Abstract
This study examines the rectorship of Béla Jausz within the political and institutional context of the late 1950s. The analysis reveals that Jausz embodied a transitional role between traditional bourgeois academic values and the emerging state-socialist higher education policy. His tenure was marked by partial efforts to restore institutional structures and academic traditions, while simultaneously reflecting the increasing restriction of university autonomy and the strengthening of centralised political control. The paper interprets Jausz’s leadership as both a stabilising force in the post-1956 consolidation period and a facilitating element in the gradual establishment of a centralised system of higher education governance.
