    MAB is an organization established for the external evaluation of the quality of Hungarian higher education institutions and their study programmes. It was established temporarily in November 1992, with legal definition in 1994. This paper is a concise chronicle of MAB's 30-year history. It attempts to provide only a few, but perhaps not insignificant, pieces of the mosaic for these 30 years, from the antecedents of the foundation, certain characteristics of the organization and operation, to the international and domestic embeddedness, to the question of MAB's place in Hungarian higher education. After presenting the beginnings, the primary organizing principle of the text is thematic, the historical thread appears within the topics.

  • The HUNGARIAN AND TRANSYLVANIAN PUPILS OF THE INSTITUTIONS OF THE FRANCKESCHE STIFTUNGEN IN HALLE

    Halle’s appeal in the 18th century was due not only to its university, but also to the institutions of the Francke Foundations. The so-called “orphanage” was originally intended to take care of children, but it was successively expanded into schools at different levels. Two inventions made Halle attractive: the free canteen and the fact that orphanage schools employed university students as teachers and provided training for them. The orphanage thus had access to a large and cheap teaching staff, and the informants gained experience as well as being able to finance their university studies. It was therefore a place where talent and diligence could flourish. These social and pedagogical measures contributed greatly to the rise of the University of Halle. When the institutional system was fully developed and the written evaluation of informants became systematic, informative files were also produced on people who later played a decisive role in the history of schooling in Hungary and Transylvania.

    The Student Community of Debrecen’s School of Medicine (1921–1949). In view of the fact that the University of Debrecen grew out of the academic divisions of the Protestant College, the Protestant character of the state university can be easily demonstrated as present. What can be equally well seen are the facts that, one, the members of the student community tended to come from Debrecen or the larger Debrecen region, and, two, that Hungarian was the almost exclusively used mother tongue. As regards social distribution, the most frequent origins are from the intellectual and the smallholder class. A look at student support shows that until the beginning of the 1930s a smaller portion of the student body, whereas after this time frame 60 to 70 percent, received some kind of financial support. Student aid and reward could come from various sources: (a) from the university itself; (b) from the Ministry of Education; (c) the city of Debrecen; (d) private sources; (e) financial institutions and associations; and (f ) from the Protestant church. Unfortunately, the amount of these aids was rather limited and only a few students could be recipients. Student subventions in the post-1945 era was based on totally new priorities, however, its objectives were marred at first by runaway inflation, then class-struggle principles impacted on it by creating discriminative categories. Student accommodation, owing to the scarcity of reliable data can only be shown in an incomplete table; no creditable evaluation of these is possible.
