  • Lean Concept Implementation: Waste Reduction on Road Transport in Apparel Industry

    Logistics costs have become a concern for the Indonesian government, and in 2024, they accounted for 14% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Transportation costs are one of the elements of logistics costs. This condition has compelled leaders and teams in the apparel industry to allocate resources efficiently, effectively, and productively, with minimal waste. Based on this reason, the organization sought to identify the root causes of waste and implement improvements in transportation. These wastes of road transportation were identified and reduced by DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) method and lean tools, including Value Stream Map (VSM), Lean Metrics, Five Whys (5Ws), Transportation Overall Vehicle Effectiveness (TOVE) – Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), transport software, and SmartSheet. Data collection and observations were conducted in 2024 and 2025, resulting in improvements across various aspects, including a 75.75% reduction in parking time, a 4.67% decrease in distance traveled, an 82.66% decrease in vehicle utilization, and a 16.66% reduction in transportation costs. The Lean concept remains an effective tool for reducing waste.

     In today's world, the issue of sustainability has become a cardinal problem on a global scale. The question of sustainability affects society, health, the economy, and the environment to a large extent. The examination of the environmental aspects of sustainability at the points where the sports sector interacts with the environment is considered a basis for research, and an increasing number of international studies and literature deal with this topic. Sports equipment and sportswear manufacturers operate through high numbers of multi-level global supply chains. They constantly strive to meet sudden changes in consumer demand, which results in high demand for raw materials and resources, waste and greenhouse gas emissions, and water consumption, all of which contribute to the most harmful environmental effects.

    The aim of this study is to present the environmental protection measures of Nike, Adidas, and Under Armour, multinational manufacturers of sports equipment and sportswear, aimed at raw material usage, waste management, minimizing water consumption, and reducing their carbon footprint, which they are increasingly applying as part of their business strategy.

  • Production of Liquid Hydrocarbons from Plastic Wastes

    Thermal pyrolysis of HDPE, LDPE, PP and PS plastic wastes were performed in a batch reactor and the yields of pyrolysis oils and liquid transportation fuels prepared by atmospheric distillation were determined. The gasoline fractions were tested in a traditional spark-ignition engine without any modifications or fuel blending. Fuel consumption and exhaust gas emission (NOx, CO) were measured and compared to a commercial fuel (RON = 95). PS generated 70.5% gasoline range hydrocarbons from the solid waste, followed by PP with 42.1%, LDPE with 40.8% and HDPE with 37.3%. The fuel consumption was reduced by 9.1-9.4% in the case of PS compared to reference measurement. Reduction in fuel consumption was noticeable at HDPE, LDPE and PP as well. PS gasoline decreased by 91-96%, while HDPE, LDPE and PP more likely increased the CO emission of the engine compared to commercial gasoline. The results show that pyrolysis of plastic wastes is a promising method to generate value added liquid transportation fuels and reduce the footprint of waste accumulation in landfills.

    Global energy demand is constantly increasing, so the energy sources we use, and the efficiency of energy use are of paramount importance for the future of humanity. Methanol can play a key role in the sustainable use of natural resources, in the efficient and smooth transition from a fossil oil-based energy system as well as in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Long-term thinking will result in an increase in the use of renewable energy sources, which will favour the spread of green methanol technology and thus the use of a carbon-neutral fuel. The raw materials for the production of green methanol may include municipal solid waste, agricultural waste, renewable hydrogen and carbon dioxide and the methanol has many uses, both as fuel and chemical feedstock. It also provides an opportunity to chemically store excess renewable energy from intermittent sources, thereby reducing dependence on fossil fuels. The price of electricity used for electrolysis is the main determinant of the economical production of green methanol, so the reduction of the cost of solar and wind energy greatly contributes to the competitiveness of carbon-based production.

    The VízTEC Ltd. and Debrecen Waterworks Co.’s management mutually expressed their intention, that to designate a period of research examining the Debrecen Waste Water Treatment Plant’s (WWTP) intensification. During this period, the newly developed product, VIRON Plus 40 coagulating agent will be tested provided by the VízTEC Ltd. The aim of using the VIRON Plus 40 coagulating agent is the examination of intensification opportunities of Debrecen WWTP. The functions of the new generation of coagulants go beyond inorganic phosphorus precipitation and are growing. A modern WWTP is not only clean the water but also produces energy and usable sludge product. The appropriate energy balance, cost efficiency and carbon dioxide emissions reduction get increasing emphasis in WWTP’ operations.
