Professor of History, István Rugonfalvi Kiss served as Rector Magnificus of the Hungarian Royal István Tisza University of Debrecen in the academic year of 1932-1933. A historian of Székely origin, he first served as the local archivist of the Baron Radvánszky family estate, then he acquired a growing reputation as the chief ar...chivists of Győr County. Starting in 1911, he became college professor of history at the Arts Academy of the Debrecen Protestant College, then from 1914 until his retirement in 1942 he served as professor of Hungarian history of the newly established University of Debrecen. He served as dean several times and he was appointed Rector of the University in the academic year of 1932-1933. In historical scholarship he represented the conservative alternative, thus he was violently opposed to Gyula Szekfű’s view of history. He is the author of work on the last Hungarian uprising of noblemen as well as on the history of the Székely people. After the the Second World War, owing to his previous political activism, he was imprisoned and subsequently he lived in the circle of his family, isolated from professional activity.

It rather focuses on the unknown side of this outstanding man: a natural scientist nurtuting an unquenchable... devotion to trees and forests. As the supervisor of the clinical grounds, he fought in numerous occasions with the head gardener and the Financial Department of the university for saving each tree, especially during the felling at the construction of the Main Building. He also did his best to impede the proliferation of cats on the grounds, since the cats were to blame for the dangerously decreasing number of songbirds.

Following its establishment in Germany, the Budapest Philological Society, which was active for seven decades between 1874 and 1948, brought together specialists dealing with classical philology and modern philology. Among members were ancient studies and modern languages and literaries educating professors and teachers, who were interest...ed in these studies seriously. All the specialists published articles in the Universal Philological Bulletin, which was the journal of this society.
The study presents the managment of the society with the exact dates, mainly by general meeting records. The society had honorary members from Hungarian and foreign specialists, the best known is Achille Ratti, later pope XI. Pius.
GÉZA LENCZ, PROFESSOR OF THEOLOGY, WAS RECTOR MAGNIFICUS OF THE ROYAL ISTVÁN TISZA UNIVERSITY OF DEBRECEN FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 1925–26. He was born in Vámospércs. He completed his studies in theology in Debrecen, Vienna and Utrecht. He was a Reformed minister at Tápé, Tiszarof, and Mezőtúr, and in 19...09 he was appointed professor of dogmatics and of the philosophy of religion at the heological Academy of the Protestant College. Later he became ordinary teacher of divinity and associated studies at the University of Debrecen, founded in 1914, until his death in 1932. He was the Rector of the university in the 1925/26 academic year. He was primarily interested in the history of Hungarian Protestanism of the 16th and 17th centuries, and in dogmatics history.

The Archontology of Kossuth University for the School of Arts, the School of Sciences, and for the so-called „Central Units” between January 1, 1950, and December 31, 1990, was compiled on the...basis of the personal cards and personal files of the Personnel Department of the Rector’s Office, and the scantily documented section for the 1950s was supplemented from the annually arranged documentary material of the Personnel Office. Even so, however, the existing material fails to be complete. It is impossible to compile the archontology with perfect accuracy. Part XIII presents the complete list pertaining to the Directorate for Economic Affairs from director-general to coadjutor.
THE INVOLVMENT OF MEDICAL FACULTY OF THE TISZA ISTVÁN UNIVERSITY IN THE ORGANIZATION OF MEDICAL COURSES FOR PALADINS – THE SUGGESTION OF PROFESSOR ENDRE JENEY FROM 1937. At the end of 1936 Elemér Vargha, Deputy Mayor of Debrecen, who was the city representative of the Hungarian Red Cross, contacted first the Faculty of... Medicine of the Tisza István University to teach medical courses for paladins. Endre Jeney, the professor of economics prepared a detailed plan for two diferent age groups for 12–12 course periods. he detailed plan includes the description of course subjects, provides the schedule, the names of teachers and nurses. At the end, the course was not realized.
The compilation of basic data, lists of teachers and officials is essential for the history of the University of Debrecen. As one of the „by-products” of the publication prepared for the centenary of the University of Debrecen, wasa day-by-day list of university officials compiled. As the archives from 1914 to 1950 were extensively scrapped... in the 1950s, it is not always possible to determine the dates of the officials' activities from the surviving archives. In any case, the archontology that has been drawn up taking these into account includes the officials of the Rector’s Office, the Dean’s Offices, the Quaestura („Study Office”), the Economic Office (later the Economic Directorate) and other service institutions between the dates indicated above. The University Library staff have already appeared elsewhere.

Tivadar Hüttl, Professor of Surgery the Rector Magnificus of the Hungarian Royal István Tisza University of Debrecen during the Academic Year 1939/40. Tivadar Hüttl – whose father was the owner of a successful porcelain factory – graduated as a doctor of medicine from the University of Arts and Sciences of Budapest, and worked there...at the I. Surgery Clinic besides Professor Tibor Verebély. In 1921, he was entrusted with the management of the Surgery Clinic in Debrecen, and one year later, he became a director-professor. In his clinic, he organized sections of otorhinolaryngology, stomatology, urology, traumatology, orthopaedics, etc., which later became independent clinics. He established an important scientific school; his students came to him from all over the world. In the academic year of 1939-1940, he was the rector of the István Tisza University of Arts and Sciences of Debrecen, and the representative of the university in the Upper House of the Hungarian Parliament. In 1944, he stayed in Budapest because of the war, and after his return, he was deprived of the position of professor on indignant causes in a show trial. From 1951 to his death in 1955, he was the head physician of the National Institute of Oncology in Budapest.
FERENC ORSÓS PROFESSOR OF MEDICINE, THE RECTOR MAGNIFICUS OF ISTVÁN TISZA HUNGARIAN ROYAL UNIVERSITY IN DEBRECEN DURING THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 1923/24. Ferenc Orsós was born in Temesvár, graduated from medical school in Budapest, worked in the Institute of Pathology in Debrecen, and as a hospital commander durin...g the WWI. He was appointed a professor of pathology, and the rector of the University of Debrecen in the academic year of 1923/24. He was the professor of forensic medicine at the Péter Pázmány University from 1936 until 1944 when he leed to the West. Later on, from 1946 until his retirement in 1955 he worked as the teacher of artistic anatomy at the Art Academy in Mainz. he name of Ferenc Orsós is well-known even today, irstly in connection to the excavation of the Katyń mass graves, secondly to his active participation in the senate discussion of the so-called 3rd anti-jewish laws. His scientiic achievements have been acknowledged not just in his time, but also today, since several of his discoveries seem to be futureproof.

Representation of the Higher Educational and Scientific Institutions in the Upper House of the Hungarian Parliament in 1927–1944. The Upper House, what was the second chamber of the Hungarian Parliament, was functioning between 1927 and 1944 and followed the image of the Main House (House of Magnets) before 1918, but operated in a more democr...atic spirit and structure. Besides the aristocrats and the leaders of the church, the representatives of the higher educational and scientific institutions, and economic organizations deserved a place. The study overviews the Upper House representation of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, universities in the capital and in the country, other scientific organizations, and other institutions of higher education, and there is enclosed a list of the representatives of the above mentioned institutions exactly to the day.

Ede Neuber, Professor of Dermatology, the Rector Magnificus of the Hungarian Royal István Tisza University of Debrecen during the Academic Year 1931/32. Professor Ede Neuber was the organizer and first director of the Clinic of Dermatology and Sexual Pathology, and nationally, it was he who first organized the he...alth supervision of university students. Again, he took part in spearheading the campaign against venereal diseases also through curtailing epidemic diseases by means of creating a law (lex veneris).
In the 1931–1932 academic year he was Rector of Debrecen’s István Tisza University. During his rectorship, the Main Building of the University was completed and inaugurated, and the university took over the city’s public hospital for the purposes of training and practice. From 1936 through 1938 he represented the university in the upper house. In 1938 he was appointed principal professor of the clinic of dermatology of Budapest’s Péter Pázmány University, so he left Debrecen.

The data base offers a comprehensive register of the relevant facts and figures pertaining to the institution’s professors, assistant professors, instructors, research students, and assistants. In this first installment, the compiler has processed the data of the subordinate staff of the theoretical institutes.
János Bodnár as professor and chair of the Institute of Medical Chemistry taught not only the first year medical students but, as a subject lecturer– owing to the lack of faculty of natural sciences – at the faculty of humanities he also took part in natural sciences teacher training of the teacher candidates. In addition, he also o...ffered courses to those students who intended to obtain a doctoral degree.
In the academic year of 1943–44 he served as rector of the University of Debrecen, which was hard work because of the wartime climate and existence. In the following academic year, 1944 – 1945, he again took part in the management of the university as deputy rector since the newly appointed rector, János Hankiss got stuck in Budapest because of the war events. He concentrated on the temporary reconstruction of the war damages and he endeavoured to ensure the availability of the facilities of education.
IN WORLD WAR TWO THE UNIVERSITY OF DEBRECEN WAS SEVERELY DAMAGED BY A BOMB EXPLOSION: THE DIFFICULTIES OF RESTORING THE INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL CHEMISTRY – AN ACCOUNT BASED ON THE ASSESSMENT OF PROFESSOR JÁNOS BODNÁR, DIRECTOR OF THE INSTITUTE (NOVEMBER 1945). In World War Two, on September 15, 1944, a severe bom...bing hit struck the Institute of Medical Chemistry of the University of Debrecen, in György Magoss Square. About one-quarter part of the ediice was ruined and a large section of the roofage was destroyed. he source-material is provided by Professor János Bodnár, Director of the Institute, who in the academic year of 1944/1945 also served as acting rector. His submitted assessment, which bears the date of November 30, 1945, describes the diiculties of the restoration, including the long delays in the construction work. he study highlights the diiculties of renovation, as well as the problems of ensuring the basic facilities of education.
The decade after the Second World War was the heyday of nuclear research, as it became a field of great power rivalry. Sándor Szalay, head of the Institute of Experimental Physics at the University of Debrecen and head of the Institute of Nuclear Research at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, made good use of the situation and was able to empl...oy many good specialists, including some who had been pushed aside by the state authoroties of time. However, Ernő Zichy, a chemical engineer who had previously been punished by deportation, was not able to get a job at any of his institutes because of his aristocratic background.
