  • Coping Strategies of Elite Hungarian Junior Handball Players

    Several studies provided instruments, with the possibility to measure self-assessment and coping strategies. This study aimed to study differences in coping strategies by age groups and gender in handball players. For psychological profile the Athletic Coping Skills Inventory (ACSI-28) was applied, at elite Hungarian junior handball teams (n=288) in 2016-2017. On the scales Coping with Adversity and Freedom From worry males acquired significantly higher average values, females showed higher mean values of Goal Setting / Mental Preparation and Coachability. On Freedom from Worry, the oldest players performed the best, Coachability was highest in the youngest group. High values of Concentration were measured by playmakers, which was significantly higher than that of other offensive roles. With the results of our study, we would like to draw attention to the fact that for successful preparation, the knowledge of the athlete's coping skills and their self-knowledge are in dispensable.

    The relationship between well-being and adaptive-convergent and exaptive-divergent thinking during the coronavirus pandemic: In our paper we investigate whether there is a relationship between well-being and adaptive-convergent and exaptive-divergent thinking. In other words, the central question of our paper is to what extent different coping strategies, borrowed from evolutionary biology, influence the level of subjective well-being during the coronavirus pandemic. For the empirical examination of our question, we used a data collection of 1,000 people, representing the Hungarian population over 18 years of age. To examine the relationships between the factors under investigation, we built four regression models. Our results show that well-being is enhanced by both adaptive-convergent (logical, systematic) and exaptive-divergent (creative, innovative) thinking. This relationship is valid even when the effects of the coronavirus epidemic on well-being are excluded, and divergent thinking also helps to make people less affected by the pandemic.

    The research investigates how parental socioeconomic background (level of education, financial situation, labor market activity and the type of settlement) affects the preschooler’s coping skills in social conflicts. The focus is on the most effective coping strategies in kindergarten: negotiation and seeking help from an adult and the inadaptive one: physical aggression. We obtained measures on Coping Mechanism Questionnaire both from the teachers and children, and 306 parents answered the questionnaire about home environment. Regression analyses was applied to find out if there are independent variables with an explanatory role. According to our findings, SES has its relevance in the development of social coping mechanisms. Educational achievement and the activity of parents on the labour-market have been proved to have a moderator role in formation of coping skills among other demographic and psychosocial factors. Children with a more favorable social background cope more effectively.
