    The Laudation of Carl Irlet, the Organizer of the Child Relief Action in Switzerland, at the University of Debrecen. The University of Debrecen awarded in 1925 two protestants organizers of the
    child relief project with the title of doctor honoris causa: the Swiss clergyman Carl Irlet and the Dutch baron Willem Carel Adrien van Vredenburch. Zsigmond Varga, professor of theology in Debrecen, wrote in his
    laudation, how important was the role of Irlet in organisation and coordination of the child relief action, and how important was the role of the children to create a positive image of Hungary because of political
    and economic reasons. The document of award was signed by Miklós Horthy, Regent of Hungary and Kunó Klebelsberg, Minister of Education and Religion.

    The world-famous theologian professor spent a significant part of his life in Debrecen. Between 1928 and 1932, he studied at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Debrecen, where he graduated, and in 1942 he received his doctorate in theology. At the end of 1945, he was appointed public extraordinary professor at the same faculty, and in the summer of 1949, he was appointed public ordinary professor. In the academic year 1949/50, as Dean of the Faculty of Theology, he was responsible for the establishment of the organizational structure of the Debrecen Theological Academy of the Tiszántúli Church District, which had been separated from the university by government action and had become an independent institution. In 1966, the church leadership transferred Pákozdy and his department from Debrecen to the Reformed Theological Academy in Budapest, where he taught future pastors for about two decades. Professor Pákozdy, a religious historian, has been awarded honorary doctorates by two foreign universities for his scholarly research on the Old Testament and the Dead Sea Scrolls, and for his translation of the Bible into Hungarian. In the twilight of his life, obtaining the Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences degree was made possible.

    István Csűry was one of the most educated people in Hungarian library affairs, with an extensive professional experience, sensitivity towards problems, and also an initiating worker with an unprecedented receptivity to new endeavors. István Csűry’s first and only workplace was the University Library of Debrecen, where after about a decade of working as a librarian, served as director from 1956 until his death, and elevated the institution to a second national library. The study reflects on the library areas where István Csűry has achieved essentially new results.

    History of the Stomatology Clinic in Debrecen under the Leadership of Professor József Szentpétery and Professor Gusztáv Keszthelyi (19792000). From July 1, 1979 József Szentpétery was appointed to lead the Stomatology Clinic in Debrecen. His main task was the curriculum-development of dental education, that started three years ago and to bring it closer to the curriculum of other Hungarian universities.

    The lack of staff and facility also made it difficult to organize education. He brought teachers from Szeged and employed fresh graduates. In 1981 the new building of the clinic was completed.

    From July 1986 Professor Gusztáv Keszthelyi became the director of the clinic. He completed the reconstruction of Oral Surgery, established a new lecture room and created departments. In 1997-98 he created a new phantom practice room, thus more students could attend the 3rd year preclinical practice. He inspired lecturers to do scientific work. Between 19942001 nine lecturers were awarded with scientific degrees. He wrote and edited a textbook that survived 2 editions. He went to early retirement in 2001, was later appointed Professor emeritus and returned to teach in Hungarian and in English.

     

     

     

  • LÁSZLÓ CSERNÁK (1740-1816), A PROFESSOR OF DEVENTER AND HIS LEGACY IN DEBRECEN.

    . A former alumnus of the Reformed College of Debrecen spent years in the Netherlands, preparing for his hoped job in Hungary as a professor of Philosophy in one of the Reformed colleges. Although he completed his study in Utrecht and in Groningen in Philosophy and Medicine with excellent results, he was never invited to a cathedra in Hungary. He was offered a job in Deventer which he accepted and became a professor of Philosophy. He married a Dutch woman – Elisabeth Slichtenbree – and started a new, fulfilling life in the Netherlands. After 12 years living in Deventer, he received an invitation to a post of professor of History, Ancient Greek, and Eloquence in Sárospatak, which he refused due to his engagements (job and family) in the Netherlands. A couple of years later he was invited to Groningen for a professorship, which he refused, too. His scientific work Cribrum Arithmeticum was published in 1811, and Csernák sent examples of it to Hungary and Transylvania. After his death he legated a huger amount of money to his Hungarian Alma Mater, which was used for public needs of the college.

    The expulsion of the well-known Hungarian classical poet, Csokonai, has been studied and reviewed several times. According to the widely-accepted interpretation, the gifted young poet was unjustly dismissed after a show trial, while his talent was not recognised. But can we challenge the whole conception?This paper aims to present the facts and events merely from the point of view of jurisdiction, applying the results, methods, and aspects of modern criminal law, hoping that we can see a more varied new picture of the trial. Hopefully, it can also contribute to the literary discourse about a traditionally accepted figure of the Hungarian literary canon.

  • THE MEASURES TAKEN BY THE REFORMED COLLEGE IN DEBRECEN DURING THE CHOLERA EPIDEMICS OF 1831 AND 1866

    In Debrecen, the cholera epidemic of 1831 caused great devastation, killing almost 7.5% of the population. The cure for the epidemic was not yet known, so preventive measures (closures, quarantine) were taken to stop the spread of it. Already the news of the disease caused anxiety among professors, who sought to get the latest news from the city. For a long time, they resisted closing the school, but when the epidemic began to take its toll in the city at the end of July, they were forced to act. Many of the students had left the school early, but those who remained were looked after by the professors. As the epidemic situation worsened, the city even considered converting the college into a hospital, but this was eventually abandoned following protests from the professors and the college's curator. School order was finally restored only in the late autumn. The start of the school year was only briefly postponed during the local epidemic of 1866.

    . From the second half of the 19th century, Hungarian cultural and book historians have been collecting information about prints that were published in foreign printing houses in the early modern period (16th-18th centuries) and have Hungarian connections. A significant part of the bibliography of publications written by Hungarian authors and published abroad in foreign languages are school papers and thesis booklets published in print by Hungarian students during their studies abroad in connection with an oral debate. Unfortunately, the publication of the data collected on thesis booklets stalled at the end of the 20th century and there is no easily accessible database of these publications available today. However, the surge in the number of publications on early modern disputation in recent years and the inclusion of theses in various academic research has made disputation research an important branch of the history of universities, education and science. This is why it is important that the publication of these Hungarica data should continue. The following list contains legal and political disputations from foreign universities of the 16th and 18th centuries, which have been discovered during decades of research and which are not included in the volume III of Régi Magyar Könyvtár and its supplementary volumes, and thus may be new to those who are interested in the period.

     

  • ZOLTÁN VARGA, PROFESSOR OF HISTORY RECTOR MAGNIFICUS OF LAJOS KOSSUTH UNIVERSITY DURING THE ACADEMIC YEAR 1955-1957

    Zoltán Varga, professor of history, had been the rector of Lajos Kossuth University in a quite controversial period. Although, the easing political tensions following Stalin’s death in the Soviet Union could be felt in Hungary as well, the Communist leadership’s insistence on power has prevented any substantial change. The reform-proposals of the university bodies remained ineffective against the political leadership. The lecturers and students thus assumed a leading role in the local events of the October 1956 revolution in Debrecen. University Rector Zoltán Varga - who was removed from his position by the revolutionary leadership – following the aftermath of the revolution, returned to his post and worked hard to save his colleagues and students from reprisals. However, due to his illness, he resigned from his post in the spring of 1957.

    1872-től kezdve egészen 1945-ig. A tanulmányi rendszer korszerűsítésnek bemutatása után rátérünk az infrastruktúra bővítésére, elsősorban a klinikák rendszerének kiépítésére. Az egyetem nagy hangsúlyt fektetett a személyi állomány fejlesztésére, létrejött a „pesti orvosi iskola”, új tanszékeket hoztak létre (pl. közegészségügy),
    nagy tantárgyakból párhuzamos tanszékeket hoztak létre, jelentősen növekedett a hallgatói létszám.
    Az első világháborúban tanárok és diákok is vállaltak frontszolgálatot. Az országban állandósult az
    orvoshiány, ezt a női hallgatók felvételével próbálták ellensúlyozni. A háború után a frontról visszatérő
    hallgatók, illetve a pozsonyi és kolozsvári menekült egyetemek hallgatóinak elhelyezése okozott nehézséget.
    A numerus clausus a nők és az alkalmatlan hallgatók létszámának csökkentését érte el. Az 1929-es gazdasági
    válság komoly megszorításokat hozott, ami a létszámcsökkenésben és tanszékek bezárásában mutatkozott
    meg. A két világháború közötti időszak mégis sikeres volt, mert nemzetközileg elismert iskolák működtek
    itt. Ebben az időszakban jöttek létre az egyetemi bajtársi szövetségek is. A második világháború alatt
    részben kiürítették a klinika telepeket és vidékre költöztették azokat. Budapest ostromát az egyetemi épületek,
    a diákság és a tanárok is megsínylették.

    In the history of domestic vocational education in agriculture,  the year 2018 has recorded itself onto the pages of history’s golden book with two significant anniversaries. Mosonmagyarovar celebrated the bicentenary of its birth and Debrecen celebrated its existence of a century and a half. These  two higher education institutions were called to life by different reasons. While Ovar opened its gates to a private initiative, in Debrecen the local farmer society was the driving force with the binding precondition to which was connected tightly to have the mother tongue education accepted by the Viennese court. The time proved afterwards that the education in Hungarian language did not go to the detriment of expertise at none of the institutions. It must be acknowledged that in the field of vocational training, Magyarovar was the one which gave the first large faculty of teachers but soon Debrecen outgrew itself to the acropolis of vocational training too. The Ministry of Agriculture solved the incidental differences of standards by switching teachers. Owing to this, some professor-individualities had the chance to teach at both places. In our compilation as a sample we selected a few meaningful personalities with great authority who are claimed to have by both university faculties.

    The Hungarian Rectors’ Conference was established in 1988 by the rectors of 19 universities in the spirit of intensifying self-organization and representation of the interests of higher education. HRC undertook and played a decisive role in the change of our higher education, in consolidating its autonomy and social role, as well as in the preparation and implementation of the first Higher Education Act. The framework of its operation, the impact and effectiveness of its activities were further shaped partly by its own aspirations and partly by the frameworks provided or limited by the current government. Recently, the role and weight of HRC both in the radically modified domestic and the changing authoritative international higher education space has sharply decreased, although its active role would be important for our institutions, science and society: the voice of universities must be heard and recognized everywhere.

    The regime change brought about significant changes in the field of book publishing, particularly in the publishing of textbooks and lecture notes. However, even from the 1990s, it is still not easy to find readily available statistical data on the emerging university publishers, their activities, and operations. The work in this direction at domestic universities is far from uniform, both in terms of organization and economic structure, as well as the completed task groups. In this study, I present the environment influencing the currently operating university publishing workshops and publishers, and begin to take stock of them, while also providing a detailed introduction to the Debrecen University Press.

    The decade after the Second World War was the heyday of nuclear research, as it became a field of great power rivalry. Sándor Szalay, head of the Institute of Experimental Physics at the University of Debrecen and head of the Institute of Nuclear Research at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, made good use of the situation and was able to employ many good specialists, including some who had been pushed aside by the state authoroties of time. However, Ernő Zichy, a chemical engineer who had previously been punished by deportation, was not able to get a job at any of his institutes because of his aristocratic background.

    Unexpectedly, during the summer of 2021, we obtained the book legacy of Professor Péter Adler. Professor Adler was the leader of the Stomatology Clinic between 1946-1978 in Debrecen and he was an internationally recognized specialist. As part of the legacy, we also received an American dental journal. The issue of 1947, which included an anonymous article written by a Hungarian dentist. It reports on his ordeal during the years of the 2nd World War. It is clear from the data and descriptions that Professor Péter Adler wrote the publication. It is a thought-provoking reading, but it shows of course a somewhat subjective approach and it should be noted that it was written for foreigners, primarily Americans. Its peculiarity is that it has not appeared up till now anywhere in Hungarian - as far as I know. His publication at the time can be dated to the beginning of the Cold War, which may explain why the author requested anonymity. The article contains important gap-filling information for the better understanding of the era.

    Kálmán Kállay was born in in Bratislava. After finishing his theology studies, he worked as a religion teacher afterwards as a reformist priest in Romania. After the first world war, he organized holidays of the Hungarian children in Netherlands. At the University of Debrecen, he worked as the professor of the Old Testament reading and related studies from 1928 until his death. Within this time period, he was the Dean of the Faculty three times, and the Rector in 1941–42. He published numerous essays and books in relation of the Old Testament.

    The Stipendium Bernardinum in Utrecht, founded in 1761, played an important role in the history of Hungarian students’ university studies in the Netherlands in the 20th century. Many Hungarian theologians have been awarded scholarships. Imre Forró was admitted to Utrecht after completing his theological studies in Debrecen. He spent first three years in Utrecht, and then applied for and won another year of scholarship from the scholarship committee to continue his research. The present paper examines several aspects of Forró’s student years: his studies, his student life at the time, and the research work he began in the 1930s, and the history of the Hungarian peregrination to Franeker. Each life story is unique, yet the studies and daily lives of the students abroad share many similarities.
