    BÉLA SASS REKTOR. His father was a Reformist priest in Albis, Bihar County and the padre of General József Nagysándor in 1848–49. After inishing his theology studies, he worked as a religion teacher at the Debrecen Grammar school for a short period of time. From 1890, he was a teacher of Old Testament readings at the heology Academy of the Debrecen Reformist College. Between 1895–98 he was the Director of the Academy. At the recently established University of Debrecen he worked as the professor of Old Testament readings and related studies from 1914 until his death. Within this time period, he was the Dean of the Faculty of Reformist heology in 1915–16 and in 1926–27, and the Rector in 1921–22. He published numerous essays in relation to the Old Testament and to the history of the Reformist church and wrote philosophy books, as well.

    JÓZSEF POKOLY REKTOR. After inishing theology studies, he was the tutor of Count Lajos Tisza (son of Prime Minister Kálmán Tisza) in Geszten, then he was a Reformist priest for a year. He was the teacher of church history at the Reformist heology Academy in Kolozsvár from 1895, and at the heology Academy of the Debrecen Reformist College from 1912. At the University of Debrecen, established in 1914, he became the professor of ancient history at the Faculty of Arts from 1918 on. Between 1922 and 1930, until his retirement, he was the teacher of church history at the Faculty of Reformist heology. During the academic year of 1920–21 he was the Rector of the University. Until his retirement, he was the President of the István Tisza Scientiic Society and he also worked as a senate member of the University. His worked centered around Reformist church history and the history of Hungarian Protestantism in 16–17th centuries.

    INFLUENCE OF DUTCH UNIVERSITIES ON THE CULTURAL HISTORY OF MEDICINE IN THE 17TH AND 18TH CENTURIES. 97 students are known who were registered as a student of medicine at Dutch universities in the Early Modern Age. he basic subjects of medical training, botany and anatomy, were met by the universities and clinical education was also introduced. Hungarian students disputed and defended doctoral theses in the Netherlands under inluence of the newest philosophical and medical theories. After having inished their medical training abroad, they became doctors of towns and provinces in their home country. Some of them continued writing scientiic works or translated works of famous European doctors. he work of the most inluential Dutch medical doctor, Hermann Boerhaave was continued by his students in Vienna and Hungary, too. His name also appeared in literary works of the 18th century.

    SOURCES AND METHODS FOR PROCESSING STUDENT LISTS OF THE DEBRECEN REFORMIST COLLEGE. In commemoration of the 475th anniversary of the existence of the Debrecen Reformist College a long expected, two volume resource guide was published in 2013 under the title „History sources of the institution int he archive of the Debrecen Reformist College.” It contains student lists between 1588 and 1850 cataloguing 20 000 registrations. his essay summarizes the history of this research and lists the sources used in the process.

    THE RESTART OF THE DEBRECEN SUMMER SCHOOL IN 1947. he essay recalls the process of restarting the Debrecen Summer School after WWII, which operated continously even during the war, and the history of the irst courses organized on the basis of the previous structure. he author describes in detail the heroic struggle of numerous professors in Debrecen, primarily János Hankiss, aiming at reviving the Summer School and putting together the necessary funds for it. he essay elaborates on the obstructive factors and barriers rising immediately after the war and contributing to the complete disintegration of the school.

    PHILOSOPHY AND WORLDVIEW INT HE LIFEWORK OF BÉLA TANKÓ: THOUGHTS ON HIS WORK TITLED „IN TERMS OF AUTONOMOUS PHILOSOPHY: BÉLA TANKÓ REVIVED”. he work „In terms of autonomous philosophy: Béla Tankó revived” – published in 2012 and edited by László Gáspár and Tamás Valastyán – ofers an insight into the lifework of Béla Tankó (1876–1946), a Professor from Debrecen and a signiicant representative of Hungarian neo-kantianist philosophy. His work was determined by three thematic directions: (1) the theoretical consummation of philosophy, (2) its pedagogical applicability, and (3) the problem of protestantism’s social situation. hese three key issues gain equal emphasis in the work relecting the harmonic relationship of these subjects in Béla Tankó’s lifework. he essay evaluates the philosophic work of Béla Tankó and tries to situate it in the philosophic discourse of the time.

    THE DOCTORAL STUDIES OF THEOLOGY STUDENTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF DEBRECEN UNTIL 1949. Based on the minutes of the doctoral culminative exams at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Debrecen before 1949, the essay comes to the conclusion that numerous doctoral students in the Faculty of Arts between 1917–1949 completed their studies as students of the Faculty of heology. It has been proven that it is not only a unique practice in Debrecen, but it is a continuation of an established practice in Kolozsvár. he author decsribes the practice in Kolozsvár and how it was adapted at the University of Debrecen. Based on some memoirs, the author shows that numerous signiicant representatives of Pedagogy started their careers as students of Theology.

    THE INVOLVMENT OF MEDICAL FACULTY OF THE TISZA ISTVÁN UNIVERSITY IN THE ORGANIZATION OF MEDICAL COURSES FOR PALADINS – THE SUGGESTION OF PROFESSOR ENDRE JENEY FROM 1937. At the end of 1936 Elemér Vargha, Deputy Mayor of Debrecen, who was the city representative of the Hungarian Red Cross, contacted first the Faculty of Medicine of the Tisza István University to teach medical courses for paladins. Endre Jeney, the professor of economics prepared a detailed plan for two diferent age groups for 12–12 course periods. he detailed plan includes the description of course subjects, provides the schedule, the names of teachers and nurses. At the end, the course was not realized.

    FOUNDATION FROM THE 20TH CENTURY: THE MEMORANDUM OF GÁRDOS JÁNOS FOUNDATION FOR STUDENT CATERING. At the end of the 19 th century, Mrs. János Gárdos – born as Júlia Andrássy, and died on February 26, 1894, – the widower of Dr. János Gárdos, a doctor from Budapest, ofered a signiicant donation in her last will for the future establishment of the dining commons of the third university founded by the state. Following the foundation of the universities in Budapest and Kolozsvar, two universities were being organized in 1912, thus the inancies dedicated to the third university was divided between the universities in Debrecen and Pozsony (later the one in Pécs). he author demonstrates, besides the publication of the official founding document from 1934, the important role of the Gárdos János foundation played in the dining of the university students in the irst two decades of the existence of the university.

    THE ARCHONTOLOGY OF THE KOSSUTH UNIVERSITY III.: INSTITUTE OF HUNGARIAN LITERATURE AND LINGUISTICS (1950–1990). he archontology of the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Natural Scienences, and of the so called central units of the University of Debrecen between January 1, 1950 – December 31, 1990 was written based on the personal data from the Rector’s Oice supplemented by the documents of the Department of Administration concerning the less documented 50s. he existing documentation is not full, therefore the archontolgy cannot really be compiled with a 100% accuracy. he third part provided the complete list of the teachers and staf of the Institute of Hungarian Literature and Linguistics including everybody from Head of the Institute to the oice administratiors.

    HÜTTL TIVADAR (1884–1955), PROFESSOR SURGEON, FOUNDER OF A SCHOOL AND CLINIC IN DEBRECEN. After inishing his studies, Tivadar Hüttl worked in the Institute of Pathology at the Budapest University besides Professor Antal Genersich, later int he Clinic of Surgery besides Professor Tibor Verebély. From 1921 he worked as Deputy director of the forming Faculty of Medicine at the Tisza István University in Debrecen, in 1922 he was appointed as the full professor of Surgery and the Director of the Clinic of Surgery. During his leadership he established several departments which became clinics later on. He created a truly scientiic school environment, professors, hospital directors became his students. In the academic year of 1930–40 he was the Rector of the university. He was wrongfully accused in 1945 and he was divested of his professor title. Later he worked as the head physician of the State Institute of Oncology.

    THE PERSONALITY AND STAMINA OF KÁROLY PAP, PROFESSOR OF LITERATURE IN THE EYES OF HIS STUDENTS. he essay describes Károly Pap, the irst professor of literature at the University of Debrecen and a main representative of the positivist literature research, as a teacher based on the reminiscences of his former students. Among the literature researchers after 1948, he was considered – rather undeservedly – a negativ igure in the history of the University. Most of the people remembered him as cold and distant teacher with aristocratic behaviour. he essay demonstrates the professional taste of the wrongfully underestimated professor in literature, and draws a iner picture about the conlicting personality of Károly Pap.

    MY GRANDFATHER, PROFESSZOR TIVADAR HÜTTL. he commemoration speech was told by the grandson of Tivadar Hüttl, Tivada Hüttl Junior in 2013 at the unveiling of the professor’s sculpture in the sculpture park in the Medical Central at the Debrecen University. His son and grandson, bearing the same name, have become doctors and the love for this profession gave them strength. Hardly any heirloom or family stories remained for the descendants.

From the end of the 1950s he was an associate at the Institute of Mathematics of the Hungarian Academy of Science, and during this period, against his political background, he had a compelling scientiic career. he chronology reviews his most important works, his lectures
    abroad and his role in the international scientiic circles.
