The state considered the joint solution of the social and health needs of the population to be the task of the public administration. The public health institutions included the health centre, the purpose of which was to provide assistance and advice on health issues available in one place. The majority of municipalities did not have sufficient financial means to implement the necessary measures, so they needed support from the state and organizations. The health centres and the health protection work of the Green Cross were closely connected, and their activities contributed to the eradication of the social and health deficiencies of Transcarpathia.

ombating epidemic is a key health policy objective in all countries. The purpose of patient transportation is to ensure access to healthcare in cases where this cannot be achieved by any other means. This is especially true in the case of infectious diseases. This activity was carried out by the disinfection and transport station for infectious disease patients that had been set up in Uzhhorod during the Second World War. In terms of the development of health infrastructure, it was filling gaps in the lagging part of the country.

In 1938–1939, according to the First Vienna Award, the Southern Hungarian-inhabited
strip of Transcarpathia returned to the rule of Hungary. This event brought significant
changes in the organization of the life of associations. Folk culture education in Transcarpathia, which came under Hungarian rule, halted for a long time. There came a general
silence in the previously very lively association life; the members of some organizations
took on a waiting position, while the leadership of others got disintegrated. Contrary to
Czechoslovak politics, Hungarians clearly decided to support the Ruthenophilic (Ruthenian) language trend, thus many Russian and Ukrainian party associations representing
goals opposing the Hungarian state ideology were liquidated or disbanded. Later, a number of associations advocating and supporting the Hungarian and Ruthenian nationalities
    took their place.

In this study, I would like to describe the activities of disinfection health guards and delousing patrols. The research was based on documents kept in the Beregszász Department of the Regional State Archives of the Transcarpathian Oblast, and on the collections of the Hungarian National Archives and the National Széchényi Library. The disinfectant health guards performed a preventive, monitoring, control and executive service in public health, epidemiological, trade fair and market policing matters referred to the authority of the district. Delousing patrols often performed their duties in the affected settlements, and continued to be active – during the epidemic-free period – for prevention purposes. Despite the disinfectant work done under difficult conditions, the expected results were achieved, as shown by the reduction in the number of infections.

Caring for the blind has always been an important part of the life of a society. This task was also performed by the Podkarpatská Ruszi (later Transcarpathian) Association for the Protection of the Blind. At the Munkács Institute for the Blind, operating under its wings, in grades 1-4, blind children were educated and those over 15 who had fallen out of state care were patronized. However, the association considered it important to support and provide occasional assistance to the disabled, the sick, the elderly and their family members. Under the patronage of the association, the Munkács Institute for the Blind grew into a nationally renowned girls' institute by 1941, and continued to operate uninterrupted until the fall of the Soviet troops occupying Transcarpathia in the autumn of 1944.

From the 1920s-1930s, studies aiming to get acquainted with the biting mosquito fauna in Hungary were intensified. The endemic incidence of malaria particularly affected the Southwestern and Northeastern parts of the country. Because of this, several malariastations were set up during the Second World War, in the Transcarpathian area: in the city of Uzhhorod (Ungvár) and Beregszász. The Uzhhorod Station started its activities in February 1940. Their duties included the education of the public, the development and application of defense methods of the time, and the medical treatment of patients. In order to achieve the natural mosquito clearance, Gambusia affinis fish were installed in the deeper brickyard pits. Due to their insecticidal effect, methyl green and naphtha derivatives were used as chemical agents. In the more affected settlements, terrain and water management works were carried out after mapping the terrain, which affected swampy and riverbed areas. The stations contributed to eradicating the problem, but it was possible to suppress the endemic presence of malaria only by the early 1950s.
