there is a relationship between well-being and adaptive-convergent and exaptive-divergent thinking. In other words, the central question of our paper is to what extent different coping strategies, borrowed from evolutionary biology, influence the level of subjective well-being during the coronavirus pandemic. For the empirical examination of our question, we used a data collection of 1,000 people, representing the Hungarian population over 18 years of age. To examine the relationships between the factors under investigation, we built four regression models. Our results show that well-being is enhanced by both adaptive-convergent (logical, systematic) and exaptive-divergent (creative, innovative) thinking. This relationship is valid even when the effects of the coronavirus epidemic on well-being are excluded, and divergent thinking also helps to make people less affected by the pandemic.

    In the Hungarian higher education, innovative pedagogical methods are needed to prepare students for the challenges of employment. Storytelling offers a multi-faceted, learner-centred method. This paper aims to investigate which skills storytelling improves, and whether it can be used in the Hungarian higher education. Three semi-structured interviews were conducted and thematically analysed. Based on these results, two pedagogical experiments were conducted, observed, and analysed. Results include that storytelling can be realized in many ways, and the method can contribute to the improvement of skills which are currently needed in the labour market.

    The use of ICT is widespread among social workers, many of them use digital technology and social media, keep in touch with their clients online and there are more and more people consulting online. There are also automated treatments that do not require the contribution of the social worker, robots have already appeared abroad in elderly care, use algorithms to prevent child abuse and suicide, and virtual reality in the treatment of addicts. How does all this affect social work as a profession, what professional and ethical issues does the use of technology raise? What kind of new skills do social workers need and how should they reinterpret their roles in the 21st century? In my study, I sought answers to these questions.

    Many organic, dense neighbourhoods – judged as unhealthy and socially problematic – disappeared in the second half of the 20th century globally, to be replaced by modern prefabricated housing estates. It is difficult to judge objectively from the distance of several decades, whether these drastic transformations of the urban tissue brought the positive changes hoped for at the time of their construction, or not. The article addresses this question on a case study, using the quantitative methods of space syntax combined with on-site observations and the analysis of contemporary newspapers.
