About

The state university existence has begun in 1912 in Debrecen. With the approaching of its centenary the Centennial Committee was established and since 2007 a Steering Committee manages directly the organization of the worthy commemoration of the centenary. It was during this activity when it became clear that despite of the existing excellent historical works there are a lot of gaps in the processing of the hundred years and also the earlier eras. This also applies for other national and European institutions as well. Therefore it seemed worthwhile to establish a journal that provides space for university historical data, information and research results. In 2009 this lead to the founder’s decision that the University of Debrecen creates the Gerundium University History Publications Journal.

THE GOALS OF OUR JOURNAL

1. The journal intends to support the interdisciplinary cooperation between the educators’ and researchers’ of the University (and other institutions of higher education and research organizations) and the co-working between the society and representatives of natural sciences while revealing the history of the University of Debrecen, underlining that the university idea is based on the historically integrated social and cultural system of education and science. The University of Debrecen is a prominent part of this idea in Hungary and Europe. An important goal is furthermore providing such an opportunity for our students and young educators to publish their research, which meets even the highest scientific demands and their support their academic career.

2. At the same time the journal doesn’t wish to examine the history of the University of Debrecen in isolation, but also wishes to provide a forum for the presentation of the connections between the history of education and science in Hungary, the Carpathian Basin and Europe without age-limits. With this, the journal also intends to undertake the mission of giving the opportunity of periodic publication to the results of an interdisciplinary research field that has not yet had an independent scientific journal in Hungary, despite the fact that the history of education and science in all disciplines has achieved extremely important results in recent decades. Hopefully the journal may become one of the central sources of future Hungarian university history research in the next years.

3. In light of the above we would like to offer our modest opportunities for all Hungarian and non-Hungarian researchers in Hungary and abroad, who wish to present studies, shorter commented sources and data repositories in the field of the history of higher education in a broader sense to the professionals and non-professionals. We would like our journal to be characterized by open-mindness regarding time, space and methodology under the professional supervision of the most prestigious actors in the Hungarian history of higher education.
