In my study, I discuss the circumstances of the deportation of the Jews of Berettyóújfalu. The post-deportation period is even less-processed than the deportation itself, so I relied on subsequent recollections and universal evidence. First, the gathering of rural Jewry began in April 1944 in Hungary. It was then that the register of Jews from Berettyóújfalu who were later deported began to be compiled. A gendarmerie led the local Jewish population on foot to the brick factory collection point, from where they were transported by train to the small ghetto in Oradea at noon on June 7, 1944. Their luggage was transported in cars and carts. On June 26, 1944, the last transport from Oradea deported the Jewish inhabitants of Berettyóújfalu to Auschwitz. Most of the Jews of Berettyóújfalu (654 people) who died during the crisis died in Auschwitz.

This study is intended to present the biggest challenge in the history of Berettyóújfalu in the 20th century: the period of the settlement's transformation into a county seat after 1920. As a result of the catastrophic Trianon peace treaty for Hungary, a decisive part of Bihar County, including its ancient seat in Oradea, was annexed to Romania. Berettyóújfalu could then play a leading role in the recovery of the remaining Csonka-Bihar. The town, which cherished ambitions to become a city since the beginning of the period of dualism, achieved its goal, even if not in accordance with the original idea: although it remained a town in its status, mainly due to a forced trajectory due to a tragedy, it could become the centre of 61 settlements in the remaining Bihar County. The eight years immediately following the change of empire are presented, 1920–1928, which counted as the most eventful period in the history of the county centre, starting from the loss of Bihar through the reorganization of public administration to the handover of the public hospital.

After the revolutions and the Trianon Peace Treaty, political life in Hungary continued to face several challenges. This study presents the political atmosphere that resulted the 1922 National Assembly election and its results. Berettyóújfalu was one of the constituencies affected by the new national border. Lajos Szilágyi applied for a mandate as a representative here. He was considered by the public of the time to be an active opposition politician. The United Party, led by István Bethlen and István Nagyatádi Szabó, also entered the fight for representative mandates. The ruling party exerted a lot of power to get its own candidates a mandate, as well as to obstruct the campaign of opposition politicians. This thesis seeks the answer to the question of how the campaign of the United Party took place in the electoral district of Berettyóújfalu, and how this series of events fits into the national election preparations of the governing party

The elaborations of the history of rural Jewry in general can be claimed to be clearly defined by the Holocaust. The property and partly legal retaliation of the pre-Soa period, followed by the return, resumption, and disappearance of the surviving Jewry from the rural society, is usually only briefly mentioned in the works written about it, as an aftertaste of the events of the emergency. In this study, I present these less researched resources of the disappearance of the Jews from Berettyóújfalu, comparing it with another Hajdú-Bihar county town, Hajdúnánás. At the end of the war, a small number of local Jews returned home deprived of their families. A few tried to restart their lives in Berettyóújfalu, but there were others who never returned to their birthplace. Some of them tried to reorganize their lives in the land of their ancestors, then called Palestine, later Israel. In my study, I am talking about the vicissitudes of those who stayed for a while in the hope of a new beginning, but later, having experienced the communist dictatorship, left.

The historian profession has, by now, clarified that the so-called Horthy-regime was an
authoritarian political structure where one-party dominance prevailed but other political
trends could also organize themselves with relative freedom.
One of the most interesting feature of this system was the operation of the limited
parliamentary system, which was provided by the suffrage between 1922 and 1938.
Until 1938/39, all constituencies of Bihar county voted openly, just like in the county
seat town, Berettyóújfalu. The secret ballot was restored in 1938 (1938th XIX. Tc.) and
the last election of the era was held based on this in May 1939. Primarily due to the
open voting, Bihar was considered a ruling party side county, although during the
1930’s, some opposition political movements such as the support of Smallholders and
the far-right (Nazi) party were also in rise here, just like in many other counties of the
    Great Plain region.

Reviewing the history of Hungarian parliamentary and national assembly election processes reveals numerous regional differences in the development of political life; different experiences shaped public affairs in cities and the countryside, which are less apparent at the macro level. This study aims to provide an overview of the Berettyóújfalu electoral district in Bihar County from the introduction of the popular representation system to the last election of the Horthy era, i.e., from 1848 to 1939. The main sources for this overview are the latest specialized literature, archival data, and contemporary press reports. This analysis describes the territorial changes of the electoral district, the evolution of the number of eligible voters, and the identity and party affiliations of the candidate representatives. These three aspects proved suitable for revealing patterns that also delineate new directions for research.

At the end of the 1990s, early 2000s, the Russian Federation handed over to Hungary a database of 66 281 entries: a database of some of the names of Hungarian prisoners of war and civilian interned people who had died in Soviet POW and internment camps. The database was written in Russian, with Cyrill letters, and was in an Excel format, in which the picture of a personal data sheet, the so-called ’ucsetnoje gyelo’ can be ordered to each name. On the occasion of the GULAG Memorial Year, the Museum of Military History compiled a database that is reachable also on the internet for those interested, and with the help of which one can learn the names of people as well as settlements, military corps, ranks, and Soviet POW camps without the need for the researcher to dig into the literature. The database contains information on 240 people born in the Districts of Berettyóújfalu and Derecske. Among those, the Hungarian records of loss contain data on only 53, the destiny of the others can be learned from the new database.

The Bihar Museum in Berettyóújfalu is the Bihar area’s regional museum with four decades of history. It opened in the former residence of the Fényes family in October 1974. In 2001, it moved to the Main Square, into the first floor of the former village hall. From 1 February 2016, it has been the member institution of the newly formed Berettyó Cultural Center. The museum performs research and collection work on Bihar’s history, ethnography, folklore and literary history. The temporary exhibition hall organizes 4-6 exhibitions in a year, partly based on its own collection, and partly from the works of local artists, objects of collectors, and partly by presenting traveling exhibitions. It also carries out a wide-ranging public education task, and it has several decades history in museum educational work. The implementation of its programs are helped by non-governmental organizations, local enterpretours and volunteers. On the Museum of the Year national competition, it was rewarded twice (2004, 2011) with the ministerial special prize; and on the Museums’ 2015 Picnic, the institute was awarded with the „Museum of the Year 2014” honourable title.

The 1956 material contained in the Oral History Collection of the Hajdú-Bihar County Archives of the Hungarian National Archives might become an important resource for the researchers of the topic. The collection does not contain topic interviews, but it tries to present the antecedent lives of the participants, their roles during the revolution, and the time periods afterwards via complete life course interviews. By the latter, that is, through the passion of people struck by retaliation, the life of lawsuits and prison life also comes alive. The number of the ’56 interviews contained in the collection is 38, which is more than half of the complete assortment of interviews. Of course, most interviews are connected to Debrecen (19 interviews), the second most related is Hajdúnánás (8 interviews), followed by Berettyóújfalu (3 interviews), and then the material of the individual county settlements with one interview each. The interviews were prepared by Tibor Valuch (27 interviews) and Zoltán Völgyesi (11 interviews) in the years after the change of regime. The ranking of interviews in the collection follows the order of the date of entry.

Defining the place of local and settlement history within the field of historical studies has been a topic of intense emotion and debate since the genre's inception. This paper focuses on the section of local history writing that deals with the early and late Middle Ages, as well as the processing of specialized sources related to this period. The study takes as its starting point a fundamental methodological study published almost half a century ago, and in comparison to it, seeks to present new trends and methods that have emerged in recent decades. In the spirit of interdisciplinarity, particular attention is given to the results of archaeological and natural sciences, which have highlighted the importance and indispensability of environmental history research. The experiences – and the still untapped opportunities in local historical research – are presented through the example of recent settlement history research conducted in the vicinity of Berettyóújfalu.
