  Varga Zoltán történész professzor igen ellentmondásos időszakban töltötte be a Kossuth Lajos Tudományegyetem rektori tisztségét. A nagypolitikában már Magyarországon is érződött a Sztálin halála után a Szovjetunióban bekövetkezett enyhülés hatása, a hazai kommunista vezetés ragaszkodása a hatalomhoz azonban megakadályozta az érdemi változtatásokat. Az egyetemi szervek reform javaslatai sorra leperegtek a politikai vezetésről. Az oktatók és hallgatók így Debrecenben vezető szerepet vállaltak az 1956. októberi forradalom helyi eseményeiben. Varga Zoltán rektor – akit a forradalmi vezetés leváltott pozíciójából – a forradalom leverése után, tisztségébe visszatérve, sokat tett kollégáinak és hallgatóinak a megtorlásoktól való mentésében. Betegsége miatt azonban még 1957 tavaszán lemondott tisztségéről.

  Kádár László 1947-től nyugdíjba vonulásáig (1978) az egyetem professzoraként működött. Időközben a Bölcsészettudományi Kar prodékánja, 1952–1954 között a Természettudományi Kar dékánja, majd 1954/55-ben az egyetem rektora volt. Egyetemi oktatói karrierjét gazdagodó tudományos eredményei és kiváló tanári talentuma mellett főleg széles látókörű, szaktudományából messze kitekintő szellemiségének és rendkívül energikus, határozott impulzív alkatának, kiváló vitakészségének köszönhette. Jó kapcsolatokat ápolt az intézeti és az egyetemi munkatársakkal.

  A Kossuth Lajos Tudományegyetem két kara, a Bölcsészettudományi Kar és a Természettudományi Kar, valamint az ún. központi egységek 1950. január 1. és 1990. december 31. közötti archontológiáját a Rektori
  Hivatal személyi kartotékjai és anyagai, valamint a kevésbé dokumentált ’50-es évek tekintetében kiegészítőleg a Személyzeti Osztály éves kimutatásai alapján készült. Ennek ellenére a rendelkezésünkre álló

  Bognár Rezső a budapesti József Nádor Műszaki és Gazdaságtudományi Egyetemen szerezte diplomáját és Zemplén Géza mellett dolgozott 1950-ig a műegyetemi Szerves Kémiai Intézetben. 35 éves korában már a Magyar Tudományos Akadémia levelező tagja. Már akadémikusként kerül Debrecenbe, aholis az Egyetem éppen alakuló Természettudományi Karának Szerves Kémiai Intézetét szervezte meg. A debreceni négy évtizedes működése messze túlterjedt az intézet falain, hiszen kétízben is, összesen öt tanéven keresztül az egyetem rektora, és ugyancsak két ízben hét tanévben rektorhelyettese volt.Különösen jelentős szerepe volt abban, hogy a Debreceni Akadémiai Bizottság 1976-ban megkezdhette működését és székháza épült Debrecenben.

  Országh László  professzor kézjegye mindmáig érezhető az anglisztika és az amerikanisztika számos ágazatán. Senki sem tud megtanulni angolul az ő kétnyelvű szótára nélkül, amely az Akadémiai Kiadó valóságos bestsellere lett; 437 oldalas monográfiája, Az amerikai irodalom története (1967) mindmáig használatos; a Hungarian Studies in English című évente kiadott folyóirat pedig, amelyet ő alapított 1963-ban és szerkesztett tíz éven át, az egyetem egyik fő exportcikke lett, mely folyamatosan tájékoztatta a nemzetközi tudományos közösséget a Kossuth Lajos Tudományegyetemen zaljó anglisztikai és amerikanisztikai kutatómunka állásáról és minőségéről. Végrendeletében Országh professzor az egyetemre hagyományozta hatalmas könyvtárát: azóta az "Országh-gyűjtemény" mind a hallgatóknak, mind a kutatóknak a rendelkezésére áll. Országh professzor egyik legfontosabb öröksége azonban az az emberi tartás és tudósi példa, amelyet hallgatói elé állított.

  Orange-Yellow Tulips. The History of Dutch Studies at the University of Debrecen. Teaching of Dutch started at Lajos Kossuth University (which later became the University of Debrecen) with a group of five students in 1991. At that time, Dutch was offered as a second Germanic language to students of German only. Currently, there are four different types of study programmes at the independent Department of Dutch Studies, with more than 90 students altogether. The popularity of Dutch Studies is partially a result
  of the excellent opportunities in the labour market for candidates speaking Dutch.

  rezső bognár, Professor of organic cheMistry, MeMber of the hungarian acadeMy of arts and sciences, scientific adviser. Rezső Bognár was one of the most outstanding students of Géza Zemplén, the irst great educator of organic chemistry in Hungary. When the School of Sciences was established in 1949 at the University of Debrecen, Professor Bognár was appointed head of the Department of Organic Chemistry. As a result of this decision, he became the founding father of organic chemistry work in Debrecen. He
  was soon elected member of the Hungarian Academy of Arts and Sciences and he served for two terms as Rector of Lajos Kossuth University of Arts and Sciences. Professor Bognár was founding president of the Debrecen Academic Committee, which position he held until his death. It was as the result of his nationally recognized public activity that the headquarters in Debrecen of DAB (=the Debrecen Academic Committee) and the Chemistry Building on the Debrecen campus were erected. He also organized the Antibio tic Chemical Research Group of the Hungarian Academy. he researchers of the Bognár school have brought out over 400 scientiic publications and submitted a large number of patents pertaining to the themes of the chemistry of carbohydrates, antibiotics, alkaloids, and lavonoids.His activities in the Hungarian National Assembly and the Hungarian Academy of Arts and Sciences have greatly contributed to the numerous successes of our university.
