  After the outbreak of the War of Independence, hallmarked by the name of Ferenc Rákóczi II, István Buday (bölsei), who served as the deputy granger of Bihar county between 1688 and 1701, was among the first rebels. In the Tokaj vineyard, he came to the neighbourhood of both Rákóczi and Miklós Bercsényi, establishing the base that provided a loyal and soldier for the revolution. István Buday climbed the ladder quickly: he became court captain, then chief of the Hajdú towns of Szabolcs, and later commander of the regiment of the Hajdú towns. The depths and heights that characterize the war of independence can also be traced in the military career of the former deputy granger. We can examine these in the framework of the present study. István Buday, who served in the War of Independence until his death, was the appropriate type of soldier of the time: he was an underqualified but experienced fortress warrior, participating in raids and smaller campaigns. This paper focuses on the eight years of the War of Independence, with special attention payed to the military career of the captain of the Hajdú towns.

  The studies about the historical role of the seven Szabolcsian Haiduck towns (Böszörmény, Nánás, Dorog, Szoboszló, Hadház, Vámospércs, Polgár) are mostly concentrated around the 17th century. Therefore, the Rákóczi War of Independence period still has a number of open questions in store for the researchers. The archontological data bank covers the eight years of the War of Independence, laying the foundation ofthe urban elite’s identification. While collecting the names of the officers, we used the current literature data in addition to city documents, but the creation of the comprehensive list – due to resource facility – still awaits and requires further studies. The Haiduck towns elected their officials on an annual basis. They served the settlementsfrom St. George’s Day (24th April) to St. George’s Day. The lieutenant was the leader of the city, and his work was helped by the minimum 12-member council, the town clerk, the street lieutenant and various supervisors. The current data bank is a good basis forfurther studies to present the urban elite.

  István Bölsei Buday, the former deputy of Bihar, joined Ferenc Rákóczi II immediately after the outbreak of Rákóczi’s War of Independence. The nearly 50-year-old man supported the future prince according to his best talent, and his wife, Erzsébet Melczer, also helped him in this. The research conducted in connection with Rákóczi’s War of Independence focuses more on questions of military, economic and social history. Micro-historical explorations have received more emphasis in recent decades, concentrating on groups and individuals who fell outside the scope of traditional research models. With the help of such an in depth analysis focusing on one person, we aim to bring the wife, mother, family member behind the soldier closer to the reader.
