  • THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MENTAL HEALTH AND LEISURE SPORT

    Thanks to today’s accelerated world, the number of mental illnesses has multiplied, and chronic stress, lack of self-confidence, depression are all present in people’s everyday lives. Just as physical activity is essential for the existence of physical health, so physical activity is essential for maintaining and improving mental health. The research examines the mental health and sports habits of the next generation. Focusing on stress management ability, the importance of stress relief. Examining the answers obtained, we primarily compare the sports habits of the examined persons with the mental factors in order to explore the connections. During the research, as a primary procedure, we conducted a questionnaire survey, in the framework of which we analyzed the responses of 331 people. 72.3% of young people living in Debrecen chose grade 3-4 (on a scale of 4) when asked about their degree of stress management skills. In the same survey, 52.5% of young adults who do not engage in sports feel that they have good or near-good stress management skills. A 19.8% higher proportion of athletes responded from their experience that they have good stress management skills than individuals who do not engage in sports or rarely do so. Respondents consider helping concentration (rated 5.8 on a scale of 7) and stress relief (5.8) to be the most important positive effects of sport. Respondents, regardless of which category they belong to in terms of sports habits, consider stress relief as a factor affecting mental health in sport. 85% of athletes and 80.7% of non-athletes consider the stress-relieving effect of sport to be important, so the result presents only a 4.3% difference, which is negligible. Yet this can be accounted for as a positive, as non-athletes are also aware of the widely accepted fact that one of the effects of sport on mental health is stress relief.

    A number of methods have evolved for assessing our health in parallel with the expansion of scientific knowledge. Medicine describes our health through objective methods and measurable variables. Of course, we also have an image of our own state of health, which, for all its subjectivity, is a good indicator of our physical and mental processes. Our sense of health can be a genuine reflection of our state of health, which directly and indirectly affects our professional/academic performance. We have a constantly expanding knowledge of the beneficial effects of the increase in physical activity on health, and its mechanism of action can be interpreted from a number of aspects. The examination of the health and physical activity of the secondary school age group provides useful information for individuals, parents, and those working in the field of education (education policymakers and educators). In this research, we examined the relationship between the level of physical activity (relative to the recommendations of WHO) and the sense of the health of high school students, their school performance, and the appearance of various emotional factors. Then we complimented it with a study of the motivational background for those aged 14 to 18. During the analysis, we identified a significant link between high levels of physical activity and the high quantified value associated with the sense of health. We found no significant correlation between academic performance and physical activity levels. We experienced a significant relationship between emotional factors when comparing the categories of happiness, mood, energy, as well as sadness, and fatigue with physical activity. Among the motivators for exercise, the improvement of physical condition is prominent, and this age group clearly rejects the expectations of others. It is also instructive for those working in the field of physical education that the experience of exercise is critical for members of the age group.

       The health status of the Hungarian population is worse than that of other similarly developed countries’ populations. An important cause for this phenomenon can be characterized as a high prevalence of unhealthy living and deficient health literacy. An important tool to change is efficient health promotion in kindergarten and school. Children and young people spend many years in these institutions, and the way their teachers contact them will influence their health behavior. Therefore it is highly important that holistic health promotion has been prescribed for all schools and kindergartens since 2012 in Hungary. Our paper presents reasonableness and a short summary of the holistic health promotion in educational institutions as well as the helping actions given for teachers by the government.

  • Impact of the Pandemic on Adults' Social Relationships and Health

    During the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath, numerous researchers have investigated the societal impacts of the pandemic, the resulting changes of which continue to be integral parts of people's lives. Generally, it can be stated that individuals' health behaviors have significantly transformed due to the restrictions. In our study, we examined Hungarian adults (n=336), focusing on assessing their experiences related to harmful addictions, mental health, and maintaining social relationships. The respondents reported that over half of them communicated and/or met with acquaintances and friends less during the pandemic. 72% of the respondents reported smoking the same amount, while 36% consumed the same amount of alcohol as before the pandemic. Regarding harmful addictions (alcohol consumption and smoking), a proportional relationship was found between the frequencies of the two variables. Those who smoked more than before the pandemic also consumed alcohol more frequently, and this trend was also observed in the decrease in frequencies. Respondents who did not experience changes in their smoking habits also held similar views on alcohol consumption. Women respondents exhibited greater emotional fluctuation than male respondents when asked about the frequency of experiencing depression and feelings of hopelessness. Overall, the majority of participants (54.8%) experienced worsened mental health due to the pandemic, and it was found that the adverse effects of the pandemic period were more pronounced on women's (60.3%) mental health compared to men’s (46.2%).

    The importance of physical activity is increasingly recognized by many people, both laymen, and professionals. Regular exercise at all ages contributes to strengthening the different dimensions of health. Ideally, physical activity is integrated into our lives from an early age, however, based on public health indicators, unfortunately, the opposite trend is to be seen in Hungary. One of the most striking features of demographic processes is the continuous increase in the number and proportion of the elderly population. In an ageing society, it is crucial to maintain good health conditions for people over 65 for the following reasons: to improve the quality of life of the individual, to reduce health expenditures, and because of the inevitably increased number of elderly in the labour market. National demographic changes are just as characteristic in Hajdúböszörmény, so it is worth examining the components of the physical activity of the local population. The aim of our research is to explore the characteristics of exercising related to work, transport, household work, and leisure sports. Unfortunately, as well as the amount, the quality of the population’s time spent exercising is below international recommendations. Mapping the exercising motives of the elderly confirmed our assumption that the preservation of physical and mental health is the main drive behind the activity of the target group.

  • HEALTH AWARENESS IN WORKPLACES OF HAJDÚ-BIHAR COUNTY

    In our research, we examined the importance of maintaining the mental and physical health of employees from an employer perspective. To this end companies in Hajdú-Bihar county who are listed in the TOP 100 based on their net revenue were interviewed. The most represented economic sectors in this relation were processing, services, trade, agriculture, and construction. We examined whether companies provided any benefits to their employees concerning health awareness. Among respondents those who offered various services of medical specialists and/or discounted gym or swim passes in addition to compulsory medical examinations were hard to find, however, more employers organize health and sports days. In conclusion, while workplace health promotion is necessary it requires a change in employers’attitudes.

    The program you want to show is novel because it provides assistance to job seekers who face mental, social, or health problems, it also provides a complex service package that includes labor market, social and health services. The program can respond individually to the existing difficulties, thus improving the quality of life of the participants. The aim of the study is to examine the factors that determine the behavioral changes and the quality of life quality among the job seekers who can't be included in employment for mental, social, or health reasons. Methods: In our study, we monitored changes in general well-being, livelihoods, financial backgrounds, family backgrounds, health problems, work-related problems, social services, and healthcare services during the five months of the program, and analyzed the results obtained by quantitative and qualitative methods. Conclusion: Well-being has a positive effect on both the subjective emotional experiences of employees, their work performance, and their workplace behavior. We think that society should pay attention to sensitizing employers, develop insurance programs for complex packages of support, to ensure workplace factors influencing the improvement of the quality of life for workers' attention. The quality of life of our study confirmed that adequate support (mentoring, counseling, through programs supporting), to increase job satisfaction, workplace, which has many advantages in terms of not only the individual, but employers and society: improving the quality of work, the Workplace behavior and morale, less absenteeism, lower sickness, and fluctuation rates, and employment rate increases.

       Development is a continuous process influenced by several factors. If practitioners would like to ensure children's and young persons' optimal social and emotional development and school performance, they have to monitor both development and academic achievement from early childhood until the age of 19. In the UK, more than one million children struggle with speech, language, and communication problems so early identification is of vital importance. If identification is missed or late, it may have detrimental effects on the child’s or young person’s psychological, mental, and physical health. Multi-agency teams work in collaboration in order to provide relevant help to those in need.

  • SCHOOL SOCIAL WORK IN HUNGARY AND IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

    The study aims to present and compare school social work in Hungary and the United Kingdom. The aim of the research is to get to know the activities in the two countries in more detail, pointing out the similarities and differences in practice. The research questions shed light on the conditions of the operation of social work in Hungarian and British schools, the cooperation of the social worker with the educational institution, and the activities carried out there. We conducted semi-structured interviews as a method of research with 14 social workers in close contact with schools and specifically school social workers. The operation of mental health teams organized in educational institutions not only serves to protect children but the establishment and coordination of such a professional team can also increase the acceptance and influence of the school social worker in the institution.

  • FACTORS OF PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT IN RELATION TO CHILDREN’S BEHAVIORAL SYMPTOMS

    In our study, the features of contact between parents and teachers and the particular patterns they take were examined in connection with children’s behavioral symptoms. With cluster analysis, seven clearly analyzable patterns of contact were identified, the two most frequent of which (unifacial and formal) do not favor problem solving, nor provide parental satisfaction.

       Two patterns (flexible and adaptive) proved to be the most satisfying and the most effective. Children’s symptoms (social problems, anxiety, somatization, attention deficit, deviant behavior, aggressivity) are significantly related to the quality of parent-teacher contact. In the case of the less favorable and less effective contact forms, parents report more behavioral symptoms, while in the case of the flexible, adaptive, emotionally satisfying, and effective problem-solving contact forms, there are fewer symptoms. These results draw attention to important tasks on many levels: to work out operable patterns of parent-teacher contact, to better understand the role and tasks of teacher training, and the need to involve experts to assist in developing parent-teacher contact, which is also indispensable in terms of helping and developing children and their mental health.

  • ROMA UNIVERSITY STUDENTS' IDEAS ON THE CHOICE OF PARTNERS:

    Finding the right partner can improve the individual’s financial situation, help him/her achieve his/her goals, and support his/her mental health. It may also have an impact on the integration of Roma partners into the majority of society. Roma young people studying in higher education may have different options of choosing a partner than their (Roma) lower-educated peers. The cost of further education is often the lack of early marriage, which is common in the traditional Roma community, while the benefit can be the development of a wider network of contacts by getting to know university colleagues. In our research, we examined the choice of a partner of a special group of Roma university students, the Roma college students concerning their ideas about this and their practical implementation. The study is based on the EVS (European Value Survey) questionnaire on relationships filled in by the respondents and structured life path interviews (N=186). Based on the survey, the college students included in the study did not consider the origin of their partner to be relevant, while in practice they preferred a similar partner related to the origin and education. The Roma college can also function as a field for choosing partners, and many of the students have chosen their partners from here. In Roma colleges, students are placed in a peer community that supports them through further education. Among their peers, they can even find a partner who is similar to them not only in his/her origin but also in his/her education.

  • Supporting Students with Anxiety in Their Studies

    Anxiety is a prevalent mental health issue among children and adolescents, which can have a detrimental impact on their personal relationships and academic performance. This study aimed to identify the manifestations of anxiety in educational settings, the effects of anxiety on educational activities, and the types of support that should be provided to students with anxiety. The following research questions guided this study:  1) How is anxiety expressed among 13-14-year-old students when in school? 2)How does anxiety affect the 13-14-year-old students' educational activities? 3) What kind of support should be provided to students with anxiety at school? The participants were 26 students aged 13-14 from various Estonian schools. The data was gathered for analysis via interviews and a questionnaire. A mixed-methods approach was employed. According to the research, children experience anxiety both before and during a test or presentation. It appears that each student expresses fear at school in a different way. Students who learn remotely report feeling less anxious during class activities. This is because they do not have to answer in front of the class or turn on the camera when participating in online lessons. Furthermore, students aged 13-14 prefer to talk to their friends who are also experiencing anxiety than to adults who do not understand their anxiety. Finally, the students' answers revealed that the teacher should ask all the students with equal frequency to present their homework. It is also recommended that anxious students be supported by helping them recall what they have learned and use different methods to assess their knowledge. The students stated that they require a quiet and safe place to be alone at school. There is a need to raise awareness about anxiety symptoms and ways for teachers to support students.
