Dávid Szőke, Ph.D. student, Comparative Literary Department, University of Szeged, Hungary, does research in the field of English, German, and Hungarian literatures, transculturalism, gender studies, and minority studies. His selection of Iris Murdoch’s letters to her former doctoral student, the Hungarian Simone Weil scholar, Miklós Vető, appeared with his foreword in the Iris Murdoch Review (9 [2018]), which opened new ways of understanding her early philosophical interests and her correspondence with refugees from the Eastern bloc. He co-organized the “International Holocaust Conference: Silence, Speech, Memory, Message, Understanding: After 75 Years” as a joint project of the universities of Halle and Sheffield, held at the University of Halle in 2019. His current research investigates the influence of the German- Jewish exile literature on Iris Murdoch’s early novels, with a special focus on the Holocaust, post-war trauma, the European memory culture, and comingto terms with the past.
