  • THE SOCIO-DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS AND ACADEMIC PREPAREDNESS OF STEM STUDENTS IN HUNGARY

    Although the dropout behavior and labor market opportunities of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) students and the masculinization of STEM fields are all well-researched topics in STEM research, there is a very limited body of literature focusing on the social background and academic preparedness of STEM applicants. Thus, in this research, we compared STEM and non-STEM students based on their type of settlement, type of secondary school program, the rate of students coming from a disadvantaged background, extra points given for academic accomplishments, and total application score. To identify variables that significantly predict getting admitted to a STEM field, we conducted binary logistic regression. During our research, we conducted the analysis using the 2017 Hungarian Admission Database. Our sample consisted of those who got admitted to a full-time BA/BSc or undivided course (N = 41324). According to our results, STEM students cannot be identified as a disadvantaged group either in terms of their social background or their lack of academic preparedness. According to the results of the binary logistic regression, the main predictors of getting admitted to a STEM field are gender (male), having a language certificate, and having a vocational training certificate. The main goal of our research was to explore whether the individual characteristics of STEM students can be the reason behind the high attrition rates specific to STEM fields. Since our results did not support this conclusion, we suppose to further investigate the role of institutional variables (such as climate, the selective approach of college teachers, and high academic expectations) in dropouts.

  • THE EXPERIENCES OF PHYSIOTHERAPY IN PRESCHOOLS IN THE LIGHT OF A KINDERGARTEN RESEARCH IN HAJDÚBÖSZÖRMÉNY

    The literature and research on physiotherapy in Hungary are not as complete as the research on physical education, so this article is also incomplete. Our research aimed to report on the experiences of physiotherapy sessions for preschool children within the physical education sector, as this area is less researched. Our research presents the experiences of children and their parents who have participated in pre-school physiotherapy in a sample of children attending the Good Shepherd Reformed Kindergarten in Hajdúböszörmény. The results are presented based on the analysis of a questionnaire filled in by 50 parents and an interview with the physiotherapy teacher who teaches in the kindergarten. The survey shows that 8% of parents of preschool children did not know that their child was attending such sessions, 92% of parents were informed, but 20% did not know how many development sessions their child was attending. The majority of parents follow up on their child's development, but consider the information provided by the teacher to be insufficient. The vast majority of parents were also aware of their child's diagnosis. Parents' opinions showed that they consider the existence of physiotherapy sessions important, as they consider it essential for the effective development of a growing organism. Parents also noted positive effects of physiotherapy sessions, such as improved posture, flexibility, reduced orthopaedic deformities, increased endurance, or improved dexterity and hand-foot coordination. Another important aspect, according to parents, is that these sessions are free of charge, take place during nursery school hours and they are playful. According to the physiotherapy teacher, the number of sessions is not sufficient to achieve optimal improvement, given that the vast majority of children only receive development in kindergarten. These results are useful and can be used in the training of kindergarten teachers or further training courses.

  • TEACHING GERMAN IN NYÍREGYHÁZA TO STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS

    The present paper deals with the issues of teaching a second language to school-aged children with SEN in Nyíregyháza, Hungary. In our research, we made semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions featuring 25 children with Special Educational Needs in grades 7 and 8 in order to gain more information about their opinion and attitudes concerning German lessons at school, which in turn might help to unify the material and/or the methods. We also contacted the children’s parents (25) to fill out a questionnaire about their impressions and opinions with regard to their children’s German learning experience at school. Finally, we asked the two teachers to paint a broader picture of teaching German to children with SEN. The research took place in spring 2020 in Nyíregyháza. We did our research in Viktor Göllesz Vocational School, Skills Development School, Student Hostel, and Integrated Special Educational Methodological Institution as well as in Gusztáv Bárczi Primary School, Skills Development School, Student Hostel, and Integrated Special Educational Methodological Institution. To carry out our research, we asked for the parents’ and the head teachers’ ethical consent. Our experience underlines that all the participants in the teaching process feel that there is a need for unification. It would be much easier for all parties to have a German coursebook written for students aged 13-16 with SEN. Based on the answers of the language teachers, we came to the conclusion that they pay attention to individual development and playful, communicative language teaching, even though it is challenging to teach German to children with SEN, as they often have difficulties in their mother tongue.

  • THE IMPACT OF CONTINUOUS AND DIFFERENTIATED EDUCATION FOR FORMING OF COMMUNITY ATTITUDE IN STUDENTS OF SENIOR CLASSES

    Background and objectives: In longitudinal research (2006–2010) we examined the progression of upper elementary school students’ self-assessment, self-image, attitude toward community, and change in their anxiety level in order to find out to what degree carefully planned and continuously differentiated education influence these traits of students’ behaviour. In this present study, we address the change in their attitude toward the community.   Method: We used the measurement tool developed by Hunyadyné and modified by Tóth for measuring the attitude toward the community (Appendix 1). Hypothesis: We assumed that as a result of differentiation the upper elementary school students’ attitude toward community will progress earlier and more effectively in the pilot than the control group (school community, the society; the class’ cohesion force, self-government’s role and competence, the function of public opinion, potential sociometric relation within the class, group activities). Results: The controlled and planned differentiated development made the areas of attitude toward community advance more in the pilot group than in the group going under only scarce differentiated development. We experienced significant differences in the scales of relation to the broader community, group activity, and class cohesion. Conclusions: Results justify that appropriate differentiated development has got an advantageous impact on attitude toward the community.

  • Moderate-Risk Prematurity does not Hinder the Development of Reading and Spelling Abilities Despite the Lower IQ

    Background and aims: It is well established that the impacts of prematurity are often long-lasting in the various domains of development, however, the published findings concerning the prevalence, severity, and background of disorders are inconsistent. As yet research into the development of abilities contributing to the academic progress in Hungarian preterm children has been scarce. Our study aimed to find out to what extent prematurity impeded the reading and spelling abilities in school age and to contribute some information on the cognitive background of the performances. Methods: Three groups of 7 – 12 year-old children participated in the study. The target group consisted of moderate-risk preterms. For comparison two groups of full-term children were tested: typically developing good readers and dyslexics. To assess the reading and spelling abilities the Hungarian version of the 3DM (Dyslexia Differential Diagnosis) was used. Cognitive abilities were assessed using the Hungarian adaptation of the WISC-IV and the Rey Complex Figure Test. Results: The reading and spelling performances of the full-term good readers and the preterms did not differ and the preterms scored higher than the dyslexics. The cognitive tests did not offer any direct explanation to this, since the preterms lagged behind the full-term good readers in the WISC-IV full-scale IQ as well as in several specific cognitive measures. The CART Decision Tree served to analyse the relationships, allowing to reveal the interactions and the moderation effects. Discussion: The CHC model as a theoretical framework and the CART Decision Tree statistical analysis proved to be fruitful to disentangle the complex interplay of the cognitive background factors. There are various cognitive paths of acquiring the reading and spelling skills, e.g., in case of relatively lower IQs the sufficient levels of memory and processing speed may ensure success.

  • THE ROLE OF SOCIO-ECONOMIC BACKGROUND VARIABLES IN NETFIT MEASUREMENT

    Assessment of physical indicators and motor skills is the Hungarian National Unified Student Fitness Test (hereinafter referred to as "NETFIT"), which was introduced in public education from the 2013/14 academic year, which aims to demonstrate the effects of everyday physical education on the fitness and physiological parameters of students. When showing the national results of the tests, it is also shown that the fitness condition is determined by the genetic conditions, the family background and the environment (Csányi et al., 2015, Csányi and Kaj 2017) so results can be interpreted in a common context of these factors. In our research, we aimed at examining NETFIT data from Budapest secondary school students, supplemented by family background surveys. During our research, we sought to find out how the fitness profile of boys studying at the Budapest Technical Vocational Training Center is based on the results of the NETFIT tests. What is the relationship between family background and NETFIT performance?   Our survey was carried out at one of the largest schools of the Budapest Technical Vocational Training Center at the Technical Training Center in Újpesti Two Teaching Grammar School and Technical College of the Budapest Technical Vocational Training Center. A total of 342 pupils were included in the study, where a questionnaire of 35 questions was used to investigate the correlations of NETFIT results and socioeconomic background indicators.   Numerous studies have shown that the more favorable SES students have generally more favorable fitness indicators (Jiménez-Pavon et al., 2010, Ortega et al., 2013, Vandendriessche et al., 2012). There is also a great deal of evidence that country-specific regional status indicators are higher in regions with more favorable SES (Charlton et al., 2014, Golle et al., 2014, Cleland et al., 2009, Welk, Saint-Maurice and Csányi, 2015). During our research, we found that students in need of development mostly come from small communities, with some 58.3% developing. These values ​​differ significantly (khi = 218.6, df = 20, p = 0.000). The basic pillow of the lifestyle is the family (Field 2018), the habits of which shape the child's relationship with sports, and later it is very difficult to change them (Herpain et al., 2017, Herpainé 2018). The study showed that the father's sporting habits are decisive in the case of the examined boy's pupils, but the mother's sporting habit does not have the same effect on the sportsman's behavior. We propose to extend the NETFIT test bundle with the socioeconomic background examination of the examined person.

    The paper explores the journey of an organization that is a small intentional community, whose objective is to contribute to the new forms of sociality as well as the artistic and cultural life of the youth in the city of Tetova in North Macedonia. For the sake of better comprehension concerning how mass media can affect the public discourse, a case study is examined of a recent incident that happened in the community. The methodology used for this study is applied anthropology as a practice, which involves a problem-solving approach that draws on the knowledge and skills of anthropology to develop culturally sensitive solutions to the challenges this community faces.

  • THE EFFECT OF PICTURE EXCHANGE COMPLEX EARLY INTERVENTION ON CHILDREN’S SOCIAL SKILLS WITH ASD

    In the present research, we were interested in the correlations between the development of cognitive and communication skills, along with musical social abilities in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This was verified by correlation design based on the abilities of ASD children between 11, 3, and 5 years of age. Based on this, we created a complex image shifting early development program that targets the development of cognitive skills and speech through music. We observed using Custom Design what changes this development program results in the children’s socialization. The program consists of 12 occasions, with three children participating in the activities, during which we used our own “Together with Bo!” image shifting tool.  Our research reveals that correlations can be recognized between these abilities and that cognitive, communication skills, and musical abilities together with are predictors of social abilities. This is also evidenced by the effectiveness of the development program, as not only targeted skills have evolved, but also socialization. Consequently, we can state that learning through gaming also plays an important role in socialization.

    This article pertains to the relation between high sensitivity and test anxiety. The timeliness of this study comes from the observation that although more and more research is being conducted on high sensitivity abroad, high sensitivity as a character trait has not been researched in Hungary, especially in relation to the special treatment highly sensitive children may require. In this study, the main research question is whether a higher level of sensitivity correlates positively with a higher level of test anxiety. Sample: 133 persons (attributes: Mage=15.3; gender distribution 25.56% boys, 74.44% girls; grade distribution 78.95% 9th grade, 21.05% 10th grade). Method: a questionnaire package completable anonymously online made up of 3 questionnaires. The questionnaires used were a self-constructed demographic questionnaire, the TAI-H questionnaire to measure test anxiety (Sipos, Sipos & Spielberger, 1988), and the HSPS-H questionnaire to measure sensitivity (Aron, 1999, transl. Komjáthy, 2011; Pluess, 2013). Results: students showing a higher level of sensitivity show significantly higher test anxiety levels than their less-sensitive peers. Conclusions: considering that (alongside multiple other factors) the given character trait of high sensitivity can influence test anxiety levels and conclusively also performance, it would be advisable to take students’ sensitivity into account in teaching practice.

  • CHARACTERISTICS OF THE HUNGARIAN AND CROSS-BORDER FOOTBALL ACADEMY IN RELATION TO THE ROLE AND CHARACTERISTICS OF COACH

    Football is equally popular in and around Hungary, despite the fact that currently, Hungarian football has very few footballers who are good enough to play in internationally recognized teams. Youth trainers bear a special responsibility in talent development, as they not only have to be excellent sports professionals but also need to have a positive influence on the young players’ lifestyle, attitude and activities beyond sports. Based on the above, the purpose of the study was to explore differences and similarities in trainers’ roles among the footballers in Hungary and in the Hungarian speaking areas of neighbouring countries. It was also our goal to take age into consideration of the football academies. The study was carried out in of one the eight major football academies of Hungary, and at a football academy located in a Hungarian speaking area of a neighbouring country. In the study, we gathered data from young footballers (n=146) belonging to four age groups. We used the questionnaire method. The questions were aimed at the young footballers’ attitudes and experience about the role of their trainers. The findings show that the young players and age groups in and outside of Hungary have a different view on the work of their trainers and their influence on their life. Comparing the academies and the age groups, marked differences were found. The footballers of the neighbouring country generally tended to have a higher appreciation towards their trainers’ roles and the main characteristics of their trainers, and also there were smaller differences between the age groups in that country. In the case of footballers from Hungary, the more they approached the age of being contracted as a professional sportsperson, the more they valued the factors affecting this step; while younger footballers mostly mentioned pedagogical elements. It would be important for trainers to be familiar with these findings and tailor their work accordingly so that pedagogical work can play a crucial role in talent development.

    Vocational schools providing special tasks comparative analysis of its documents in regions with different economic status. The study deals with the examination of dropout reduction strategies of vocational schools in the regions of Northern Hungary, Northern Great Plains and Western Hungary. We are looking for the answer to what pedagogical methods are used by vocational schools and the teachers who teach there to reduce dropout. Our research was a document analysis, which included an overview of the pedagogical/professional programs of vocational schools based on specific criteria. We are looking for an answer to the question, how does disadvantage compensation appear in the pedagogical and professional programs of vocational schools.

  • The Analysis of Early School Leaving from the Aspect of Inter-Sectionality

    Hungary ranks in the bottom third of the European Union regarding early school leaving, falling further and further away from the EU average year on year. The lower educational attainment and higher drop-out rates of Roma/Gypsy youth have been confirmed by several studies. Still, the descriptions are often two-dimensional, as in international approaches. The Hungarian Youth 2020 database allowed for a wider range of explanatory variables in the analysis. In our study, we examine the educational attainment of Roma youth aged 20-29 and then compare subsamples of Roma and non-Roma dropouts. Finally, we run a binary regression model on the database with early school leaving as the dependent variable and explanatory variables as background variables that may shape the odds of early school leaving. The social and economic backgrounds of Roma and non-Roma ESL learners differed, while parental education and subjective financial situation showed a less favourable pattern for Roma. The effect of Roma identity was significant in the regression model, but the explanatory power did not reach the effect of lower parental education. In other words, ethnic background is a crucial factor in dropout, while some segments of the family background are more significant.

    Integration has been an international trend over the last two or three decades, the impact of which is increasingly evident in Hungary. EU resolutions emphasize social inclusion (UNESCO 1995, Europe 1998), ie advocating that children with special educational needs should not be unfairly discriminated against and excluded from society (UNESCO 1995). Integrated education in public education is a means of creating opportunities (Mesterházi, 2002).  In the integrated and segregated institution we present the results of a questionnaire survey of nursing teachers (n = 86) on the issue of integration, we were curious about how receptive the experts were. that a significant proportion of teachers in mainstream schools agree partly with integrated education on the basis of the responses given. Both their teachers and the special educators do not consider it appropriate, enough to implement integrated education.

    This paper's goal is to develop an appropriate systematic literature review of the research that has investigated how ethical leadership affects employees' performance within an enterprise. The growth of multinational corporations provides a new dimension to the investigation of leadership that takes into account the effect of diverse country cultures. This systematic literature review analyzed publications and articles published within the last decade (2009- 2020). Based on the overall research of the 19 analyzed studies top managers, leaders, and supervisors are supposed to set a good example for their team members and employees by modeling ethical behavior. The effectiveness of top managers and leaders on employees and their performance has been thoroughly investigated in many research. All hypotheses were supported by the data collected from 19 papers, which showed that ethical leadership improves employees' in-role job performance. These findings have important research and practical consequences. Additionally, since ethical leadership is seen to be essential in enhancing the accepted business strategy in the achievement of organizations’ objectives and goals, this research will concentrate on the effects of an ethical leadership style on the performance of employees.

  • TALENT AND EDUCATION IN THE CSR OF COMPANIES

    According to a broader definition offered by Kotler and Lee (2007, 10 p), the focus of corporate social responsibility (CSR) is on „selecting an initiative that will do the most good for the social issue as well as the corporation”. Following this line of reasoning, the purpose of this study is to examine through the use of practical examples those activities of CSR that can be in connection with the category of special treatment. To be more specific, these are the CSR activities related to talent and education. The CSR activities of five companies were evaluated by performing a content analysis of their websites.   The content analysis of the Sustainability reports and websites of the selected companies, supplemented with the latest company news of 2015 and the first 6 months of 2016, has opened the door to the preparation of a wide-spectrum activity inventory on the CSR areas related to talent and education. In this way, the aim of this study has thus been fulfilled.

    Nowadays sedentary lifestyle is at the forefront. In our spare time, both passive and active recreational trends and activities appear. The role of leisure sports is getting more and more appreciated among health-conscious consumers. Several studies proved that regular sports activities are projective factors against lifestyle-dependent diseases, so they are excellent means of prevention. Methods: Our study examined the leisure habits of Romanian and Hungarian residents, their activity in sport, their attitude towards active recreation activities, and their openness to new methods. The results were analyzed by using SPSS software. Results: The results underline that passive leisure activities (watching television, listening to music, reading, surfing the internet) are popular in people's lives, although most people live a sedentary lifestyle. People, who exercise in their free time have noticed a number of positive effects on themselves. 80-90% of respondents interested in new methods and would like to take part in sports events at work, at school, or at university.

    This text delves into the redefinition of the role of women among the Bukusu of Bungoma County in western Kenya from the year 1945 to 2023. The paper’s main objective is to investigate the origin of the change of roles of women among the Bukusu people. The research holds the hypothesis that there is an origin for the prevailing transformations of roles of women among the Bukusu. It makes use of existing literature such as books, journals, articles, magazines, and newspapers, and existing observations. This research is significant in adding new knowledge to the anthropological studies of women with a particular focus on the Bukusu women of Bungoma County in Kenya. The research design employed in the article is historical methods with the utilization of books, journals, and research works as secondary sources that will back and complement the author’s observations. The article establishes that changes in the roles of women in the Bukusu community emanate from missionary activities, colonialism especially the colonial cash crop economy, and political modernization in the region.

    Doctor Mandica Manja Kovačević (1929–2011) was a professor at several Croatian teacher training colleges (Čakovec, Kutina, and Gospić) and the author of three books and some 60 papers in various journals. She moderated a weekly ten-minute program for the local radio station in Gospić in the first decade of the 21st century. Thus, more than 300 radio contributions were produced, of which seventy were published in the book “Life on the Highest Wave” (Gospić, 2010). By researching and presenting phonographic recordings not included in the aforementioned book, this paper focused on the topics dealing with the affairs from the Croatian society in the first decade of the 21 century serving as an original sample by means of which Professor Kovačević had presented her personal views and attitudes resulting from life experience and local and traditional expectations. Professor Kovečević’s original reviews have attracted the attention of a large number of listeners because they have been able to find answers to questions that are usually contemplated by a contemporary man torn apart between existential challenges and spiritual search.

    Nowadays, there is a strong focus on students with learning and behavioural difficulties, both internationally and nationally. Their growing number year by year is challenging teachers to develop their skills and to learn new methods to alleviate or eliminate the problems these students are struggling with. Numerous studies have focused on the underlying causes of the achievement of the average student, while relatively little research has examined the individuals and factors that influence the achievement of students with BESD. This study analyses one interview with a focus group and five semi-structured interviews with teachers of development. The current exploratory interview study focuses on the role that developmental teachers and teachers play in the educational lives of students with these difficulties, and whether the parents of these students are more involved in their school education than parents of average students.

    Developing good views on lifelong learning should not only be one of the goals of all teachers but also national and international strategies. Experiences, how some of the students participating in the training do not see the importance of this in all respects. A study analyzing individual factors of lifelong learning from the student's point of view examined and evaluated the opinions of students of different age groups (Gőgh, 2018). One of the main goals of the study was to explore the factors that students face with regard to lifelong learning, those factors that are most likely to lose their pleasures from learning and which can motivate them. From the point of view of the IPOO learning model, the resulting responses and deductible consequences may also be more clearly illuminated, so it is worth examining them from this approach. The results of the study are from a questionnaire-based study (n = 378), which is representative of the institutions participating in the survey, the BGéSZC Kossuth Lajos Bilingual Vocational Secondary School of Technology. It is worth thinking about the honest responses of students because they can include consequences on the institutional level and in general, with which learning motivations and willingness to learn can also be influenced in a positive direction that is essential for lifelong learning.

    The largest population movement in the history of Europe since the Second World War has been the migration process of recent years, which also appeared in Hungary in 2015. The significant demographic movement has resulted in important social reactions and has developed different narratives in the civil and also in the power fields. In Hungary, the refugee issue has become a decisive topic of political discourse since 2015, and the party coalition was among the first in Europe to represent the security policy. As a result, the refugees appeared as a source of danger, so the government has rejected them. In spite of this, the grassroots volunteer groups were organized in the civil sphere, who helped the refugee masses passing through Hungary in 2015. This paper analyses a very brief but very intense manifestation of Hungarian civil society involvement as a social response to current conflicts. We will look at how the 2015 migration wave grassroots crisis management took place in Debrecen. This cultural anthropological research is based on online and offline participatory observations and semi-structured interviews and informal conversations with volunteers who helped refugees in Debrecen. This study focuses on the motivations, attitudes, social responsibility of volunteers and their voluntary activity embedded in broader socio-political conditions. The first part of the article shows the formation and operational peculiarities of solidarity philanthropic organization with refugees in Debrecen. Then follows the individual aspects of volunteering. Finally, it will be discussed the socio-political context of the civil voluntary movement, the political interpretations of refugee assistance, and its impact on volunteering. With outlining a segment of the contemporary volunteer phenomenon we can get closer to provide a framework for understanding the possibilities of the recent civil sphere.

    Programs aimed to eliminate segregated life conditions have appeared again in domestic integration practice in the last two decades. The goal of “Roma settlement programs” is the implementation of complex interventions improving social integration and housing conditions in communities, and social work has an important role in this process. We will examine in our study the relevance of social work in an ongoing integration program in the framework of a survey that questioned social workers and residents of the segregates. The research focuses on two aspects of the programs. First, the social workers’ experiences will be examined about their work and processes that complicate it, and secondly, a survey conducted among the target group will investigate the utilization of the elements in the program and the characteristics of the relations between the target groups. Finally, the policy background of the programs, changes in the regulations of social work, and opinions of the professionals and target groups will be introduced compared similar programs in nearly a hundred settlements in the country.

    Luang Island is a small island located near Timor Leste and southwest of Australia. Geographical location, global economic considerations, global climate, and the policies of the Indonesian government all have an impact on the existence and culture of the Luang Island people. The people of Luang Island have local wisdom called Hygera Lai that assists them in developing a relationship with nature. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between Hygera Lai and the environment among Luang Island residents. This is a qualitative study using an ecological anthropological lens. Content analysis was used to analyze the data collected. This study establishes a link between Hygera Lai and the Luang people's natural environment.
