Insuperable Language Inequalities? A Reflecting Study on Bernstein's Linguistic Codes Theory and its Critique
Views:89Kindergarten education is compulsory in Hungary, and the National Basic Programme for Kindergarten Education foresees effective language activities. This is in line with what Bernstein has proposed to address language inequalities. The research question is whether linguistic differences can be observed among kindergarten students in Hungary based on the socio-economic situation of the place of residence. The investigated settlement categories according to Government Decree 105/2015. (IV. 23.), and the Central Statistical Office data were the following: disadvantaged, less disadvantaged and advantaged (N=39). The speech of kindergarteners was examined using three playful tests, which were analyzed applying dimensions and indicators determined by reviewing the literature written by Bernstein, his followers, and critics, and a pilot study. During the analysis, the underperformance of the disadvantaged settlement’s children was detected in several scales, sometimes spectacularly (adjectives, word count, sentence coherence in the first test, noun-verb relationship), sometimes only to a lesser extent (the use of conjunctions, extended sentences, personal pronouns). Overall, the results support that Bernstein’s theory created two generations ago are still valid today: language inequalities can still be experienced in terms of the settlement disadvantages. The research draws attention to the need to increase the efficiency of mother tongue development in kindergartens.

The Bodily Experiences of Music Teachers
53-59Views:228This paper deals with the specifics of a music teacher's work in kindergarten and presents an empirical study, based on the approach of hermeneutic phenomenology. In the research outcomes, the experiences of the music teacher's work in kindergarten are presented through their stories about memorable moments of their professional activity. Initially, in accordance with the theory of Max van Manen, the research data were viewed through the prism of five dimensions (lived time, lived space, lived self-others, lived things, and lived body), typical of all phenomena. The paper discusses one of them, i.e. the teachers' experience from the perspective of the lived body. The stories demonstrate how through the looks, facial mimicry, and body language, moments of the teacher's everyday routine are revealed that would otherwise be overlooked or considered irrelevant.

College Begins in Kindergarten: A Path to Higher Education Through Family-School Partnerships in a K-5 School
1-12.Views:330As income inequality rises in the United States, students from low-income backgrounds and other excluded identities are likelier to remain in the lower income percentile, especially if they do not have college degrees (Kochhar & Cilluffo, 2018). Therefore, a critical approach is to focus on what happens before middle and high school, realizing that early childhood is prime for students to learn about college and their future. This study explored the practices influencing college-going aspirations for marginalized students in a K-5 school that engages teachers and families. The exploration extends the literature on how schools prepare elementary-aged students to develop college-going aspirations. The case study design collected data from observations, an administrative interview, and a document review. Findings revealed social and environmental practices influencing students and families regarding college-going attitudes and aspirations. The results have implications for curriculum and school culture to redefine the postsecondary conversation.

The Impact of Sport on the Health Related Quality of Life of Primary School Children
80-85Views:544By participating in some organized physical activities, even at school or in a sports association, children will have an impact on their intellectual, emotional and socialization abilities, as well as develop their motor skills and abilities. As a result, an athlete’s health will also be at a higher level and their Healthrelated quality of life (HRQOL) will change. In the survey, we were researching if there is a difference in the results of the HRQOL dimensions of lower-grade athletes and non-athletes at Ferenc Gál University’s Szarvasi Training Primary School and Training Kindergarten. In the cross-sectional study, 89 parents responded to questions in the Kidscreen-27 / proxy questionnaire, which asked about their child’s subjective quality of life and its relationship with sports. Based on the statistically processed data, it can be shown that young athletes have higher HRQOL values compared to their non-athlete counterparts in all dimensions. From this, we can conclude that sport has a positive impact on the health and well-being of athlete students, their relationships with family and friends, and their effectiveness at school.
