Black poplar riparian forests (Carduo crispi-Populetum nigrae) along the river Drava
215–238Views:192The objective of this study is to analyse the phytosociological characteristics of riverside black poplar forests on the flood plain of the Drava River (southwestern Hungary) by means of 25 relevés. Based on the results of traditional analyses (vegetation structure and attributes of constituent species), their ecological niche and place in plant succession, those streamside forests can be identified with the plant association Carduo crispi-Populetum nigrae described from the Szigetköz region (northwestern Hungary). Stands of this association develop from purple willow scrubs (Rumici crispi-Salicetum purpureae), and are located at an elevation about one and a half meters lower than those of its successor vegetation unit, the white poplar association (Senecioni sarracenici-Populetum albae).

89-104Views:95The present study reports the occurrence data of 54 vascular plant taxa, collected at various localities in Hungary during floristic, vegetation and ecological field surveys between 2000 and 2013. In some cases, phytosociological relevés were prepared to characterize the local coenological properties of the species. Many of these species are included in the „Red list of the vascular flora of Hungary” (e.g. Carthamus lanatus, Sedum caespitosum, Spiranthes spiralis and Trifolium micranthum). Some of them (e.g. Apium repens, Dianthus diutinus, Epipactis bugacensis and Ranunculus psilostachys) are rarities in the whole country. Our findings suggest that conservationists should focus not only on the maintenance of semi-natural habitats but also on the investigation of secondary habitats (e.g. river embankments, temporary pools on arable fields) in order to maintain the total species diversity of the landscape.

Turkey oak forests on sand (Fraxino orno-Quercetum cerridis) in Vértesalja (Hunga-ry)
34–57Views:169Here we evaluate the phytosociological characteristics of the turkey oak forests on sand (Fraxino orno-Quercetum cerridis) found at the northern foothills of the Vértes Hills, Hungary. Using the traditional Braun-Blanquet method, 20 vegetation samples were collected and compared with turkey oak forests growing in similar ecological situations in other parts of the country. The traditional and multivariate analyses showed that our samples were quite different from the compared forests, and only the forests in the Bakonyalja and the Pilis Mts showed some similarity with the compared forests. Our samples had the lowest proportion of Quercetea pubescentis-petraeae species among the compared forests, and the highest proportion of specialists (Corydalis pumila, Daphne laureola, Doronicum hungaricum, Lychnis coronaria, Physocaulis nodosus, Primula veris, Scutellaria columnae, Sorbus domestica and Veratrum nigrum). The samples were well separated from the compared forests and formed a distinct group.
