  the Centenary of the Birth of János Arany and the War. The Message of the Memorial Society from Nagyszalonta to the University of Debrecen about the Cancellation of the Ceremony. One hundred years ago and one hundred years after the birth of Arany the memorial society prepared for a nationwide celebration in Nagyszalonta. They sent their official invitation to every literary and scholarly society, with the University of Debrecen among them. Nándor Láng, who was the Rector of the university in the 1916/17. academic year gave the mandate to Károly Pap to attend the ceremony and represent the university. Károly Pap, who was the dean of the faculty of arts, accepted this with pleasure because he was a researcher of the poetry of Arany. But the ceremony was postponed because the train service became unreliable due to the war. The nationwide ceremony had to be cancelled because of the bad traffic conditions and it was never held in Nagyszalonta in 1917. This printed media sources inform us about this and the effect of the Great War on the centenary of the birth of János Arany.

  A Debreceni Egyetem Böszörményi úti kampuszán 2020 októberében avatták fel az 1919-ben elhunyt Kozma András professzor mellszobrát. Az ünnepségen a Gazdaságtudományi Kar dékánja emlékezett meg a nagy hatású, országos jelentőségű egyetemi tanár munkásságáról.

  GÉZA KISS, THE RECTOR STRICKEN WITH ”DAMNATIO MEMORIAE”. Géza Kiss, a jurist, was elevated to the position of rector at the University of Debrecen when he was 36, which is an exceedingly tender age for such an honour. his internationally recognized expert of Roman law made an extraordinarily fast career when he was transferred from the academy of law at Nagyvárad to the Department of Roman Law, University of Debrecen, at the beginning of the academic year in 1914. In the academic year of 1915/1916 he was Dean of the Faculty of Law, and in 1918 he was elected Rector of the University. It was due to the events involving his activities as rector that the career of the young professor and scholar was ruined and, as a result, he was divested of his oice and even his memory was struck of the annals of the university. Not until the beginning of the 2000s was his portrait reestablished in the university rectors’ gallery.

  Professor of History, István Rugonfalvi Kiss served as Rector Magnificus of the Hungarian Royal István Tisza University of Debrecen in the academic year of 1932-1933. A historian of Székely origin, he first served as the local archivist of the Baron Radvánszky family estate, then he acquired a growing reputation as the chief archivists of Győr County. Starting in 1911, he became college professor of history at the Arts Academy of the Debrecen Protestant College, then from 1914 until his retirement in 1942 he served as professor of Hungarian history of the newly established University of Debrecen. He served as dean several times and he was appointed Rector of the University in the academic year of 1932-1933. In historical scholarship he represented the conservative alternative, thus he was violently opposed to Gyula Szekfű’s view of history. He is the author of work on the last Hungarian uprising of noblemen as well as on the history of the Székely people. After the the Second World War, owing to his previous political activism, he was imprisoned and subsequently he lived in the circle of his family, isolated from professional activity.

  Az írás a Debreceni Egyetem ma is használt jelképeinek történetére pillant vissza, hangsúlyozva, hogy az egyetemi karokat jelképező gerundium csúcsdíszek, valamint a rektori, dékáni láncok és medálok több mint 100 esztendeje készültek az első világháborúban hadizsákmányként szerzett ágyúk bronzából, emlékeztetve arra, hogy az egyetem több hallgatója és oktatója is harcolt a haza védelmében és áldozta életét.

  The Life and Work of Pál Szarvas, Professor of Chemistry. At the University of Debrecen, the Faculty of Science was founded in 1949. The management boards of the new Faculty and of the University spared no effort to bring prominent scientists as leading members of the newly organized science departments. In this manner, Pál Szarvas was also invited in 1951 to come to Debrecen to be the Head of the Department of Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry. His first task here was to organize the furnishing and equipment of the student and research laboratories, to initiate classroom teaching and research work despite the rather unfavourable financial conditions. From 1952 on the number of staff members began to increase and from the mid-1960s the level of the laboratory equipment was also improving. Research work was launched in the field of analytical chemistry, where various methods were developed for the determination of some rare metals in the presence of larger amounts of other elements. From the end of the 1960s the main research field of the Department was solution chemistry, the equilibrium and kinetic studies on the formation of complexes of transition metals and lanthanides with organic ligands. Another developing field was the synthesis and study of new boron-organic compounds. The focus of research in analytical chemistry shifted to the use of emission spectrography and atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Professor Szarvas was also involved in the leadership of the Faculty and of the University. He was Dean of the Faculty (1954–58) and the Rector of the University (1963–66). His activity was highly important in the preparation of the construction of the chemistry building. Professor Szarvas, who retired in 1975, played a significant role in the organization of the teaching and research work of the Department of Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry, which has exerted an important impact on the current existence and successes of the Department.

  A Debreceni Egyetem Orvosi Vegytani Intézete 2021-ben ünnepelte megalakulásának 100. évfordulóját. Verzár Frigyes, az orvosi kar dékánja 1921. december 15-javasolta a Kari Tanácsnak egy "Kémiai Tanszék" megalapítását. Bár a Tanács csak 1922-ben hagyta jóvá ezt a javaslatot, a Tanszéket visszamenőlegesen, 1921-es alapítási dátummal hozták létre. Az intézet arculatának alakításában négy professzor (Bodnár János, Straub János, Bot György és Gergely Pál) játszott meghatározó szerepet, akik hosszabb ideig látták el az igazgatói feladatokat. Nekik köszönhető az a folyamatos fejlődés, melynek során az intézet egyrészt orvostanhallgatók generációinak oktatta a kémia alapjait, a biokémiát és a molekuláris biológiát meglapozó ismereteket, másrészt úttörő szerepet játszott az orvostudományban mélyen gyökerező kérdésekre fókuszáló, biokémia-orientált kutatásokban is.
